The Eagles also have been buoyed by the addition of Betsy Adams. After three years playing at Valparaiso, the senior transferred to FGCU, and was eligible this year. With 62 3-pointers, Adams is the leading long-range shooter on a team that is second in the NCAA in 3s per game.

"Coach Smesko has expectations and standards for us," Adams said. "He doesn't lower those for any reason, even with so many new girls. He's put the bar up there. Through a lot of preseason workouts, we've risen to that."

FGCU struggled to a 6-5 mark early, an aberration for a team that averaged just five losses a year in Smesko's first 10 seasons.

But when the players finally clicked, there was no stopping them.

"There was one practice (around Christmas) where we all came out hyped up and ready to go, and you could just tell," Meador said. "It was glorious."

It was around the time the Eagles had one of the biggest regular-season wins in their young history. FGCU beat defending Southeastern Conference champion LSU at home on Dec. 28. It was the first of the Eagles' current streak of 19 straight victories.
