New Mexico sophomore guard Cullen Neal's severe ankle sprain, suffered last week in Puerto Rico, will not require surgery, the school said Wednesday.

The timetable for Neal's return is three to five weeks.

He was injured during the Lobos' Puerto Rico Tip-Off first-round loss to Boston College. After scoring 26 and 23 points in New Mexico's first two games, Neal played 23 minutes against the Eagles and scored just two points prior to the injury.

Neal, who averaged seven points a game last season as a freshman, was expecting to be the Lobos' top playmaker and scorer this season. A year ago, he battled injuries and illnesses before being a key member of the NCAA-bound Lobos.

ESPN's Andy Katz contributed to this report.
