Bader's performance earned an extended ESPN highlight

Charlie Lee's play should have gotten the ESPN highlight by himself.  12 of the last 17 CSU points and 6 dimes to go along with 31 points.  Bader is a nice shooter, but again he did NOTHING but hit treys. But no one played defense in that game

The Blackhawks tradition goes way back -- the articles say 1985. But, I recall it starting earlier and only towards the end of the song and then somewhere around 1991 (Gulf War I), there was a special occasion (All Star game?) and the place went nuts from start to finish. According to the first article my memory is hanging in there. (Mrs 84 would ask how can you remember some of that meaningless stuff....?) Wayne Messmer is still one of my all-time favorites doing the anthem and his dueting with his wife was always some of the best harmonies for the old bar tune that is our national anthem. Unfortunately, Wayne had some vocal surgeries that reduced his ability and Chicago fans (especially Cubs fans) miss his simple, dignified renditions.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/11/sports/hockey/how-the-national-anthem-turned-into-a-blackhawks-rallying-cry.html?_r=0

Second article is not quite as in depth. But there is nothing like it at the Stadium. When we watch at home, we crank the stereo to fire up for the games. With our slow starts, maybe this will help a bit.

Yes, you all are right, this is clearly not the rivalry games of the past 3 years. Still, must win game for Valpo!

As someone who is both a Blackhawks fan and a Valpo fan, I honestly hope it doesn't happen.  I understand how people think its a Jim Cornelison thing, but it's really not since it started before he started singing the anthem for the Blackhawks.  This is a Blackhawks home game thing that gets done to applaud the men who are being honored on the ice before the game, veterans and current military members they have standing next to the anthem singer.

Even if Valpo has a member of the military on the court during the anthem, I will still stand there, as I normally do during the national anthem. This isn't a Valpo thing, let some teams have their home traditions, just because someone who is a part of those traditions is coming to your building, don't try make a sad facsimile of it.

I also get upset when I hear Blackhawks fans do it at opposing arenas, since it's most teams don't have military members on the ice while the anthem is played.

Quote from: Grizz on February 04, 2014, 03:22:17 PMIt took him three more shots then JJ to break the record, shot the same career % as JJ (40)and more important has beaten Valpo 3 straight times. Takes a real :censored: to make a statement like that. In fact I believe he beat (2-0) your back to back championship teams. So maybe as a wishing to be journalist you should watch your fingers. Or maybe do some research

I believe this was a shot at me... but it could be at LAA since he has the Anchorman quote as his sig... But I have the time to do some research and I'll do it.

1. The chucker comment and video was a joke, but I'll stand by it. JJ Redick was a chucker at Duke. Travis Bader is a chucker. You know who else is a chucker?

2. Alright statistical break down time.

JJ Redick took 1126 threes in his career (good for 7th all time and 1st in the ACC).  59.1% of his shots were threes. But here's the fun numbers.  Over his career he took 23.62% of his teams shots and scored 24.87% of his team's points.  Now when you take in the fact that he played 17.02% of his team's minutes. That seems about in line, but it's still higher than his share.  He also shot 39.29% of his team's threes.  He shot 3.1% lower from the field but shot 3.2% better from three.

Fun side note: JJ played in every game in his career.  Durability! He also did NOTHING in terms of rebounding, assists, steals, or you know... HE ONLY SHOT THE BALL.

Travis Bader took 1151 threes in his career (good for 3rd all time and, well he's been in 2 conferences so...). 71.98% of his shots were threes. Over his career he took 21.27% of his teams shots and scored 21.20% of his teams points. Seems about right but he also played 17.01% of his team's minutes. Do these numbers look familiar?  He's shot 39.97% of his team's threes, 4.7% worse from the field and 3.5%
better from down town.

Some fun #BaderWatch: Travis also has played in every game in his career.  Durability! He also did NOTHING in terms of rebounding, assists, steals, or you know... HE ONLY SHOT THE BALL.

Wait Bader shot 2.5 more threes per game than Redick? Oh. Then you know what, I'm sorry to JJ. He's not nearly the chucker that Bader is.

Dority is filling up the points category at an ungodly pace recently, but Sykes is filling up the entire statsheet with APG and RPG.

