Horizon League Focus: Under new academic rules, league would have lost postseason team

"If new academic rules passed by the NCAA Division I Board of Directors this week were in place, UWM wouldn't have been able to play in the postseason...teams with scores of less than 930 won't be allowed to play in a postseason. Last year, Milwaukee's APR was 926, meaning it would have missed the NIT."

Horizon League men's basketball APR, 2009-10

1) Butler, 1000

2) Loyola, 990

3) Wright State, 979

4) Wisconsin-Green Bay, 962

5) Valparaiso, 951

6) Cleveland State, 944

7) Youngstown State, 936

7) Detroit, 936

9) Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 926

10) Illinois-Chicago, 918

This is a major change that is certain to shake the very foundations of college basketball.  According to the ESPN article below, 12 teams that participated in this year's NCAA tournament would not have been eligible under the new rules, including Big Ten schools Ohio State and Purdue.

Personally, I am fully in favor of any system change that forces more accountability for academic performance than presently exists.

Butler #1 in both academics and bball. Valpo, again, in the middle of the pack. Hell, let's go get some Chinese. Grinell did. Their 2015 class is reported to be made up of 10% Chinese citizens, half of whom aced (800) their math SAT's. As far as their bball skills-----? Unfortunately, it appears that it is Butler once again the Alpha Dog. Why?

The real hit will be with college football bowl games.  With a few weeks left in last years season, they were worried that not enough teams would be eligible.  Now that teams need to have 6 wins and an APR above 930, there will be some bowl games without participants - unless they allow Division I-AA teams to go to a lesser bowl after the I-AA playoffs.

Here is a link to the NCAA APR site, where you can do different searches:

According to this:

Valpo would be Alpha Dog in baseball, Men's Tennis, softball, tie for Women's Golf (with Butler), Women's Track, and Women's Volleyball.  Not too shabby.  Now we need some championships!
