The Indy Star did a All-Indiana College Basketball team and no Valpo players make the list. We are going to need some of our Indiana native players to make this list the next few years in order for Valpo to have continued success.

Valpo's current Indiana Native Players:
-Ryan Fazekas (Chesterton, IN) SF - Junior (RS) 3-Star
-Derrik Smits (Zionsville, IN) C - Sophomore (RS) 3-Star
-John Kiser (Noblesville, IN) SF - Sophomore 2-Star
-Steven Helm (Valparaiso, IN) PG - Sophomore (RS walk-on) 2-Star
-Mileek McMillan (Merrillville, IN) F - Freshman 2-Star
-Parker Hazen (Columbia City, IN) F - Freshman 3-Star

Does anyone know if there is a "one that got away" among these players for Valpo? Did Valpo target or recruit any of these kids?

I could be wrong but I seem to remember some interest in Devin Cannady now at Princeton then at Mishawaka Marian. Several other names are also ringing a bell but.  ???

Valpo's recruiting success doesn't need to be validated by some list of in-state basketball recruits. Valpo's recruiting radius is 12,450 miles. It's success is nearly unparalleled among the nation's Mid Majors.

Based on stats from previous years of the Honorable Mentions, I'd say that someone forgot about Smits.  Fazekas will definitely have an impact, just not in 2017-18.

As long as Valpo remains MVC competitive, I don't care where the players went to HS - just that they are good representatives of Valpo and can play ball.

True Valpo Basketball doesn't need validation from this publication but we are going to need a few of these guys to become impact guys and major contributors to the team down the road. Specifically hopes are high for Ryan Fazekas, Mileek McMillan, & Parker Hazen. We also need Derrik to develop into a capable big man.

I think there is reason why none of Valpo's guys made the list, mainly most of them are young players & either played 1 season or haven't even made their first career starts yet in the case of Mileek and Parker. Fazekas had some very tough luck at Providence with the mono his freshman year and the nagging injuries, which prevented him from shining.

I think if they redo this list in a year or 2 there will be Valpo players on this list.

Also except for Smits and Kiser all of Valpo's Indiana student athletes are new to the team. I'm hoping for a big improvement from Smits in his sophomore season and Kiser was a walk on last season. The future is when we expect our Indiana athletes to show their talent. And as was mentioned we recruit from a large radius. Our biggest success in acquiring players lately has come from Illinois and the Chicago area (Peters, Adekoya, Williams, Dority, Carter, etc). We really don't need to be overly successful recruiting in Indiana but the talent from Indiana is coming on board right now.
