Title: Valpo Womens Basketball 2020-2021
Post by: VUGrad1314 on May 21, 2020, 08:04:43 PM
Apparently Valpo WBB will be playing Louisville in a neutral site game at Genesis Convention Center in Gary. Apparently this is so that one of their players can get a local game in front of family but it is still a very nice scheduling get for Valpo. I hope they are able to steal that win but it will be a very tall order against a team of Louisville's caliber.

I imagine the Hammond Civic Center isn't NCAA regs on the court. Would be a better venue. Old but well mantained. Genesis is a complete dump.

This is a great game to get. Not quite a home game but close. We should be on the look out for these possibilities.

Unfortunately though I think we will be good, we will get hammered here. The difference between elite and good in women's basketball is huge...

I don't blame her, as if you are ready to start your career, and the upcoming season is not a certain given the societal changes in the last few months, I wouldn't elect to commit to another year of school, either, unless I wanted to do a Master's degree right away.

That sucks. I wish her the best and respect her decision to do what's best for her future and career, but it seems like no matter the sport, the instant we start to make some headway and establish ourselves in the MVC, we get hit with a big dose of adversity that sets us back. I hope we're able to turn the corner and start contending on a yearly basis as a program soon.

Looks like something Greg Kampe would put together for Oakland!  :o  True or not I'm intending to watch more girl's basketball this season! Fantastic Valley competition!

I agree, after hearing some of the buzz about the super competitive and exciting games from last conference season, I watched the replays of some of the ladies games and was excited for last years conference tournament (that never happened). Planning on watching more games "live" on ESPN this year!

This schedule is filled with good names. Also other than Purdue they weren't very good last year meaning winnable games.

Great to see all the returning and recognizable names and faces.  Despite this familiarity the team little resembled the pretty well oiled machine that was developing last February. :'(  A 10 point loss was not what I was expecting. The whole team looked a bit hesitant and flatfooted with many of the TO's following poor spacing or attack decisions.

On the other hand I'm seeing coach Evans with enough talent for another competitive season in the Valley so I will be standing by!

They had some jitters to work out, with not having Stoller or Hales to do the inside work anymore, it's now Profitt, Ellenson, White, and Weinman that a lot of work to do to get the ball in the bucket.

Unfortunate loss, but a lot of potential to come, if we whittle down those 25 turnovers.

I don't remember seeing this on Nicole, but thought that I would share, since it better explains why she left.  SF Austin is very good at women's basketball, and I wish her well.  She hasn't played in their first 3 games.

Nicole was a Dorow recruit. How many injuries doing that era of Valpo Basketball were there that led to players ending their careers early or transferring? Was this a fault of the trainer then to not send her out for a second opinion, the head coach for not sending her for a second opinion, or what?

I do wish her the best. Sounds like it was the move she needed, since the coaching and training staff at that time didn't look out for her the way they should have.

Nice win against Purdue, but Shay needs to make those FTs with 0:30 left (1/4)!  It seemed like we were trying to give it away with 4 minutes left, getting down to 1 point after a 10 point lead just a minute before, with several 4 and 5 second possessions, but then Grace White seemed to step up again.  Even if they end up at the bottom of the Big Ten, similar to Illinois, that is a nice program win!  Congrats ladies!

Illinois shot only 1-16 against us from 3 and now Purdue has finished 0-15. How is that even possible? Is this a byproduct of the Covid Chaos?

Baseball beat Wisconsin as well as Purdue one year.

When I was a boy I went to the game against Purdue at Hilltop (1967? 1968?) and we smoked 'em, 114-96. Legend has it that the Purdue AD swore after the game that he would never have a Purdue team come back to Valparaiso, Indiana.

We have 2 Big 10 wins with Shay not playing up to her
level which is a good sign for us. She is a career 80%
FT shooter.

Baseball has beaten two B1G teams in the same season...

'74 - went 1-1 against Purdue at EmBauer... and also went 1-1 in West Lafayette
'75 - went 2-0 at Purdue... that's the first time I can find for baseball with two ROAD wins vs B1G teams
'76 - went 1-1 against Purdue at EmBauer... and also swept Wisconsin 2-0 in Madison
'77 - Played 4 games at Purdue, went 2-2
'85 - Beat Indiana and Purdue at EmBauer
'91 - Beat Indiana and Wisconsin both on the road
'94 - Beat Michigan State in East Lansing and beat Indiana at home

Clearly the RPI of the Valley (women's) is top 10.  Drake beat Minnesota by 30 the other day.  I was looking at one of the pre-season magazines who also had The Valley (men's) considered "major" versus mid-major.

