Let's see if the Ball State wake up call was received. The alarm was pretty loud, so it should have.
So far... Belmont... has only played 1 home game...Like many non-BCS conference men's basketball programs, Belmont will spend a fair amount of
November and December away from home. While this year Belmont will play 11 of 15 non-conference games away from home
The Bruins return 11 letterwinners from a team that represented the Ohio Valley Conference in the 2015 NCAA Tournament
They have 7 total blocks for the season
Beat Marquette 83-80
Bradds scores career-high tying 24 points and draws charge on Henry Ellenson with 14 seconds left, while Luke secures game from the line
Lost to Arizona State 83-74
Luke tallies 17-8-5-3 and Bruins force 22 turnovers, but Belmont fights through 8-for-31 three-point shooting, while ASU goes 10-for-21.
Beat Western Kentucky 90-85
Bradds tallies 16 & 9, Egekeze adds 15, and Luke provides 9 & 11 assists, while Josh Lester sparks 22-6 Bruin run to close the first half.
Lost to Evansville 93-88
Bradds has career day of 28-14-4 on 13-for-13 shooting and Egekeze adds 19,
Beat South Alabama 98-85

Beat Kennesaw State 80-55
Egekeze, Bradshaw and Bradds score 17 points each as Bruins make 13 three-pointers and hold Kennesaw State to 33 percent shooting.

I have to miss to coach my 8th graders vs. mighty River Forest. Hoping to catch then end on the radio on the drive home.
I noticed that Plymouth's Mack Mercer had 16 points in 20 minutes at BYU. His first appearance of the season due to a foot injury. Assume a few Plymouth folks will make the short drive over for the game on Thursday.

Yes, US 30 between Valpo and Plymouth will be a Rockie Road Thursday night/Friday morning. Hope nobody hits a boulder in Wanatah.

I think that the team will be making a statement after the loss at Ball State.

Yes I know that we should be broadcasting our behinds into every available seat in the ARC. I think I saw on the Belmont site that they could view it on ESPN 3.
I had temporarily forgotten about Belmont's last 2 victories over us. Two years ago they beat us by grabbing Mercer and last year they snatched Adelsperger right out of our hands. I think a US 30 roadblock should be constructed Thursday night for all Valpo bound vehicles bearing either Marshall (Plymouth) or Miami (Peru) county plates.

I think we should treat these players and their families with all the respect that we showed when we were recruiting them, maybe more so. You never know when a quality kid wants to be closer to home.

Wait! I forgot Jeff Laidig from Penn HS. I do not remember us recruiting him but maybe we should include St Joe and Elkhart county plates in that US 30 roadblock. So does Belmont have any players on the roster who are not from northern Indiana?

16 of 31 from 3point range and 23 assists
I think Valpo matches up pretty well against Belmont - they run and shoot a ton of threes, but Valpo is pretty good at guarding the perimeter. Last year opponents shot 33% from 3pt vs Valpo, and only are shooting 30% this year. The most similar opponent might be Iona, who shot 6-22 (26%) vs Valpo... in their other 3 games, Iona was 11-36, 16-34, and 19-40 - so 33 3PA per game. Belmont averages 30 3PA per game and has shot 30 or more 3pa in 6 of their 8 games. Last year Belmont shot the 5th most 3pa in the country at 866 (Iona was 4th at 869... and as an aside, VMI shot 1078 threes).
You'll probably see Valpo either shoot a bunch of threes or a bunch of free throws playing more up-tempo to combat a smaller lineup. My gut says Peters eats up Belmont inside and scores 25, with half his points coming at the line.

They've got a total of five Indiana kids (compared to two for Valpo). Not sure what the connection might be, but Belmont sure does recruit Indiana heavily.

