Valpo Basketball / Re: Coach Lottich
March 17, 2017, 01:59:14 PM
I'd give him a solid B grade.  I felt like he was outcoached in some games.  He's still new, so it will take time for him to develop.  He might end up being a substantially better strategist than Bryce.  We will see if his assistants and he can recruit at a higher level than past Valpo coaching groups.

I can say that he excels in his judicious use of timeouts.  A+ in that category, but that grade may be a bit inflated in light of timeout use at Valpo during the recent past.   ;)

Tevonn has such fluidity in his game. Sometimes, he literally seems to float in/on the air.  Micah definitely has a touch of this quality, too, and I think he would benefit from a redshirt year to pack on the pounds and strength train.

Actually, the majority of Valpo's guys could benefit from adding more muscle and better strength training (Peters having set the bar for this).  None of our guys are in danger of overtraining to the point that their game changes.

I'd like to see a deadly three-point shooting specialist.  Plenty of other teams have them, and they are true weapons when needed.  We are going to be coming from behind a lot next year against several better Horizon league teams, so we need lots of help from someone who can consistently make three-point shots.

Thanks to Tevonn for coming to play hard tonight.  He was a one-man show.

We would be a perpetual bottom-tier dweller in the Big Ten.  The level of talent in that league is far superior to the Horizon.  My Big Ten graduate friends always try to convince me of that.  I have to admit that they have a really solid argument.

I have to hand it to Oakland and Kampe.  They made the Horizon proud tonight.  After the Valpo implosion on ESPN, we needed Oakland to remind everyone that the Horizon has some potential to win games against power conference teams.  With Nunn eligible this Fall, I think Oakland is top-25 and the best Horizon squad in years.

Valpo Basketball / Re: 2017 NIT?

I think we will be in, but our seed will be low.  Unless Shane and Tevonn have monster games (which is possible), I doubt we win a game.  If they go on a tear, and Sorolla shows up, we have a shot.  Would rather see Lexus at the helm instead of Micah.

I'd love to see us out of the Horizon and into a conference with better leadership, but Valpo's season just ended in an embarrassing whimper, and we were far from impressive.  Does a higher-ranked conference really want a team that could not muster enough energy to score more than a decent high school team..in the conference tournament of all places?

I think we win a game or two, but if we make it to the title game, it's questionable.  We are on a downward swing, which is not where we want to be now.

On the other hand, it is really difficult to defeat a team 3 times in a season, so Oakland has its work cut out for it if we play them.  With Alec we certainly could win that matchup.  Without him, it's a minimal chance.  But the Pats won the Superbowl despite a minimal chance, so there is a bit of hope (although they had their vesion of Alec Peters at the helm).

Wish we could've pulled it out today, but without Alec at nearly full strength, we are a mid-tier Horizon team.  Thanks to Shane and Tevon for their extra effort.

Yet another fine showing by Valpo on national tv.  Great pattern.  :(

Lottich appeared to be completely out-coached by Kampe, and the guys were just outplayed tonight.  The team understandably was distracted.  The coaches have to step up in these sorts of games to help the guys overcome bad news and adversity.