Much different team without White. Without her we are short our best shooter, penetrator, inside defender and rebounder. Miami certainly looked to be the slightly better team but without White it was never much in question.

2-0 vs Big Ten and 0-2 vs MAC?

I really think the MAC in women's basketball is better than the lower B1G teams. The games against Bowling Green and Miami were much tougher. Both Illinois and Purdue women's teams had some really poor shooting games against Valpo. Miami (OH) out rebounded Valpo by a huge margin, 50-26.

They mentioned last night that the MAC is ranked 5th (I think) in the RPI while the Valley is 10th (?).  On the road with 2 starters out, it was a tough situation.

They were 3-0 coming in with wins over Indiana State and Detroit Mercy.  We'll know more when they play U Conn!  We were well ahead coming into the 4th Q.  It was a late rush that got it as close as it was.

Yes, but my comment was specific to their traditional performance.  They were 3-27 last season, and haven't had a winning season since 2015-2016.

It's still a win over a BE school. That counts for a lot in my book even if the so-called Power Conferences don't emphasize women's basketball enough. Brace yourselves That's probably coming the more money those schools make. Hopefully we can build a strong brand in this sport as a school and continue our strong play overall as a conference. If we ever want to look for strength there are a couple really strong programs we could pick up as expansion candidates to make our league even better but it's nice to know that we play in a conference now (the MVC) that has long been a leader in women's sports and has historically been strong in and emphasized them.

Even though they're down early against a Wisconsin team that tower over them, this team is so fun to watch. Their passing is slick and they all work together. It looks like one big cohesive effort with fire and fight and they can sink 3s- The men should take some notes!

As for the team-----it sounded like another pretty solid performance.

Great preseason for the women.  Love the unselfish play and the coaching.  Plus being able to shoot the ball doesn't hurt at all.

Another solid win for the ladies on Thursday, against UNI at home!  Shay took over the game in the 4th quarter, much like JFL did for us last season.  It was a joy to watch.  UNI was coming off a sweep of Illinois State.  The MVC is currently the #8 conference in the NET rankings, so we have already proven that our conference needs to be ready for us again this season.  Great job, ladies!

Looks to me that Dunson will step right in and average 14 to 18 minutes per game. Her shot looks a little rusty now but her past numbers look very promising. Her defense and positioning look top notch.

Will be watching!  This is a team worth following and will win and surprise a lot of folks  (if they haven't already!),  UNI was picked third in the conference and started four seniors and one junior including one player who was voted first team all-conference last year, so they have a lot of experience and talent.  Let's hope for a win tonight. Home wins are critical.

Well played and coached game by UNI. Our shorter bench looked like a factor with bits of flat footed, indecisive play. As good as our freshmen are I would expect Interrante, Gunn and Earnest to see fewer minutes in the heat of MVC play. With 2 games under her belt I am still trying to figure out how good Maya Dunson is and can be.

We had our struggles last in learning how to change the game-to-game mindset, since there wasn't a day to rest, just watch tape, and get a good walkthrough in, but the ladies fought last night. They will get their legs under them. Shay is a floor leader, and our quiet leading scorer. She will take over the game, if and when she needs to. Not have Profitt or a couple others in the trenches doesn't help matters, but the team we have the floor is handling themselves and the game well, especially in this season of unknown.

Heading to OT at Illinois State!  We tied it with a Shay 3 with 4 seconds left, and then experienced back-to-back bone-headed plays.  Van Kempen did not realize the situation, and fouled on the inbounds pass, to let ISUr go up 2, but then ISUr fouled us with 3.2 seconds left!  Absolutely terrible situational awareness by both teams, but it is now an OT reset.

