Gotta agree with INDY...seems we should be getting better info regarding who is on team and where...esp on who returning prior to the team picture.

Low 50's for # players in Spring ball now, WR, OL and LB not deep, esp WR, it will be a scrimmage 4/18 due to roster size. Nice sized recruiting class, assume a 10-15% recruit attrition rate prior to Aug and a few more once things get rolling.

Yes I did see the game, I am simply summarizing some aspects of the season so far in terms of the D and the O. I am very familiar with situational subbing and various packages for down and distance. All other teams seems to have 1 or 2 RB's that lead the way...sometimes subbing backs isn't ideal and often shows gaps. Unlike other teams who seem to keep their backs
on the field no matter what the situation.

After the St Joe's game HC said going back to basics and all slots up for grabs...no real changes were made, and here we are.

I read your reply, I see "drops" "misses" ..."ran out of gas" "within a 2 point conversion to tie" "dropping interception opportunities" ...we are talking about D1 football here right? Not a coaches - parents meeting after a Pop Warner film session?

I truly do feel bad for the players. We lost the game. Badly. Hope things get better with Butler.

We just cannot keep giving up 400-600 total yards each week and expect anything good to happen ..why pass when you can run on us and why run when you can pass...film is film, is no one getting called out each week?? The other teams know how and where to go after us. Same missed tackles, bad angles, no big plays or sticks to turn a game around, no changes in the D personnel. For the O...do we have a #1 running back yet? Each week it's different, not like these 3 kids are tired of running the ball. Stretch the field, middle screens, reverses??  Special teams...?  Well you get it. Time to shake things up and get some MOJO going. Or this tape of 14 is looking like 13.

Valpo Football / Re: New Football Head Coach announced

Just some quick notes from the reading of prior posts:

Lehigh and Coach C did do some quality recruiting in FLA ...so hopefully those connections remain for this class.

Having a D with good athletes is nice, but that didn't do much this year or past few...getting torched by basic routes, missed tackles and lack of focus... when playing vs a spread O you need 3 things ingrained onto a D:

- They must be very heady and smart...know ALL the coverages, blitzes and the adjustments real time and not a week or 2 later when and if you looked at film. Own what you do on the field, good or bad and never make the same mistakes over and over.

- They must be playmakers...and kids that take the field with a chip on their shoulder and some swag / leadership. Expecting to win and getting to a point where even giving up a first down in inexcusable.

- They must be physical, from special teams to goal line and all in between. Teams need to fear running routes over the middle and getting jacked. QB's need to fear a OLB, SS of FS coming off the edge from the blind side. Pressure and schemes break a spread Offense...creates picks and allows for big hits that motivate and build a D.

Wishing the best...hoping too many kids won't leave and those that stay get to a new start with new standards and opportunities to shine.

Good point on my posting 62...I would say "young" means an up and coming O or D coordinator that is looking to bring in some  staff, hire some new staff and recruit very well. The class of 2017 is loaded with good players and I would hate to see some of them leave when most really DID come here to try and turn the VALPO program around. And there are quite a few returning players that will really help. But the loyalty Carlson and others felt to some plays and players planted the seeds for mayhem and mind boggling losses as big plays were missed and TDs given up. You make a mistake on either side of the ball you are pulled, coached, coached again and then maybe sat for the game or a series or more. Players make plays, and we had...? forced fumbles, pick 6's, ran how many reverses, screens in the middle, option passes?? ...each game has 5-6 plays that determine an outcome and build a mindset whereby losing is unacceptable

VU needs someone young and hungry to make a mark....Patriot league....IVY....someone who knows how to communicate to players with a record of changing things at a high level and will demand the culture and then facilities change!!! A coach who will bring in a staff that is cohesive and holds players accountable while at the same time instills a mentality of the even thinking that losing is possible is disgraceful. Enough is enough. Why is this message so tied to settling or being in the game? Get some speed and some swag and a smash mouth 'tude that is soooo sorely lacking! DO we really think Marist and Butler and others ran some complex D or exotic plays against VALPO???? NO! They broke down film, saw the same things being done the same way with the same staff and players and went right after it. Its not complicated. We arent facing complex D's ...or the spread O of the HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL 5A - 8A FLA and TX level of speed....[/b] IT CAN BE DONE!

