Title: Baseball v. Chicago State
Post by: jetz on May 07, 2013, 04:16:41 PM
GT is down again, so I'll post here.  Again, I'm receiving updates from a secret follower at the field.  Right now, it's the top of the fifth, and Valpo leads 4-1.  Wormington started for Valpo, and will get the win.  He went four innings.  Drew Hasler is in now and has a K looking and a groundout to start the fifth.  Two down.

Hasler gets a groundout to short for a 1-2-3 inning.  Mid 5, Valpo leads 4-1.

Karch is the DH today and he flies to right.  One down in the bottom of 5.

Manning lines to center for out #2.  Chi St. is on their third pitcher of the game.

Mahoney with his second hit of the game (he's hot) with a single to right.

Valpo looking to extend their nationwide D1 leading win streak.  They share the current streak with three other teams at nine.  Bynum grounds into a fielder's choice to short to end the fifth.  Headed to the sixth, Valpo leads 4-1.  Trevor Haas makes his way to the mound to hurl for the Crusaders.

Haas is a true freshman, about 6 feet tall, a slender build, and a big hit with the girls.  He's yet to accomplish his first full blown razor shave.  Ground ball to Bynum takes a bad hop and is ruled an error (wth?).  Runner on 1st.  Bynum is playing first base for the first time this year.

Ground ball to Mahoney is bobbled.  The Cougars had a hit and run on.  Everybody's safe and another error is charged.   :banghead: :censored:

Mahoney redeems himself.  Grounder up the middle.  Mahoney fields and tags the runner coming from first.  Runner from second tries to score.  Spence fires to Hanson at home, who blocks the plate and makes the tag.  Double play.  Batter stays at first.

Sounds like we are well on the way to our 10th straight win, to get us above 0.500.  Good heart by the guys to not just give up this season when things weren't going our way in 1 run losses.

Trevor is struggling a bit.  Here's a double that leaves runners on 2nd and 3rd.  Now a passed ball scores the guy from 3rd.  4-2 Valpo.

Btw jetz, do the guys care that Oakland is joining?  Other than the obvious that it will keep the NCAA bid, do they care about playing in Detroit again?

Mahoney accounts for all three outs as he fields a routine ground ball and makes the play.  4-2 Valpo mid 6.

Tx, did they make an announcement?  We need somebody I guess...Freshman Jake Hanson, catching today, starts the Valpo half of the 6th with a solid single to right.

Andy Burns is at the hot corner for the Crusaders today.  He pops up a sac bunt attempt for one out.

Bain is playing left today.  He flies out to center for two away.  He's also the leadoff hitter.

We've been bringing up the middle of the order with two outs a lot in this game it seems to me.  Here's Hara.  The Cali transfer strikes out looking, and we're headed to the 7th with Valpo up 4-2.  I DO NOT feel comfortable!

Senior Connor Buxton is on for his fifth appearance of the year on the hill.

Here's a slow roller towards short.  Burns, always solid at third, cuts it off and makes a nice play to throw him out.  Two down.

Buxton coaxes a fly to center that Hara puts away.  Nice 1-2-3 inning for Connor.  Great job!

Vavra is batting third today.  He's in the top 250 in the country in batting average.  Now he takes one off the elbow and heads to first...

Vavra steals second easily.  This is something I'd love to see more of from our offense. I smell big inning..

Karch is the cleanup hitter.  He has been powdering the ball all day, but has just one double to show for it.  Now he skies a fly ball to left that stays in the yard.  One away.

Manning up next.  He bunts for a base hit, and Valpo has runners on the corner.

I imagine that they are still in the works, if they ever were.  Northern Kentucky has a board of trustees meeting tomorrow at 1 pm as well, but it hasn't been announced about what as of yet.  They would make sense in our blueprint as well, and with great facilities.

Make plans to come out to Emory G. on May 18th.  It will be Senior Day and our last home game of 2013.  Afterwards, stay and enjoy a world class buffet dinner with the team.  You're welcome.

Manning takes a suicide lead, and the Cougar pitcher throws over to keep him close.  Now Manning out again, and he swipes second easily.  Let's keep running!

Mahoney grounds to 2nd, and that'll score Vavra.  Now 5-2 Valpo.  Two away.

Bynum is up.  He swings and misses at strike three.  We're headed to the 8th, and Mike Jacobs trots to the mound...

Kyle Schneider comes off the bench to go to left.  Bain moves to first, and Bynum is done for the day.

I'm just ok with the Oakland thing.  I personally prefer the Valpo move to the MVC.  I guess that's over now though.  Just haven't heard anything lately.

Jacobs is struggling with command.  Mike's been around the plate all year, so this is unusual.  The Valpo captain and senior gives up a single to right, and the Valpo bullpen is active.

Valpo would have been great in the MVC, especially for my baseball interests (DBU is an affiliate starting next season).  However, our facilities will keep us from getting any invite in the next 10 years.  The MVC is waiting to make sure that SLU and Dayton get invited to the new Big East, before adding any teams past their current 10 with Loyola.

Mike gets a strikeout looking.  One away.  Nice.

Tx, I think you're right on with that assessment.  Glad to hear we're still possibly in the mix.  Jacobs had a HBP before the single that I missed.  Now he's settled in, and gets a flyout to right.  Runners on 1st and 2nd with two away.

Vavra ranges left to field a hard ground ball.  Tough play, but he makes it, and Jacobs is out of the inning.  Mike looked good after a rocky start.  To the bottom of 8, Valpo leads 5-2.

Cougars bring in pitcher #4 (I think) for the game to chuck in the 8th.  Chuck?  Hurl?  Why does pitching sound like a disease?

Some other national stats:  we are 8th in the nation in walks allowed per nine innings.  Andy Burns is tied for 60th in the nation with four triples.  We're in the top 50 in the country in ERA.

Do you know where we are in SH?  We seem to have a ton again.  In regards to pitching, most pitchers are usually a little 'off,' so it makes sense that it sounds like a disease  ;)

Valpo goes 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 8th.  Hanson grounds out, Burns grounds to first, and Bain flies to center.  Ryan Kennedy in to pitch the 9th for Valpo.

Now a hard ground ball to short.  Spence handles and tosses to Vavra at 2nd.  That's it and that's all...Valpo wins 5-2.  10 hits and 4 errors for the Crusaders, Chi St. had 7 hits and no errors.  We'll take the sloppy win and head to Chicago.  Need to win the series there and we'll go with rested pitchers.  BTW, today was the last day of classes headed to finals for Valpo students.  I'm sure there will be lots off of their minds come the weekend.  Thanks for following!

Good job to get to 24-23.  I would love a sweep at UIC, heading into the last series with YSU.  Make it happen  :)

Your Valparaiso Crusaders now own the nation's longest current winning streak in Division 1 all alone.  Ten wins in a row.  We'll be all by ourselves until at least Friday, when everyone starts playing again.  Great accomplishment!
