Title: Trouble ahead for privates?

Two proposals would make college free nationwide

This is what doesn't make sense to me:

Redeeming America's Promise proposes redirecting existing federal and state financial aid and tuition tax breaks to give full tuition scholarships in specified amounts. It says the amount of money the government already spends for those purposes is enough to provide $2,500 per academic year for community college and $8,500 for four-year universities to every student from a family earning $180,000 a year or less.

That would just about cover the entire average advertised full cost of public college and university tuitions for everyone, the organization says.

Not sure what schools they are thinking of but going to a public school like Wisconsin or Texas costs a lot more than that.  The reality is that when you look at a public schools costs and then compare it to Valpo's, less scholarship money etc., that the net difference isn't all that much.

What this sounds like is the typical government bailout program, well meaning, but doomed to add billions to our already out of control debt.  Can you see a state like Illinois trying this?

They should make food free while they're at it. And cable TV! That would be nice.

I think the only thing that will truly save Illinois is for more than the usual rate of people on state pensions to die off. Why do you think Bruce Rauner, running for governor against incumbent Gov Quinn, runs nursing homes?

Never going to happen.  Obamacare was one thing, but this is a much more difficult mountain to climb.  Try convincing people that just because they aren't lower or middle income, that they should be paying for other kid's college education.

I thought it was a spam post about the need for Viagra.

I thought it was a post about the National League Central divisional race.

But then I've been known to misread things before.

I was expecting old clips from America's Funniest Home Videos.

I received the Honor Roll of Donors booklet today, and let's give it up to the class of 2004 for coming in 6th in regards to giving this last year, despite only being out of college for 10 years (1954, 1952, 1951, 1953, 2001, then 2004):).

Regarding this topic:

1.  Obama was proposing 2 free years of community college for I believe high school graduates. This will certainly not pass Congress. If it did, schools like Valpo would get hammered.

2.  Thank God Obama's proposal on taxing interest on 529 college plan savings plans got canned.  If that passed, that would truly destroy small colleges.
