Once again, I had to rely only on the game tracker. I peeked in at 14-0 ( ) and again at the beginning of q3. Not surprised to see Butler back in the game at that point but ecstatic over the Gessinger KO TD return. From that point I was following each play as it came across. I was dismayed that I was seeing too many 1 & 10 passes even though Cartales was running like a truck. Took some pleasure in holding BU to only a FG instead of our 2018 traditional bull fighter defense giving up a TD. I think it was near the end of q3 that I thought our coaches finally saw the light bulb go on. Lots more runs (and adding Boxrucker more to the mix) and a solid drive deep into Butler territory. Then two straight passes after a 1st down - yikes. But I lbelieve some hard running kept the us going.  Then we throw a pick into the end zone despite moving the ball on the ground. 

But we get stops and 2 picks in q4. We keep the ball pretty much on the ground most of the quarter and finish the game like the team we all thought we'd be 5 weeks ago.

IMO, that 4th quarter, observed only through the game tracker, was the finest quarter of Valpo football all year. It is something to build on for next Saturday and, if the vibes this forum is sending out are finally breaking through to Kroenke Hall, the basis for game planning for the remainder of the season.  It is only logical when you listen to the coaches in preseason — "our strength was depth and experience in both the OL and the defensive front 7." It would appear that the staff has finally listened to their own words. Here is hoping that they dont forget the lesson they learned yesterday.

A great performance from all three parts of the team.  But, we are now facing some real depth issues as true freshman are being forced into the action. Campbell, our best remaining DB with JDM still out, left the field on crutches and Cartales also left late in the game.  It is looking more like a MASH unit and no weeks off for the remainder of the season.  Hopefully Turner will continue to get well and that JDM finally clears concussion protocol.

I thought Butler an easier offense to defend. They don't do anything in particular really well and focus on a really short passing game. There's not a lot of sleight of hand to the offense and the QB really isn't a runner.

That's an excellent question but I think anyone with any semblance of knowledge would realize that was a complete fluke.

Since then they've run the ball vs. Taylor pretty well but were outgained vs. MSU by over 100 yards and shut down by Drake (although Drake didn't overwhelm offensively).
