Valpo Football / Re: Valpo: #246 again and again

Never once did I mention that Valpo should do away with football.  However, what I'm saying is the current coaching system isn't working.  I realize this might be a tough message for some to hear - but the truth hurts and the sooner the AD and other administration realizes it, the better for all.

This business of scholarship vs non-scholarship is a mute point.  REMEMBER - valpo plays in a league with other non-scholarship teams and no matter what it's still a DI football team that can be competitive along with the others.

Stop pointing fingers at 'the other guy' - the former HC is long gone!!! Face it - Carlson's coaching system isn't working and for all those that think it is continue to sending him great emails to stroke his ego.  But just remember it's not his ego that should be the concern.

Oh, wait better yet - attend the golf outing next year cause I'm sure he will have a tough time trying to make that a reality next year but I suppose the program can wait another 2-3 years.  AND YES you better believe fundraising is a big part of his job.  He aint making a difference on the field or with donors.

HA, HA - I certainly got some feathers ruffled.  This is a forum to express opinions whether the majority agree or not.

The reality is this....if you hire someone that was CLEARLY the least favored person for the job and they perform poorly it is a reflection on you.  Would the transition take time? OF COURSE. Did anyone expect the team to get progressively worse? OF COURSE NOT. This AD is in a tough situation.

Regardless of the record, Valpo is a DI-FCS football team.  Any school with pride and integrity would see the writing on the wall and make changes - not only with players but also coaching personnel.  Look down the road at Notre Dame they wasted no time making changes until they got a system that worked.

The lack of support from alumni, donors, corporate sponsors, etc... tell the bigger picture when the football golf outing was cancelled due to limited participation.

Regarding players...again talent is there but the desire to work together as a team on the field is gone.

Regarding Carlson...again there is no excuse for the poor play calling. He needs to learn to coach the players on the field not his pipe dream fantasy league.  Once this is realized Valpo might win a game or two.

There is talent on the team and I really believe each of the players give 100%.  However, collectively - the players are still having a difficult time working and playing as a team.   The only that this will change is with good coaching and mentoring.

Which leads me to another point.  What we continue to see week after week with this team isn't a lack of skill but a team with poor leadership from the coaching staff.  Valpo needs to reevaluate if Carlson is the guy for the job.  I understand that he was able to re-build programs but in this case he is in too deep and can't seem to swim his way back to the top. It is more than obvious he is scrambling.  I'm not here to coach bash just offering an opinion.

As one fan said during the game after a poor running play "it's a shame the best running back #44 is standing on the sideline"  In Carlsons post-game interview he mentioned that #44 had the flu.  I'm sure it was the flu but not the kind to be cured with this coaching staff.

The AD needs to cut his loses, save his job and get rid of Carlson.

Clearly, someone of you weren't in attendance at the game on Saturday.  If so you'd realize a few things:

Carlson is not only using Freshman/RS Freshman, that's just his excuse; perhaps to cover his base (or even his job).  Check out the roster #3, #4, #8 and #89 are upperclassman and not ONE of them made any plays.  Carlson is sticking with the same players with limited talent that have been dragging this team in the mud for years. Where are the leaders, the playmakers?  Well they're on the team and certainly some of them are true freshman like #84, #5 and #44.  But just watching the body language on Saturday it's obvious they are frustrated and disengaged.

Secondly, it was homecoming and the stands were filled with alumni.  If Carlson believes he needs donors and benefactors to help support the program, well he blew that.  Why would anyone toss money at a program where the coaching staff (and players) are struggling?  Heck, he didn't even realize the need to make any changes to the offense even thought the QB and offense couldn't advance the ball at all. This is Carlson's 2nd year and he has YET to bring in at least one win.

I often visit Valpo for a few games and I'm an avid college football fan.  I was at the game on Saturday with a few friends that happen to be alumni of the University.  I've been hopeful for Valpo and in fact I like to see the underdog finally win one. But after Saturdays game I have to be realistic, its not gonna happen under Carlson.  He can only blame the players so much at some point he needs to take a look in the mirror.

The best coach regardless of the players can produce a win.  Well, in this case it won't happen this year as Valpo will clearly be 0-11 – AGAIN.