I think Dority has a really strong case for defensive player of the year though with what he's done to Sykes, KP3 and Barlow x2

?  Please elucidate.

Substitute "against" for "of" and reread.

Thanks. Yeah so like hypothetically (ignore wins adding up)

1. GB 14-2
2. Valpo 12-4
3. CSU 12-4
4. YSU 10-6
5. WSU 8-6
6. UWM 8-6
7. Oakland 8-6
Ect...

Say Valpo and CSU both went 1-1 against GB, it would go to each team's record against the next highest seed, YSU. If Valpo goes 2-0 and CSU 1-1 against YSU, Valpo is awarded tie breaker.

If there's a three way (or more) tie, like with the 5-7 seeds above, the records against teams involved in the tie are added up... So say UWM was 1-1 against WSU and 1-1 against Oakland... That record combines to 2-2. WSU beats Oakland twice and splits Milwaukee: 3-1. Oakland combines to 0-4 because they never beat UWM or WSU. So they're seed 7.

But what if the record of three teams is 2-2 in the 3 way tie? Then it goes to the best records against the top seeds. This happened to valpo, CSU, uwm in 2010. Valpo (eventual #6 seed) had an 0-2 record against #2 WSU while Uwm and CSU split WSU. You had to go all the way down to CSU's 0-2 record against #7 Detroit to resolve that tie. If by some miracle that formula still doesn't work, it goes by RPI.

Let keep the rock rolling off the cliff.

Not sure how many people are planning on attending the pre-game pep rally buffet but I'll be there.  Apparently today is the last day to register as well.

Anyway this should be a win and a great chance for locals to see the team on the road.

Another area that we must improve on is free throws. Valpo ended up 17 for 26 but that was only because some different shooters finally got to the line. If it weren't for Peters, Adekoya, Dority and Carter getting to the line it would have been a lot worse. At one point in the game 7 FT's had been taken by both teams and only 1 FT was made. Early in the game Valpo was 2 for 8 on FT's with Coleman, Gueye and Capo taking the free throws. Normally you would have a lot of confidence that those three players would make their FT's. Yet only Bobby made any FT's and he was only 2 for 5. LaVonte, as usual, led the team by making all 6 of his FT's since he shot all of them in the 2nd half.

The poor FT shooting could have hurt us if Brown had been playing and the score had been closer.

Yes we only shot 65% this game, but that's a small sample size. We're shooting 76.4% for the season and are currently ranked 23rd in the country. Only Detroit (6th in the nation at 79.4%), Youngstown (16th in the nation at 77.6) and Wright State (20th in the nation at 76.8%) are ahead of us.  We're one of the best free throw shooting teams in the nation.

Before the game started LaVonte had to take something off his jersey and it looked like Bobby and Clay also had had to do the same. Does anyone know what that was? It was speculated around me that it was something to do with the All Players United going on in Evanston.

Also here's my recap of the game: http://www.midmajormadness.com/horizon-league/2014/1/30/5360396/green-bay-vs-valparaiso-game-recap-crusaders-dump-brown-phoenix

That and Dority is producing better than earlier and Carter is playing so they don't need to produce as much as they were earlier.

Quote from: classof2014 on January 23, 2014, 04:54:46 PMI think this game will be a good measure of Carter's defensive abilities. Perry is the best player in the league. If we can keep him under 20 points and 5 assists we win. If Carter can't handle Perry than we probably lose.

I think Dority guards Perry 85% of the time tonight.

What about the year we went to the sweet 16?  We should have had a better rpi ranking than 58.

We were 83rd that year.  The MidCon was atrocious and our schedule wasn't exactly littered with high ranking teams.

I can only calculate PPS if I have statistics to look at, usually all I have to look at are box scores at the end of halves, games, and season stats.

Chef seems like the perfect person to give you insight on Nickerson. I'm hoping he is a Jordan Fouse type player with a better jumper.

More likely a bigger version of Jordan Coleman

if he's a Fouse type player I will love having him on the team for 2 years and will gladly plug him at the 4 with Alec manning the 3.  If he's a bigger version of Coleman, then I'd love to see him play the 3 with Alec bulking up and taking over stretch 4 duties, so long as we have a 6'10" true 5. I think Alec projects better as a 3 personally, but I also thought Rowdy was a stretch 4 in a three guard system and both he and KVW would have benefited from playing with a true 5.