In the first game Valpo was down by 10 at half due to some hot shooting by ISUr (when did those ISUr & ISUb designations stop?) and early foul trouble for White. She didn't score well (4 pts). In the third quarter Valpo came some back, down by 6 going into 4th quarter. Valpo tied it up in the 4th quarter on Weinman's, Frederick's & Morrison's scoring but pulled a bonehead play with the score tied when Van Kempen fouled the ISUr player with the ball with 4 seconds left. She had forgotten the situation. ISUr made the 2 FTs and took the lead. Then an ISUr player pulled the same bonehead play by fouling Shay with only 3 seconds left. Shay made both FTs, talk about pressure, and sent it to OT. But in OT ISUr dominated when Valpo missed two 3's and two other FGs. Valpo also missed two 3's in the last 12 seconds. ISUr OTOH made 2 two pointers & 2 threes and 3 FTs in OT. Valpo just didn't make enough shots in OT. Lost by 6.

Very interesting story. Good move on Valpo's part, as well as the two women. I can think of three men who recently played while 17 on other teams that I follow closely. They each played at least three years and are all now in the NBA, so I hope this works as well for these two women.

Wow, just wow.  Absolutely bone-headed foul by Dunson on that last second 3 to lose.  It is a desperation 3, where she was not at all set.  Why try to block it while it is still in someone's hand?  That always drives me nuts, and is the difference between a shot-blocker and someone that has no clue on how to block a shot.  You go where the ball is going to be released, not for their hands.   Just stupid...

I watched parts of the game while working and the women's team is excelling in an extremely difficult WBB conference. If we finish in top 6 we have an excellent chance to get to the title conference tourney championship game. Unfortunately we have shot poorly in a few games and those games have effected our conference record.

Latest MVC Net numbers

MSU.                26
Drake               52
ISUr                 71
UNI                  72
Bradley            95
Valpo               114                      We are 3-4 against the teams above us.
Loyola             140                       The Ramblers are now 5-2 against Valley competition.
SIU                 189

If we can sweep Bradley then getting to 10-8 looks realistic. That might be a 5 seed. Hitting 11-7 would take some luck but our late season schedule is favorable.

Very impressed with my first glances of Sheehan. I wasn't picturing her getting minutes alongside Shay Fredrick but now that I've seen it, her potential roles for next year have expanded. She looks to be an excellent and confident 17 year old ball handler (17 total minutes without turning the ball over) and I have to wonder how much better she becomes.

She actually played 12 minutes. This girl was not asked to score in HS so she shows up here at semester break and in her first 3 appearances (29:15 min) she hits 4 of 9 3's with 5 rebounds, 2PFs, 2 BLKs, 1 STL and 0 TO's. Not bad for a 17 year old back up or back up to the back up point guard!

I noticed the same thing.  Near the end I was wondering where our bigs were because we were being badly out-rebounded.  But that is why she is the coach and I'm not!  I bet the Loyola coach has nightmares about Shay.  Wasn't she the one who scores something like 6 points in a minutes to beat them last year?

Our Men's team could really use some training from the Women's team, specific to passing.  The Women swing that ball around quickly, and don't throw the lollygag-type passes that I see from our Men, where they expect the defender just to stand still and let them catch it.  I see some brute force passing, and love it!

Frederick is just a superstar when she is on.  I hope that she stays for her entire career, and doesn't get pulled away to a P5, like a Tabitha Gerardot, by graduating early.

Great OT win for the ladies against SIU, and we are now 11-10 (7-7).  We have 2 games left at Drake, and 2 to makeup against Indiana State, which should make us 9-9, unless we surprise Drake, or ISUb surprises us.  ISUb is terrible at Women's Basketball, similar to Evansville.

If this team stays together next season, it will be a special year.  Since Grace White is returning, we are just losing Ellenson and Morrison from the playing roster.

Good game to game adjustments by SIU put us in a hole by halftime. Our 3's only dropped at average rates so we had to win by other methods.

Quote from: valpotx on February 28, 2021, 06:07:59 PMWe have 2 games left at Drake, and 2 to makeup against Indiana State,
I don't think there is any planning to make up the ISUb games but I might be wrong. A split at Drake would be great!

It isn't but it looks like the best that can be done. ISUb will finish MVC play having only played 14 games. MSU and Valpo will both finish with 16. The rest should get to complete all 18. On the bright side an 8-8 record should be just as good as a 9-9 but there might be some tiebreakers that get wacky?

For many reasons including momentum getting a split at Drake is very important.

