GCU will get better as the season progresses. Right now they are blending a bunch of new faces...a couple of freshmen, redshirts and a grad transfer.

From a metrics standpoint, it is REALLY important for us to win the 1st game.   Assuming Cincy is the top dog and wins the tournament, which may not come true, but let's say they take care of business, and also assume Nevada is better than us, and Illinois State is the best loser from the bottom half of the bracket.

GCU(W)/Nevada(L)/WKU(?) is better for US and the MVC than GCU(L)/Fordham(W)/Illinois State(? -- Either way bad for MVC)

We have to win and we need to take advantage of this opportunity. We are a young team and if we can play Nevada and/or Cincy, it will help us not only this year, but will give us a starting point of where we need to get to for the next few years too. Without getting to postseason play, and with the lackluster out of conference games, chances to see how we stack up are few and far between.

I love Sackey and JFL playing together and they'll get it done vs Grand Canyon.

We can thank our lucky stars we're playing in Paradise Jam this year, and not last. St. Thomas  is a difficult place to "manufacture" energy. Everything is alluringly relaxing and slow paced, as it should be in a tropical island paradise.

Dedicated to heaven on earth and wishing I was there:

The only real allure is the level of competition.  The gym is small with a seating capacity similar to a small high school. While it is tropical and hanging around a pool or on a beach will be welcomed by the players, unless they are true tourists, the guys will be kind of bored. That, actually, might not be a bad thing.

No doubt we will go down there with a "take care of business" mindset. It's certain self focused individuals from last year's group who seemed to have difficulty keeping their biological clock revved from 1 game to the next, or even 1 half to the next. For people like that, lounging around on an ocean beach between games would be a recipe for disaster - which I guess was my point.

The midwest has been pretty cold lately so my guess is the warm weather in and of itself will be worth it, even if they don't get to do much other than sit outside

Goals for this trip (in addition to 2 WS)

1. Make Free Throws at a 75% clip
2. Reduce the unforced turnovers. Too many throwing the ball away and dribbling into tdouble triple teams on breaks. Protect the Basketball
3. Eliminate the scoring droughts, particularly when JFL is out of the game. Krikke assisted with another scoring option, and that has to continue. Robinson and Gordon need to contribute veteran leadership when the ball and people aren't moving.

Not sure where the $30 per month is coming from, it clearly states that one month is $12.50.  I don't think that is horrible for a minimum of 3 games and potentially up to 6 games if you also watch the other MVC team Illinois State.

I've been pleasantly surprised thus far this season by the product on the court. Trying not to get too excited as I've done so in the past only to be disappointed down the stretch. I really like the tempo. Lottich a little more fiery. Freeman staying is huge and the team seems to rally behind him. Losing our two 7'ers allows for a better pace. Krikke been decent. Excited to see clay in time develop but will take a little while. Sackey playing well.

Hey, that's my catamaran in that clip!

Seriously, I did own a catamaran down there many years ago, but that one wasn't it. And seriously, what Valpo enrollee gets to have 4 - 5 years of a free, great education and travel to exotic places like Charlotte Amalie, USVI, all on the university's nickel?  I just fervently hope that these kids realize how blessed they are and respond in kind.

I think Krikke is a great add.  He seems to play a little bigger than he is and he has good floor instincts and first step.   What a change.

Like I've said I don't know how many wins we will get, but I will be proud of this team's effort and will enjoy JFL's top-drawer skills.

Sharp money has it down to a PK in spots now.

I think we have a good shot at winning this one. GC is one of the worst rebounding teams in the country (their only player above 6'7" has their worst rebounding percentage) and doesn't defend the rim. Their offense is pretty solid, but that's mostly because they take care of the ball. If we are able to force some live ball turnovers and get out in transition, we may take this one by double digits.

I clicked through to create an account, and it's $30/month if you pay month-to-month, and $13/month if you pay for the full year up front. So the best deal is $30 for this tournament.

Looks like you can listen to the WVUR broadcast for free, though  ;D

Listening to the WVUR feed for free here.  It sounded like our fight song was playing.  I can't think our band went down there, right?  Todd & Brandon just said that GCU's band is there, wonder if they played our fight song as a courtesy.  I've seen that before, believe it or not.

Frustrating last few seconds.  GCU really has hit a lot very difficult shots.  It's been quite a battle thus far!  Annoying that GCU has even managed to create a home court advantage all the way in the Virgin Islands!    Krikke out due to "illness."

With the way we turned them over you would think we would have a 6-8 point lead, but it is tied due to a combination of our poor shooting, no 2nd chance points, and their hot shooting (especially early).

That was a very impressive win over a tough, inspiring, sometimes foggy Grand Canyon. We didn't luck into anything! Some would say that was a wide gap in our play that we just got over. We didn't leave anything hanging on the rim. We had an opening for a win and we saw it and followed through. We played like a river and over time forged our way through a great chasm of disappointment and succeeded.

No quid pro quo.

I couldn't listen or watch the game.  Looking at box score, Mileek fouled out?  In 11 minutes?  Is that right?

Hey, love to come out on top in this one!  A wild game, defense and FTs down the stretch were big.  Pretty good for playing Clay and Kiser at the 5 for a good portion of the game.  Vintage McMillan unfortunately.  I thought Emil's minutes were fine.

