Jackson is the first African-American head coach in the history of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, at a historically non-black institution, a fact both he and Tyler note with pride.

"He has paid his dues,'' said Tyler, alluding to a coaching career that started at Valparaiso and has included stops at Arizona Western, Temple, La Salle, and Illinois State, along with one season in France as the head coach of the Elancourt Templiers. "He's been around the block, a remarkable story.''

He got his masters at VU, and he was on the coaching staff as a Graduate Assistant in 2003.