This is what was said on 2/8, and I haven't seen any updates since that time:

The Missouri Valley Conference has postponed the Indiana State-Valparaiso women's basketball series (Feb. 13-14) at Hulman Center in Terre Haute, Ind., due to positive COVID-19 test results among Indiana State's Tier I personnel, which consists of student-athletes, coaches, managers and staff. The Conference will announce make-up dates for the series/games at a later date.

I'll worry about the guys at 8:00. Meanwhile our girls will play Drake (NET 46) at 5:00 on ESPN 3. We are currently sitting as a 7 seed but even a split with the Bulldogs could in theory boost us to the 4'th spot. Should be some great basketball so tune them in.

34-34 halftime. And I was wrong---in theory we could still finish as the 3 seed. No, it isn't going to happen but a 6, 5 or 4 seed would all be great!

I wish we had a mascot. Great timing on the execution of the Crusader. Really genius going into the tournament!

Include the Grace White missed FTs, missed 3's, missed bunnies, poor defense and it tells the whole story of the 3rd quarter.

Drake-- VU  tips at 3:00PM on ESPN 3. We still have a distant shot at the 5 seed and any kind of win would boost us past Loyola as the 6. That path would match us with ISUr or UNI but both the 6 and 7 seeds keep us on the same side of the bracket as Drake (which is good). We have split with both ISUr and UNI. The 7 seed likely gets us a game with Evansville

In both losses, our defenders played #43 too tight on the 3-point line.  She never wanted to take those shots.  She wants you to bite on her fake, so that she can drive and dish to #42.  We never adapted.

The only positive to come from this weekend, is even though we will be the #7 seed, we should beat Evansville.  This will setup a rematch with Drake, and we know that they aren't anything special, as they were in prior years.

Even with this loss we finished the regular season with a Valley 6'th best 114 NET ranking. We have that NET despite a 7-9 MVC and 11-12 overall record.  :o

I am not a strong advocate of replacing Lottich but my early take is that coach Evans and the girls will finish 2021-22 a minimum 35 NET points better than our guys! Heck, lets make it interesting and jump that to a 45 NET point spread. How about some debate and maybe a few suckers taking the bait.  ;)

If there are any Lottich die hards left now is your chance to step forward and speak up!!!!!

Attention! Warning! Danger! When you start watching our girls  cooperate and execute you may never stop. We now sit at 110 NET and a deep MVC tourney run would be much less of a shock than what our guys pulled off last year.

This could have been only some crude but playfully meant flirtation, but if it helped her game I am glad she took offense.

First mention of Pitts in months. Her first game injury ended her season at 12 total minutes.  :'(  Hopefully she can return healthy next year and pick up where she left off. At 5' 7" both Shay and Ilysse are just a bit on the short side.  ;)

Ellenson is on one of the worst 4-5 minute stretches of play, that I have seen in some time.  I still don't know why we post her up for corner 3's.  She NEVER makes those.  I hate saying it, but she is the liability on offense, that has led to a 2 point game turning into a 9 point game.

Last night our bench had 0 points, tonight they've got 2. We can't win games with so little depth when we have to play back to back.

I seriously don't get why both our Men and Women foul so much on 3s...if you are 10 feet away by the time that someone catches the ball to shoot, you are not going to block that shot.  Just try to distract them, but DO NOT end up within 2-3 feet of anywhere that a jump shooter might land.

Unfortunate end to the season, leading to a 12-13/losing season.  It is unfortunate that we did not get to play ISUb, as it would have been a 14-13 year, and continued the progress a bit more from last season.

Coach Evans chose to sub Gunn and Dunson while leaving Ernst, Shehan and Van Kempen to watch from the sidelines. I agreed with her thinking and might well have done the same thing but it certainly didn't pan out tonight. Credit to Drake. They took away much of what we wanted to do on offense.

Dunson shot the 3 well as a freshman (at Loyola) and her first few games on the floor with us. Since then I doubt if she is 15% and like Sackey or Buggs they were giving her room and daring her to take it. That is unfortunate because she can drive if closely guarded. She was in for her defense and had she hit her first 3 then who knows? Confidence is so allusive when coming off the bench.

It truly was fun to watch this teamplay.  It's an exciting style with 3 balls being launched all over the place.  There is good news with our three best players returning but--we will be VERY short. Losing two starters who are 6'2" and really only having Van Kempen at 6'0" with any experience, will certainly hurt.  Gunn and Dunson aren't the answer, neither can shoot.  When we play teams like Drake with their big, strong farm girls, we get smothered on the boards and around the rim.  I don't see that changing.  Still a pretty exciting year with two BIG wins.

