I am surprised that no one started this yet, so close to game day. I see us winning fairly comfortably at home against Georgia Southern, regardless of their improvement. It won't be enough to overcome our own improvement, but I look forward to the Eagles fan from last year coming on here and trying to prove us wrong, since they are so much better than us :).

I'm not sure how reliable they could be this early in the season, but the Vegas lines seem to have Valpo favored by 12 points, which matches my pick:
Valpo 78
Georgia Southern 66
These guys are no pushover. They were 15-15 last year and I read somewhere that one of their guys was included in the Mid-major guys you've never heard of, or some such report. They aren't real big (6'7") and only two seniors. The Southern Coference website didn't seem to have any poll information on projected finish.
I think it will be a good game against a small athletic team. Probably a good chance to continue to set the lineup and get some additional kinks worked out. Valpo by 12 seems about right.
I believe that GSU will put a strong fight early, taking a lead or two in the first half, but a deep Valpo bench will outlast them in the second. They'll hit a couple of three's at the end to make it seem closer.

Nice to move on from football at last.
I think that a very experienced team at home takes charge at the start and wins going away. 86 to 65.
I wonder if Valpo's average roster age is among the top ten in the country? Nearly all are seniors or transfer soph/juniors.

Thanks haze for finding that. I think its a little deceptive. First, the two teams picked ahead of them are Davidson and College of Charleston, two typically very good mid-major squads. The ten all conference team members include 5 from these two schools. One, however, is from Georgia Southern. With the names ahead of them I think its more akin to being picked third in the Horizon. When you see whose ahead of the third place team you realize that they can still be very good.

I agree, Valpo should come away with the win...
But Georgia Southern has a potential second-round NBA draft pick in Eric Ferguson, this kid is legit. His YouTube videos are quite impressive and he is starting to get a lot of attention for this year's draft.... Even Coach Drew had mentioned him as a likely NBA prospect
We, Georgia Southern, are the darkhorse team for the SoCon...at least thats what has been written. That said, those who wrote it probably figured we would have Jelani Hewitt the entire season. He's academically ineligible for the fall semester of games. Hes one of our best defenders and hes our best three point shooter. Jelani can light it up from deep when hes hot. Losing him hurts us badly in these early games.
However, the transfer of MEAC POTY C.J. Reed should help lessen the scoring blow of losing Hewitt. Reed was a scoring machine at Bethune Cookman. That said as well, we have no idea how he will fit into our team. We also signed a pair of 6'5 athletic freshman guards who were both Rivals.com 3 star guys who everyone is excited about. They could help in filling the role of Hewitt as well. We also have a JUCO transfer in Brian Holmes who is expected to play some point guard and he could be a steadying presence off the bench with his experience and all around game ability. Jesse Pernell had a great freshman year and hes a great defensive player. Very bring future for the kid. Tre Bussey is our 6th man so to speak and he will probably be thrust into a starting role with Hewitt out.
The front court is all about Eric Ferguson. Hes generally the most talented and athletic player on the court against any team we play. He has a tendency to get into foul trouble but when you get him on the court for 25 plus minutes, hes a force to deal with in the paint. Cam Baskerville is the lone senior and last year, he was a guy who would give you 6 to 10 points and a good number of rebounds...or he would turn it over repeatedly and struggle to contribute in any sort of positive way. He played better near the end of the season and we're hoping that he continues this into his senior year. A lot of fans, and I'm sure the coaches, are counting on Kam Dunnican to be our 5 man. Hes our tallest player (after we kicked our other 6'8 sophomore off the team over the summer) and he is more of a rebounder and shotblocker than a scorer but thats what we need with the way we run our offense.
That sounds like a bunch of rambling on from my perspective but we as Eagle fans have no idea what to expect. We will be pretty darn good once we get Hewitt back, but until then, we will just all be waiting and hoping that we can pull it together and get off to a good start.
If I had to guess, I'd probably say our starting 5 will look something like:
Reed
Bussey
Pernell/Holmes
Ferguson
Dunnican/Baskerville
If we win the game, it will be because we caused turnovers which we are good at, and didn't turn the basketball over....which was something that was an extreme stat as to whether we won or lost last year. If we lose, it will be because of turnovers and 4 new guys in the backcourt learning to play together. We have not played an exhibition game to my knowledge.
Thanks for the breakdown Chad. The only way Valpo loses is if Buggs gets into foul trouble and our other pg options turn it over. Valpo also will need to shoot poorly from outside for Georgia to have a chance.
Valpo 73
GS 62
Thats pretty easy to say. ;D I'm not expecting a win without Hewitt, but we are physically still one of the most talented mid major teams you'll play. If Reed and Ferguson are hot, you'll get all you want.
Chad,
Thanks for the recap--well done! Question: how do you think you are better than last year? Net gains, net losses? We know we are significantly better than last year and, we did win at your place last year.
I expect a very good game and hope you win your conference!
Last year, we got off to a bad start. Willie Powers returned from an ACL injury and missed junior season and it took him about ten games to get back into real gameshape. We also were a very young team. It took us a while to really get things sorted out and learn to win away from Hanner where we only lost twice all of last year. We were a pretty good team in mid major terms at the end of last season but still had the flaw of being too turnover prone.
This year, we as a fanbase expect to improve on the 15-15 mark. But without Jelani Hewitt who is our best returning guard, how much improvement we will see early on is hard to say. I honestly have no idea what to tell you guys. Reed is very good but how he fits in is yet to be seen. I can't even tell you where he will play but if I had to guess, I'd say point guard. If we had a backcourt of Reed and Hewitt from day 1, we'd be a dangerous team. I think it will take us a few games to get going, and we will start out a little slower than most of our fanbase would like...but by the time conference play rolls around and Hewitt hopefully returns, we will probably be a 16-20 win team. I expect us to beat the lower tier teams of the SoCon, something we struggled to do on the road last year, beat some of the better teams like UNCG and CofC, and win some of our non conference, early season games...and finish 2nd on our side of the conference behind Davidson.
If Reed acclimates quick, Ferguson really breaks out, and one of our freshman guards contributes in a big way early, we could have the best Eagle basketball team since 2006 which is a team that won the SoCon regular season title. Davidson is going to be a top 25 type team this year. I'm not sure we are good enough to challenge them just yet.