A gem only seen on video was the section of young Valpo fans under the camera making fun of the GCU students' acrobatics that go along with their standard cheer by mimicking with the motions to the YMCA dance.  Brilliant!

Lets face it, several fans on this board would complain about a 26 to 6 free throw disparity as well.  Sometimes that means something and sometimes it doesn't  Anybody see the feed to see if there is anything to it?  Hard to tell on the radio.  I do know we have some good shot fakers like Robinson who are really good at drawing contact.

It would be the same as Matt saying, "That was a little too close for comfort. Then again, it's tough when the other team is at full strength and you're without you're 2nd best player and your back-up center. Not to take anything away from Grand Canyon, of course."

Sometimes your opponent is just better than you are:

Illinois State blows a 10 point lead... Cincy wins it 66-65 despite going 1-16 from 3 point.

Sorolla did not play for the bearcats.

The Jam Bracket folks don't have to worry about a VU - ISU matchup...

Anyone else a little nervous that our players getting the most minutes at the 5 combined for 2 rebounds today?  For those that watched the game (I listened) what can you share with us regarding performance in the PF/C positions in the game?

Strange game without really having a 5 often with Mileek in foul trouble.  Seemed like defense and rebounding by committee.  Their 5 also had outside range that frequently brought our big out from under the basket.  Overall the hustle was there and doesn't leave me feeling overly concerned.

I noticed the disparity, but it felt like style of play was a factor.  They took a lot of jump shots and fadeaways while Valpo was running and turning them over putting GCU in spots to foul.  Also felt like GCU either scored or turned the ball over pretty much every time.

Thanks for sharing, listening to the call it was hard to determine if they were jumpers or floaters in the paint with our bigs getting backed down.

After watching these YouTube highlights it looks like jumpers outside the paint + layups from over help and 3's.

Watching those highlights, having not seen the game.

No wonder there was a free throw disparity.   Watch our guys on defense...  We maintain verticality at all times even when we jump in the are.  Hands both straight up and we NEVER reach forward in the entire highlight clip.   This has NOT been the case the last few years!

A very good WKU team (picked to win Conference USA) led BGSU 74-67 with 5:02 remaining, then scored only 1 point the rest of the way to lose 76-75.

What PF/C guys? Mileek was out most of the game and Fazekas and Krikke didn't play. Freese-Vilien is a statue and Kiser isn't exactly Mr. Hops. Yet Valpo was only outrebounded by 3.

All four points or less. The Valley is SO CLOSE to having just a banner year it's so frustrating.

If I was an unbiased viewer, I wouldn't complain about the foul disparity in this one.  I agree that GCU took a lot of jump shots, and our guys stayed vertical in defending.  We've had games in the past where we gave up an extra 20 FTs versus what we took, and it was because we lived on the perimeter and took jump shots.  It happens.  You could see Majerle giving it to the refs as soon as the game ended.  He was a passionate player, so it doesn't surprise me at how frustrated he is, just a few minutes after the game completed.

I'm suggesting anyone guarding the 4 or 5 is "considered" a PF/C on defense.  Your point is taken, but I was inquiring (of the available players) why we were underperforming on the boards.  Sounds like it was just the way the game played (jump shots and 3's which are more commonly long rebounds when missed) combined with their PF/C stretching the floor.

Kiser was quiet with Rebounds and Clay only had 4.  That means our players with any size on the inside had something like 5 or 6 reb.  That's alarming to me.

Agreed it is frustrating to see for as you mentioned the Valley is so close.  Evansville takes down #1 Kentucky only to loose a close one to SMU and then belly up against East Carolina.  No one really impressive left on their non con schedule.

Some hope still left:
UNI: West Virginia and #23Colorado (Wichita St. or South Carolina)
Bradley: #16Memphis (Kansas St. or Pitt)
Drake: Dayton
Valpo: Arkansas (possibly Cincy)
Loyola: possibly George Mason
Ill.St.: TCU
Most.: LSU, #21VCU
SIU: Saint Louis, Missouri
Indiana St.:  - No hope.

I watched the game and most all the fouls called on both sides were fouls. There were also some non calls both sides got away with. You take away the desperation and intentional fouls in the last 4 minutes of the game, and the disparity isn't as great as it seems. Majerle was just trying to transfer blame to the refs for his teams' lose.

Yeah, this morning I ended up splurging and paying the $30 since listening to the radio call it sounded like a heck of a game.  I was paying attention to rebounding and fouls and cannot say that either were terrible.  GCU almost never dribble drove to the basket (pull ups and 3 pointers with some drive and dish).  In my view our team slashes a ton (Javon, Sackey, Clay, Gordon and Robinson all like to dribble drive for layups or floaters).  So while I get their coaches concern on paper, in reality it was not egregious.

Regarding rebounding it was simply a ton of movement by their front court which kept our defenders with size away from the rim and moving (unready to rebound).  In addition when we had ok position near the rim it was deep rebounds that went over their heads.  Glad to say that I thought we played solid defense once they stopped hitting banked 3 pointers and sloppy floaters off balance.  These guys are primed to have a strong year (maybe even 20 wins).

So it really wasn't the refs fault it was just a big hole in GCU's game!