Are there any teams anymore that shoot FTs well? The North Carolina MBB team basically lost to Florida State 69-66 in the ACC tourney because they missed 11 FTs. Then the Tar Heel fans lambasted the idea of playing in a tournament at all. Why do they even need to play in a tournament at the end of the season?

This hits on Evans' only flaw I see. She has been unsuccessful recruiting size. Maybe that's the plan. Latest stats we were 7th in 3 pointers taken, 9th in 3 pointers made, 152nd in 3 point %. We are 332nd out of 336 in rebounding margin.

We'll see. I think losing both Ellenson and Morrison will leave us very shorthanded in the post.  I guess she is relying on sheer toughness in players like Earnest, as well as improved shooting.  When the shots fall we are hard to beat.

I think it is interesting that we actually performed better against the B1G schools than we did MVC schools. If you are not familiar with our style of play it seems we are more effective. If you know us, you know that we can be taken advantage of inside and MVC schools with a good inside presence really have hurt us. As much as Evans wants to run and gun I think to be consistently good she is going to have to adapt and figure out a way to play and rebound with the bigger girls. I know we cause a ton of turnovers, and that seems to be her current strategy to counteract a teams inside presence, but it seems that in the second half of games the other team makes adjustments and we end up on the short end of these close games.

I'm not sure Brown will start but certainly any 38.2% 3 point shooter is going to find large minutes in the Evans offense. This is another player that coach Evans recruited in HS so we should already know she is a good fit.

Taking a step back it is fun to realize that she is transferring UP not down. She departs the 13'th best A-10 conference for the #7 MVC. In the process she leaves a 245 NET team for our #122 landing destination. She is closer to home also!

No, that wasn't the reason.  The two kids who came on at mid-season were both from Illinois where the entire season had been cancelled. The two had finished their high school degree and so it made sense to get them on campus for an early semester of college ball.  One got some playing time.

I have zero idea how good the previous freshman class or the incoming class are talent wise, though some have noted that they are pretty good.  With Grace and Morrison back that means four of five starters return (I think).  Playing time will be at a premium.

Crazy roster size! I'm counting maybe 12 girls that coach Evans would like to provide with major minutes.  :o  Some good players may not see much floor time particularly at the guard positions. Do you just go with the hot hands or find a regular and shortened 10 girl rotation? Is too much of a good thing still a good thing?

The team is losing 2 players to graduation, and 1 of the two walk-ons is not coming back. Not sure about the other walk-on. With 2 more incoming freshman (the 2 that didn't come in early), that puts the roster at either 14 or 15, depending on if the 2nd current walk-on stays.

Not sure the exact classifications but
SR 5 Morrison, White, Frederick, Weinman, Dunson
JR 4 Pitts, Brown, Van Kampen, Zacker
SO 4 Gunn, Earnest, Interrante, Johnston
FR 4 Sheehan, Beyer, Malone, VanWeedlin

That's the 17 I had. Not sure who the 2nd walk on was perhaps Dunson. I assume Butler left after playing one minute last year.

Zacker is a walk-on.  No way that Dunson is a walk-on.

I forgot to count the recent transfer.

Zacker is not returning. Not sure about Butler, the other walk-on.

Morrison plans to return unless she finds a job and starts her working career. Pitts is expecting a child, so not sure about her status.

Ah, that explains why Pitts didn't play after the first few games.  Congrats to her!  I remember that Dawn Vandermeer also had her college basketball career shortened, due to getting pregnant.

And Shantil Robinson from several years ago, maybe a decade even. She actually came back and the team and coaching staff helped out with the baby/child...

Dawn's daughter just turned 17. Dawn was a local kid. Her brother went to UIC around the same time.

Former VU walk on gets a mention.

Interesting article the entire team plus parents complained to the AD about the coach and he ultimately supported the coach and everyone but one left and she has been told he can keep a scholarship but not play.

Top assistant Gabby Johnson is no longer listed as a coach so expect another new coach.

Update: Gabby named to staff at Butler. She has been retweeting Butler stuff for a couple of weeks so this isn't a surprise.