He needs to correct the last time we were in the NCAA tourney, as it was my last year of 2003-2004, not 2002.
Opening day is finally here! I'm all giddy with excitement and I really hope that the ladies' game goes a little long and the men's game gets a later start. My son has a game of his own from 7-8. So a late start would be greatly appreciated!
Go Valpo!

The body of the story says "2004" (and did this morning), but the sidebar says "2002". In either case, it's been a long time.
I'm not sure if the typo was in the body or in the Outlook box, but it's right in the story, but still says 2002 in the Outlook to the season.

Really? Wow! I had much higher expectations for Bryce's sweet 16 team. An Indiana Mr. Basketball and two 7 footers...Do you really think Bobby or Kevin could handle Zoran? Bryce was considerably better than anybody Valpo is going to put on the court, and could shoot it every bit as well as Ryan. The big difference? Bryce could get his own shot whenever he wanted. I highly doubt Ryan is going 16th overall in the NBA draft. This isn't a knock on this years team, but that team had a lot more parts to compete on a national level, vs competing against other above average mid majors.
I think this topic should have it's own thread? Anybody else agree?

I think Bobby and Kevin are a lot more athletic then the 7'ers. The Jenkins boys were the athletes but couldn't shoot like the current team. Nobody on the 98 team was a quick as Buggs except perhaps Jared Nuness. The diffence between Bryce and Ryan has more to do with Ryan's rebounding which wasn't Bryce's strength. The current team also has much more depth. The 98 team was deep but not this deep. And finally, this team will get up and down the court much faster and that would be a problem for the bigs from 98. The 98 team was a half court team and that's about it.
Is it wise to compare this team to the 98 team? This is like what Bears fans are doing right now in comparing this season's Bears defense to the 1985 Bears defense that helped win a Super Bowl. It gets tiresome to keep comparing the past with the current, especially when all we have of the current is two exhibition games that a very small sample size have really watched.
I give the 98 team an edge, mainly because of Zoran Viskovic. He's one of the most underrated players we've ever had. If he had not played poorly at the pre-draft camp he likely could have made an NBA roster. I talked to more than one NBA scout that loved his foot work, post moves and passing. Hope this year's team proves me wrong.

Exactly, doubling up with out Capo, what on paper should be a decent team, was in my mind very unexpected.
Very impressive.
To my memory this was as dominating and complete game I've seen in a long long time. This was not Chicago State but rather a team that will compete against the likes of Davidson and College of Charleston. They won't hurt our rpi.
Now, as for the new guys who haven't played in a long time and haven't shown anything at the D1 level...You know who you are! ;)
Great game for everyone! I can't wait for the day when Vashil can catch a pass in traffic. So many positives. Get well soon Capo.
Also have to give credit to Bryce's preparation, as anytime their projected 2nd round NBA guy touched the ball, he was immediately swarmed. It looked like he had never been double-teamed before and caused 7 TOs on him alone. How many coaches can call on their 9th man to give them 9 point in his first 2 minutes after not playing until the end as well? lol