I would love to see us use a 2 PG system next season with Carter and Lexus starting and the Canadian Duo backing them up. From what I've seen all 4 of them can hit outside shots, handle the ball and when Carter and Lexus have played (very limited) minutes together they can defend either guard position. I don't know what the Canadians bring in terms of defense but even if we play a 2-3 zone with them in I feel they are quick and long enough to cover the top.

Speaking of JUCO transfers, Jared Drew is currently averaging more than 15 pts and 5 rebounds per game at Lakeland (Moussa's Junior College), and he is shooting 45% from the 3-pt line. He is not the big man to replace Moussa or Bobby, but at 6'6" he would be a nice replacement for Coleman. He'd also be a fine complement to his former teammate at St. Louis, Keith Carter, and I wouldn't be disappointed if an effort were made to bring the two together again.

He'd play behind Alec or Jubril in the rotation and with the Canadians coming in to probably play behind Keith and Lexus, I think we need to focus all our efforts on getting a 6'10"+ player in.  Or at least a 6'9" 240+ guy. If they did bring him in then we could possibly run a really small lineup with a front court of Alec, Jubril and Drew, but holy crap would we be overmatched by bigger teams.

Could you do a by position PPS for the year? So like this:

1: Lexus, Carter
2: Dority, Yeo
3: Peters,  Coleman
4: Bobby, Adekoya
5: Moussa, Vashil

I don't know if that's possible or if it's way too time consuming, but it'd be interesting to see breakdowns of what we've done positionally.

Quote from: humbleopinion on January 19, 2014, 09:09:39 AMHow many of the turnovers were offensive fouls?  Overall, I thought the team did much better of playing under control on offense. Does Moussa intentionally miss bunnies to pad his rebound numbers? ;)

Of the 15 turnovers, 5 were offensive fouls and 1 was on the shot clock violation which should have been wiped out, but rules is rules.

Considering the MSU-OAK game was at an NBA arena and odds are 85-90% were MSU fans that should probably be thrown out.

Could someone pull together the attendance vs. the amount the arena holds.  The Resch Center and Nutter Center are much larger than the ARC obviously, so their attendance will be slightly inflated.

January 13, 2014, 03:55:26 PM
Quote from: wh on January 12, 2014, 06:09:36 PMWSU's "hedging" defense really disrupted our offensive flow.  As we all know, a regular part of our offense is our 5 setting a pick at the top of the key for whoever has the ball, then "rolling" to the basket.  Not once when their big would stay with the ball and hedge our guard were we able to make them pay for leaving our center unguarded.  Last season we rendered their hedge totally ineffective as Kevin would set the pick, then receive a lob over the top as he cut to the basket for an easy layup. This year we don't have a guard experienced enough or a center athletic enough to make that play.

While I think this belongs on the WSU thread, I'll respond in line here.

I agree with about 75% of this statement.

1. Our PGs (Lexus and Keith) are inexperienced, but Jordan and LaVonte can run the hedge and if they have an open lane to drive, they can with great skill.  While Lexus and Keith are great ball handlers and I want them to continue to run this offense, I think it should go through LaVonte 60% of the time and Jordan, Lexus and Keith starting up the play at the top of the 3 point line the other 40%.

2. We don't have a center athletic enough to make that play, this is very true, but last year the person running that play was 6'8" and 240 lbs. Looking at our roster we currently have a 6'8" 225 lb freshman, a 6'7" 225 lb freshman and a 6'10" 235 lb senior who all have excellent hands, great body control and the ability to close out at the rim. We also have two 7' who can pass the ball reasonably well, or at least can be coached up to pass better.

I'm going to give a pro basketball analogy, despite my dislike for all things in the pro game. Can we use Vashil and Moussa like a lesser version of Joakim Noah early in his career when he couldn't score and was used for defense, rebounding and inlet passes to the lane to Luol Deng and Kirk Heinrich? Can we use Jordan like Deng, or Alec, Bobby, and Jubril as Carlos Boozer-lites or even KVWs from last year??
