Valpo Football / Re: 2015 Football Season Post Mortem

Geez, a list???

Yeah, ummm let's see, the 4 starting WR's coming out of Spring, per the HC...Morgan, Catrine, Shea and Foley, rarely a snap with 2 of those 4 out there at once, let alone all 4. Jean Rene played well, other than that the WR's could not get off a press or block. Going "power" with 2 TE's and expecting them to open up holes? Stetson anyone? At RB, tried over and over all year to get Legend reps, in the end, he averaged 2 yds per carry. Should of been red-shirted. We had Bastin, Jake and B-Hall ready to go. The O-Line...jumbled and juggled all season to get freshman reps. and they were "monstered". Lead to some concussions, no running game and a weekly debate internally on who was going to start or not. So, this all helped to lead VALPO to a whopping 1 win. Now the red=shirt QB quit, more to follow. You have a roster of 90+, you make changes, you make players earn their spots. The entitlement plan for 2015 was a disaster.

Hmmm soooo, the H-Man is correct ref current state of the team. Major issues with players and how the some of staff handled accountability (I did my job, you guys s@@k). Also, the messaging of "we are working towards the future" to the existing players. The reality was we had freshman and some soph's simply walk into positions in August that they never really earned. Am guessing they were promised a few things in recruiting? There will be some players not returning. In fact, we have a situation of a perfect storm brewing. I guess some freshman unhappy because of what they went through this season and also upperclassmen who witnessed a change in the coaching philosophy from the prior season. It is quite obvious having watched the players lack of some focus during the games, the staff (staff running out of the press box to scream at players on the field) and the expectations we had coming into the season, that 2015 was a major step back. Finally, for those of you saying maybe the freshman were just better, wake up. WE WON 1 GAME. We were smashed by Stetson. Stetson. Not Dayton. Stetson. Yet no attempt was made to try and use other players who had played last year, won a few games, are mentally tougher and came to VALPO trying to revive the program. I am objective enough to know there were a few impact players from the freshman class that deserved major reps, however, I feel that the team could of mixed in upper classmen and made more adjustments week to week to find the right mixes( IE not subbing 4 RB's per game) and game palns. Will see what happens.

yes..better than 2 years ago. Worse than last year, by alot. Guess that's the issue, many of the players who got PT last year have been left out or part of mass "subbing" week to week. As for the D, time on field? Nope. Stetson and others have taken initial drives 1 and 2 and gone right in for TDs. The D doesn't even have time to get tired.

Well, these posts are interesting. Are you all watching the same team as everyone else? See parents of players and other fans yelling and screaming at the staff, and then leaving the Stetson game? See the prospective recruits leave with 5 minutes to go before half? Am sure these rebuild sound bytes hit home with them! See many players come out for the post-game meal? Sorry but this year some of the PT and scheme decisions @ VALPO have nothing to do with attitude , entitlement or age of players. Here are a few quick points to ponder. Why would we use a Legend Choudry, who has a great future, to gain 2.6 yards a carry when we have our entire backfield returning? Why not red shirt him if possible? Bastin was perfect to be our starter, yet we rotate on and on, for what? What did we gain? The concussions were brutal, but do we look at who was playing OL at the time and allowing QB and RB to get hammered? The WR group was, according to HC, looking like morgan, shea, catrine and foley. those 4 have not been on the field together for one play this season. Not one play. Has our offense been so dominating that we could not deploy that set? Sure, mix in the talent of jene renee and some others when possible. Why did we take a step back on D? Pretty much had all returners. Are we not going to mention that? It's pretty simple, you are not rebuilding when you are nearing a 1 win season. And I agree 100% on it being admirable for the HC to take the blame...but don't bother owning up to the loss and staff schemes and "overcoaching" if you are not going to get involved and make some changes. These kids come to VALPO because they are smart. They too see and internally question things each week. All those who read and post to this site expected more this season, and what we have seen remains in some part, inexplicable.

Heard same type comments as 2624...think the offensive side "overcoaching" VS Stetson and continued lack of, or zero, playing time for many returners has hit home. These are very smart kids and they see what is going on. It's a shame.

Said nothing about deliberate in trying to lose...no one would do that.