Any news on Walker tonight? Seems likely out to me. Could really use him guarding either Bradshaw or Barnette. They might be the best shooting backcourt in the nation. 164-409 (40%) last year, 43-96 (44%) this year from 3. Yikes.
Quote from: Jordan on December 03, 2015, 02:39:11 PMAny news on Walker tonight?
I've not listened to the coach'' show (yet), but Oren's piece (yesterday?), quoting or paraphrasing Bryce, made it sound like it could be a while. Maybe a chance we could see him tonight, but also a significant chance he could be out for a week or two.

One eventually begins to think about neighboring communities, even neighboring counties...
I've heard they have reasonable BBQ, even had a taste (not enough to evaluate). I've also heard rumors it's coming to Valparaiso (on a more-permanent basis than setting up temporary shop in Ironwood).
And that's not even the first thing I heard about Wanatah! I had a friend, parents of son's classmate, who had some kind of medical practice there. I think I saw a goat there one while bicycling, and had fond thoughts of the possibility of quality cheese.
Looks like another mediocre turnout - my guess is 3000-3500 by game time.
#no3'svalpo
VU media has touched on this so far this game, but it's been true all season -- for a team that isn't outstanding at 3 point shooting, we shoot wayyy too many of them.
I hate espn3. Really miss the HL network.
Well, we are fortunate we are up against Belmont....because we would be down big against many other teams tonight. Not at all impressed by these teams tonight. Neither is playing like a top mid-major.
With no Tevonn and with Darien's shot not having arrived yet this year, teams will continue to pack it in a tight zone and dare us to shoot them out of it. We are missing a lot of moving parts right now.
Bad 4th foul call on Hammick. Belmont in Bonus with 12 minutes to go.
haha, I don't think that was a charge, but we will take it. huge.
Belmont was a good team. The two guards were impressive. They would be our rival if they joined the HL.
A win by any other name is a win. Held the BU O to under 30 of their average (I [heart] Defense ). But this wasn't easy.
Never going to take a win for granted after last week! This team is in a big offensive funk especially without T. Walker so a big defensive "rock tossing" game win. Valpo's style won out over Belmont's...keeping them under 60 is impressive. Love David Skara, LOVE DAVID SKARA! Really hoping for a healthy Valpo soon. Another quality W.
Enough bricks laid tonight to build the Great Wall. Still, take the win and hope the team somehow can remember how to hit a three and finish at the rim. And hope T. Walker makes it back real soon.
A hard played win, no Breaks, in the end we made our own breaks that's good ;)
That charge was questionable, but the foul called on the rebound after Belmont's last 1 and 1 was atrocious. Valpo shooting 0 FT in the first half was bizarre. Good adjustments getting to the line in the 2nd half.
Valpo only shot 35.4% tonight and 24.0% from 3, but still won, so I'll take it. They had a couple defensive lapses, but for the most part frustrated Belmont. They didn't give up too many open 3pt looks and forced Belmont to go inside. Belmond probably would have liked to take more than 25 3's in the game.
Good win against a tough opponent who will most likely win the OVC title. We shot terribly and were a man down but still pulled it off. At the end of the season this will be an important win. On to ISU with, I hope, Tevonn in tow...will certainly help.
To my untrained eye, we are still not running special plays to free up Alec for clean looks.
Todd made a big point of the switch to a zone that threw BU off. I think he was right.

Yeah, that's about right. In terms of energy, atmosphere, it wasn't a bad looking crowd. Alas, I only made two minutes in person myself.
But, the upper deck was significantly occupied. Not quite IPFW (Friday night), but a decent crowd for a school night. (School night indeed, saw more than a few kids, like ours, leaving at half time.)
But, it's clear, NW Indiana let alone Chicago has not yet noticed the Crusaders. That top 25 ranking would have helped. I suppose the end of the NFL season might too.

I was pretty annoyed that it kept skipping frames when the action got moving. Really seemed like a compression issue - it couldn't handle rapid changes in-frame. Not sure if it was my computer, my feed, or the broadcast.
And, I didn't love that it was 15-30 seconds behind the radio, maybe a minute behind twitter.
It's always _so slow_ to start, too.