As much as his offensive skills have been derided on this board in the past, I'd like to highlight how Buggs has been contributing. Although his three-point attempt was nothing to write home about, his ability to take the defender off the dribble and ability to finish if he doesn't draw enough attention in the lane, has worked well at opening outside shots. And isn't it nice when those outside shots find the bottom of the bucket.
Hey all-
Im pretty mum on these boards, often lurking but during the season Ill pop in from time to time. Wow- after checking the roster, I didnt realize that many D-1 transfers were already here, waiting for the mandatory ineligibility to run its course. I have pretty high expectations for this team, as Im sure most of you do as well. Should be a fun ride. I hope everyone is well.

In addition to sample size- you could see the steps Bryce's team had taken heading into that season. The previous tourney experience alone, one could tell if they made the tourney again in 98 they were on the brink of advancing out of the first round.
A quick side note with the Bears, imo what makes any comparison apples for oranges with the '85 to '12 defense is today's emphasis on player safety. It precludes the style of play that was permissible back in those days- and that aggressive style went a long way towards defining that defense.

No need to constantly wet blanket everything.
That said, I think there are viable comparisons to be made between the 85 Bears and today's Bears....just for fun. There is no wisdom or lack of wisdom in doing it, just something fun to talk about. That D-Line was a bit better than this one, linebackers are even and this secondary is a bit better. Two GREAT defenses.
The comparison of the two Valpo teams is crazy though...completely different animals. 98 team had the best player and was bigger, but I think this team is much more athletic and deep. Honestly, I think this year's team would match up real well with the 98 team. It would be a good game and I'd take the '12-'13 bunch. Doesn't mean they are better, but I like the matchups.

You're reading it incorrectly. I'm saying, if the 98 team suited up tomorrow to face this year's team, it would be a blowout. That's why I put the smiley face in there, so you would get it.
Tony V, if he was found, probably couldn't get up and down the court more than twice without needing oxygen. I'm pretty sure a few other guys could stand to lose a few pounds. Bryce admitted in a Post-Tribune article that he does not play with the guys. Of course, they couldn't leave him open, but still. Blowout.
In their primes? I'd say it would be close. Yes, I loved Zoran but I think he could be neutralized by Kevin because he would have to guard him, if Bobby was out. :)
Buggs could handle Jamie. Ryan is better than anyone on the 98 team except Bryce. Could Bill and Bob get out to defend all of the perimeter shooters this team has (Coleman, Boggs, Bogan, Rossi)?
It's an interesting discussion for sure. I was just being a smart-ass before, of course.
Having just finished watching the South Dakota State-Alabama game with Nate Wolters practically willing his team to victory and Kara Lawson talking about all the NBA scouts and whether he could play at that level, I found myself wondering how Nate compares to Bryce when he was a senior in 98. I just bought a ticket to the SLU game that includes dinner with Bryce the night before. Should I ask him that question?
hey StlVUfan: We are also going to the St.L game but what's the deal with dinner with Coach the night before? I just ordered seats from the St. L venue...were your tickets through VU?

Here are some of the photos I took at the game. As you can see, the student turnout was pretty good, and I am hoping that will continue to even grow more as the season progresses, especially if the team wins as many games as it should.

On the spectrum of less than expected to about expected to better than expected of starts for my Eagles...this one can go in the less than expected category. I didn't get to see any of it but I don't need to with a score like that. We didn't have any sort of chemistry from what I'm told and we got off to our patented slow start on the road....something we got out of last year near the end of the season and I had hoped that would carry over.
Its going to take us a few games to get our act together in the backcourt. I don't expect us to beat Charlotte on Tuesday but we get into a few easier games after that which we should be able to find success and build some chemistry. Hopefully we will get Jelani Hewitt back and we can achieve the 20 win season I think a lot of Eagle fans are expecting.

We all hope you win 20 and your conference and go to the NCAAs! It'll sure help our RPI!! ;) Good luck the rest of the way!

You interested in doing any local HS games? With quality like that, you might be able to sell some photos (including to me). If so, let me know.

Thanks very much, lowposter, I'm appreciative of your compliment on my photos, but my schedule is such that I'd probably be unable to attend the high school games. I am usually not even able to make more than half the VU games. I wish I could. Also, photography is just a fun hobby for me. I have had a number of folks offer to pay me for prints, and I do have a standing account with a commercial site in case I ever decide to sell prints, but until now I have always just given out the photos to those who ask. Thanks, again.
Too bad Valpopal. Your photos are stunning and I think the parents would have gladly purchased prints...I know I would have.
Let me know if your schedule allows it down the road.