We have 1 win (and that was barely). There seems to be an overt effort to get freshmen in the mix. No matter how they do. Even after mistakes (See 2 of the 3 turnovers this week), no changes are made.

Did we see the RB' s shuffle earlier this year , 3 -4 at a time? Why? The WR's playing? Where is Shea? Morgan? Others? Why are we not 4 wide most of the time? Why were we subbing Bastin?  And yes, there are players on the bench who helped to beat teams last season. This team was set to be a possible 4-4 in league play.

Maybe 1-9...wake up sader nation. The 1-9 train is coming. The freshman experiment has failed and this is what we have to show. In the process many of the upperclassmen who SHOULD be playing and who earned spots have checked out. That is obvious from the sights and sounds of the field / bench. Also, all this talk of us relying on our D this year, subbing freshman in there too, seams, skinny posts and at least 3-4  "slant and go's" a game. Throw in the usual 8-10 RB and Slot screens and we get, "monstered".

Don't know what is said to team at halftime of these games, if anything. The captains, picked by the coaching staff (not voted on by the team, never heard of this) are same from last year...must be at their wits end watching this unfold. As the season has progressed, the changes we hoped to see have not happened. Instead things have been more complex and more difficult to understand. Most frustrating is this continued hope that some of these routes, schemes and players will suddenly get better. They will not. And all the while, many players who are not intimidated, who came here to win and who got reps last year, just sit. Not even being given a chance to make plays. Stetson is a 3 year old program.  And we just gave them their biggest win of the season. All Aboard!!!

Guess we will see what happens...but it is clear that the team has some issues with the players out there thus far, IE, the O line has 3-4 freshman in the mix and we see the run game and QB protection situation getting worse. The WR issues already mentioned. Watching the OC come out of the booth and onto the sideline during the last 2 games would normally signal some changes, but so far nothing.

Understand USC 4 Valpo...agree we were blown out.

SD went in at halftime and said enough of this, and then we got smashed. We went in at half and said, wow, we are still in this. My subbing note goes to the lack of cohesion formed with so many subs at RB and WR this stage of the season and during our forced use of 3 different QB's.

I agree best players right now should play...NOT, "maybe going to eventually be a great player by game 7 or 8".

The 50 and the 2.2m? Hoping its getting an education @ VALPO then worrying about reps.  ;)

Thank you 2626 AND UMSB.

You are spot on! The films do not lie and I cannot believe some of the things going on in terms of personnel decisions ...a few points to ponder:

1. the number of packages we put in and subbing patterns will never allow for any type momentum (mostly O but I do see some kids on D getting torched). I cannot help but notice that the teams defending us sub out, NEVER. They could care less who is in our packages.

2. Can we now say it? The freshman experiment is OVER. In the first few games, fine, if you think that makes sense, but now, done. It cost us a league game. Glad you recruited them (mainly from small 2A, 3A or private schools) coaches, but your plan is in disarray.  They seem lost and you cannot blame them. I see MANY of OL and WR's sitting on the bench (I do not count cof game) were at the 1 spot on depth chart coming out of the spring game. Many of whom played vs SD last season also.

3. the OL has freshman playing and when you see who they are up against on the opposing DLine? Size, speed experience? No wonder 3/4 of our QB's have been injured and we have NO running game.

4. Our #1 WR's, according to the Trib article posted (Morgan, Shea, Catrine, Foley) have not been out there as a unit at all. I see mainly freshman at WR and every week it's obvious that they run some poor routes, cannot block downfield and most importantly, cannot get off press coverage (all echoed by the HC in his post game interviews). These 3 issues cause the delay in QB release and penalties. Again, I know it is a tough spot for a freshman, so I understand, but these are glaring concerns. You have to be mentally tough too. I see a few of these players in shock or tears after the game.

5. the D? And the sidelines..."no swag, no mojo" players not holding other players accountable and motivating them?

6. We don't need to work in 4 RB's...Bastin gets the start and plays until HE says he is tired. All the teams that run through and over us have 1 featured back and 1 person to replace him. How can any of our RB's get going when they are subbed in and out constantly?

The body language of many of the returning players on the bench was not good at all as the game progressed, same as the Sacred Heart game.

We have the talent to play so much better. Things cannot get worse, so make the changes and get the right players ready for Davidson.
