The pregame article in the NWI Times mentions the final NCAA decisions on both Dino and Vashil.  Disappointing to hear Dino will never wear a Valpo uniform, but it'll be interesting to see what we do with the open scholarship for next year.

I would definitely like to know a little more about why Jakolis is ineligible for Division I basketball at the NCAA level. It's unfortunate that the NCAA sat on this decision so long that we could plan ahead to keep a couple more scholarships available, or maybe look into the situations a little more before offering to Dino. Best of luck to him wherever he winds up.

That does open up a scholarship for next year, but with Boggs becoming acclimated this year and both Capobiance and Fernandez becoming eligible for next season, it's hard to pinpoint an exact need for next year's team.  With so many seniors on next year's roster, this might be an opportunity for Bryce to either bank the scholarship for a year or look at another DI transfer who can sit next year and be available to contribute immediately in '13-'14.

The article indicates Dino will not be eligible for Division 1 NCAA.  Does that mean that lower levels are ok?  Or does that completely rule out NCAA eligibility?

That would leave NAIA or NCCAA.

He would probably be desired by both organization's member schools.

By now you'd think an eligibility process would be in place for all NCAA hopefuls. I guess they expect the interested schools to do their homework prior to extending an offer. It'd be interesting to see why he was deemed ineligible. Is it something that should have been known before now, or something that is just now surfacing?

Actually, without really knowing what a stud he might have been, I'm thinking this may be a very good result for us.  As a freshman and sophomore, given our depth, his playing time would in all likelihood be very minimal.  So now, as haze said above, we have the chance to bring in another Bogan or Boggs type who could be really helpful after sitting out next year.  Remember, the cupboard will not be empty even with all the graduations next year.  The following year, after our Sweet Sixteen run next year, we still will have Jay as a senior, Vashil as a junior, and Bobby as a senior.  We will have, based on current commitments, two potential Indiana All Stars as freshman so if we can bring in a Bogan or Boggs type, we will have two very goods guards and two presumably very good guys up front, as the core of our squad.  Not bad!  ;)

John Eckert who is 6"7 from North Judson is someone you wouldn't think of, but he is a beast. If Eckert could shoot more, we could replace Dino with Eckert.

Imight or might not have mentioned this last year when this name came up, but there was a Fred (I believe) Eckert who was from Judson that went on to play for the Dayton Flyers in the early 70's. Probably some relation. He was maybe 6'9'' 240 in the late 70's when somehow at a winter time open-gym scrimmage I got drafted into the job of trying to guard him for 3 or 4 minutes; and thats all I want to say about that.

Son of Fred, according to this comment from the source for Northern Indiana HS basketball, www.etpearl.com.

North Judson senior John Eckert already has 1,071 career points, ranking sixth all-time for the Jays ... He might top the 1,686 scored by his dad, 1975 graduate Fred Eckert, who's No. 2 on Judson's list, but '86 grad Kirk Manns' school record of 1,962 is probably out of reach.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the extra scholly. Not sure what the target should be, or is...Maybe just sit on it unless there is somebody special in the pipeline. In order to get a gamechanger, sometimes you have to take a chance early.

Seriously, no.  Add eppy and ep to my list of most hated made-up abbreviations.  Just sayin' ;)