Carter? I don't know what he was doing on the offense possession before it.
And, I don't know if he was 100% set. The replay might show him moving. But, momentum wise, narrative arc wise, he was _definitely_ set. Guy barreled into him. Technical details or not, it certainly _felt_ like a charge.
Gotta use that narrative energy and get the refs on our side. Was pleased to hear one faculty daughter, first grade classmate of my girl, supporting that sentiment at the game!

I really wonder if we could get them for a home-and-away every season, apart from the HL deal. Luke Gore sounded very knowing, very sympathetic, that they have just as much trouble scheduling as we do. Sounds like they had already been talking with the coaching staff, Luke mentioned one assistant by name, about scheduling troubles. Not sure if they've specifically talked about a regular deal. But, it sounds pretty sweet to me.

The foul on Hammink boxing out the shooter? Was unusual, for sure. Or wait, was it E Vic?
I didn't see the play, but my son claimed that Vashil "shot a free throw without shooting a free throw" in the first half. Some kind of a dish from Carter to Vashil at about the free throw line, and Vashil made it? Only two points of the game? Someone mentioned a jump shot, but I'm not sure that's in the repertoire! Of course, I wouldn't have said a shot from the FT line was, either.

And some of those were _horrible_ threes that settled for. Deep, ugly stuff.
We took a few of those ourselves, but Belmont took some that I didn't mind giving up, whatsoever. (And hit one or two of them.)
A few questionable decisions maybe, or ideas that didn't quite work. But, I'm enjoying getting to see more of E Vic. I love his willingness to step in whenever necessary, in all kinds of situations.
I'll admit to a certain degree of freakish glee with the kind of line-ups he can contribute to as well, like E Vic at the point, Hammink at SG, etc. Sort of like cheering when the SS shifts east of second base.
Don't get me wrong, I want Tevonn back and healthy. But we have a really deep team. (Remember Lexus?)

Was the WVUR stream working, at least? What I tried of it in the first half seemed OK. Maybe it's usually solid for home games, and only has trouble when we're on the road?

We totally shut down Belmont's high scoring offense tonight. They scored 17 points below their LOWEST scoring game of the year. We completely shut down their fast break opportunities, took away almost all of their back door opportunities) a regular staple of Belmont's game for years), forced then to play deep into the shot clock, and contested almost every 3. We give up the 7th fewest PPG in the nation (57), which is exactly what we gave up tonight. I don't know how it looks on the internet, but it's amazing to see in person. When we get Tevonn back, David back at full speed, and Darien finds his shot ( which he will) we will be dominant. Belmont missed a golden opportunity to steal a win tonight. They're going to be facing a much better Crusader team in Nashville.

Did I mention I [heart] Defense?
The overall game looked to me (a non-BB addict) sloppy as hell. There was no smoothness to the game. But that, IMO, is because our defense thew the game into that mode. And that mode made it hell for Belmont. Only wish our O-game could be smoother, but when you create chaos it happens at both ends of the court, I guess.

My wife thought the jumper might be seriously hurt. I wondered if he might mostly have injured his pride. But, no help from the pass, certainly.

"All the way through" a 2 minute 14 second video? How sacrificial of you! lol
Without the explanation, I didn't make it through. Thought, "Valpo does it too, but would it kill teams to hale highlights from both teams, give it some narrative flow, more of a game summary?" And stopped halfway through.

Yeah, I don't really want to watch 2 minutes of Belmont making deep desperation 3s.

Really? I was being facetious about going the whole length of the 2:14 video with wh. Doesn't wh deserve some latitude of at least 2:14?

Does anyone remember the call on this play? They gave Valpo the ball but I didn't really see anything wrong on Belmont's part and the other ref who made the call was off the screen.
Was it shot clock violation?

I don't remember, but good call. Seems likely. Clock seems to be at 00, and Alec likes the call.

It was an offensive foul on Belmont. Seriously.