I will comment and confirm that this 2017 class seems loaded with talent; These recruits came from some incredible HS programs  ...what have they seen so far???

As mentioned, no adaptability...and certainly ...no accountability. Same issues and gaps week after week. Not tough for even a mediocre program to scheme against VALPO...

VALPO could be at .500 or better.

Valpo Football / Re: Valpo @ Drake
October 27, 2013, 11:15:44 AM
Some quick notes from Drake: Great effort from the team in the game; in the 2nd half no adjustments were made on our side...they send the house , 8 in the box and we do nothing to extend the field (except for the TD pass, we ran no middle screens, no quick slants, no skinny posts, no stop / go routes etc). D played well but had chances to key stop drives when still 10-7 and gave up some big pass plays with the middle again wide open and 1 or 2 blown coverages. Need to get the freshman RB's more touches, their D see's Hall and knows its prob gonna be a run. We have a bruising power back in a spread...with 8 in the box he gets stuffed before he can get going upfield, yet we continued to do that??  Going against the wind we had some WR's way too far out on splits for a even 50/50 chance to make a completion. With our record, 4th and short...you go!!!!Was told the Drake TV/radio announcers spoke highly of the efforts of the  Valpo team and remarked often of the bright future with our team on the field.  Would agree with most posted comments, and I have said since game 2 that the karma is bit negative; need to have the kids in a mindset where they are instilled with confidence, with the accountability for their mistakes and some 'tude, a chip on the shoulder, and "refuse to lose" mentality.

New group of RB's will be there to help get the running game going and then lanes for Hoffman seam, skinny post and deep x routes will be there!
On D...can't get beat deep or have mix ups in basic coverages...or give the long 90+ yard drives. Need some picks, big hits and forced fumbles to slow that down ASAP.

Kicking game is coming on. VALPO 31-28

Valpo Football / Re: Valpo @ Mercer:

so easy for other schools to scheme vs our D and O...same plays used to score on us , no changes anywhere. For the O...One back in protecting, they send the house, pressure, int, sack... they go single coverage and we have yet to see a break away RB threat to worry about so far. Gotta wonder what happens in film...?? You return 9 or so starters on O and D and have to worry about Mercer???  Very confused.

A great deal of insight here...yet seems like the same system...same results. Hopefully some changes are made in both the system and approach to the games. For example,  I know this freshman class IS talented and it would be a shame if they get bogged down in the mayhem.  Saw some nice plays and motivated players at the scrimmage when they got in there...maybe rotate some in and turn em loose!!! Nothing to lose.

Valpo Football / Re: William Jewell @ Valpo

VALPO football and some observations:

1. Team warms up and gathers in the tunnel with little or no emotion, many seem lost and casual.  No juice & no 'tude...not good. They should ALL be taking the field like pent up dogs ready to smack WJ all over the turf.
2. I have never seen so many missed tackles, dropped passes, bad angles for pursuit and blown assignments (even at the HS level let alone here). No corrections are made real time, no subs put in and the same players make the same plays over and over.  Film sessions should be lasting 4-5 hours!
3. How many kickers do we have?
4. At this level you make things happen instead of using the old "one play either way and maybe we win " line. Take the field expecting to dominate, focus and finish. Jewell hit harder all day and their coaches were louder as they pulled players on the spot to reinforce their talking points.

QB had awesome game...congrats!

Jesuit DB Tim Foley said in an e-mail to the Tampa Tribune that he has committed to Valparaiso University.
"I loved the campus when I went for a visit two weeks ago and have been accepted to the D1 school and admitted to the business program where I intend to pursue a degree in International Business," Foley said in the e-mail.
The 6-foot, 180-pound safety had 23 tackles, an interception, two forces fumbles and a fumble recovery for the 7-3 Tigers this past season. Foley also had offers from University of Rochester, Bates College, Stetson and Worcester Poly Tech.
Valparaiso is a Division I program that plays football in the Pioneer League and the Crusaders went 1-10 in 2012.
