How much shorter than Capo did you need??  ;)
Season Results: CBI/CIT: 2008, 2011, 2014  NIT: 2003,2012, 2016(Championship Game) 2017   NCAA: 1962,1966,1967,1969,1973,1996,1997,1998 (Sweet Sixteen),1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2013 and 2015

Capobianco appears to be as good (or better) than advertised!  I don't expect him to score 20 every game, but he really looks like he could be a 17 and 8 guy, which would be good enough for first team HL consideration.  He's clearly going to be better than Edwards was last year.

After these first two games, I bet Crean is wondering why he let Bobby leave IU.

As everyone has said in other ways- maybe Crean knew he wasn't going to play a DII or NAIA schedule for the whole season.

Good point Titan!  I'm sure Crean would have no interest in anyone who could run up the score against mighty teams like Ryerson (?) or Tiffin (?) either.

FWIW -- Ryerson is a Canadian University located in Toronto that, prior to the UDM loss, also lost to Wake Forest 80-88 at home in Toronto. Tiffin is a D-II college in Ohio in the same conference with Wayne State. Tiffin was 15-14 last season.

historyman

I know one thing. Bobby didn't throw any flower pots at Crean or his secretary!

I also know that UDM people should not be giving out any advice on how an athletic dept should be run!

Nanner....Nanner!!!

Anyone worry that if Bobby has a good season, he pulls a BWood and leaves for his last year of eligibility?

C'mon, Tex, you're the one with the girlfriend stories.  Bobby's girlfriend is from Valpo, and while she is at IU, she'll graduate this year and hopefully go back home where her senior boyfriend would also live.

Of course, that means that they'd have to still be together.

Nah.  Why would you sit out one year just to play one, and move again?  Nothing about his background says "BWood" to me.

Now, if Detective Sgt. Garber tries to apprehend him at 3 AM and he claims to be the best player on this team, well...then...maybe.

Not likely, but always a valid question when you have guys graduating before their eligibility is gone.  I guess the question also applies to Rossi and Chadwick after next season.

It's also valid because a.) Capobianco appears poised to put up some big numbers this year, b. ) he's got the size to compete in BCS conferences, and c. ) I sense that he believes he never got a fair shake at IU and would like to prove them wrong.  What better way to do that than to reappear in the Big Ten at a school like Purdue?

Right or wrong, it really seems like the big schools are aggressively recruiting 5th year guys who might be able to help their teams.  Until the NCAA changes the rule or cracks down on tampering by the big schools, it's something coaches need to worry about.

After the Julius Mays deal at WSU, Donlon was hot and even commented that he might try to make sure his 5th year guys don't graduate in 4 years so they can't take advantage of the rule.  He may have been joking, but I'm sure he's not the only mid-major coach to think about using that strategy to keep their players from being poached away by the MSU's and Kentucky's of the world.

Eddie got what I was saying, in that I imagine he is on track to graduate this year, and wouldn't have to sit out if transferring somewhere.  I guess it is a risk you take with transfers, so I will hope that he is more Cory Johnson than BWood in his thinking!

Well, if anyone is heading towards IU-Bloomington over a weekend make sure to offer BC (shorter but same amount of syllables) a ride.

No, I got it too, thanks--I'm saying why would you spend two years to play one, and then move again?  Even BWood spent three years here to play two, a slightly better ratio.  If he wanted to prove himself in a bigger conference, he would have transferred to a bigger conference in the first place...are you certain that no other team in a BCS conference wouldn't have wanted a B1G transfer?

ASU wanted Richie Edwards, for God's sake.

I don't know, but I'm sure Julius Mays could explain it.  ;)

Brandon only spent two years at Valpo.

Also, are we seriously discussing a transfer graduating and deciding to transfer again for his fifth year, before said transfer has ever played a regular season game?

valpotx

Yes, as unfortunately, it seems like that is the way college sports has moved forward.  It's kind of like a free agent in professional sports in their contract year.  They get one year of play to upgrade their next 'contract'

I'm sure we will continue to see some percentage of redshirted players transfer after 4 years.  That said, I think it will always be small and almost exclusively players who haven't transferred before.  I think back to the time between my jr. and sr. years.  The last thing I was interested in doing was leaving my friends and environment I was familiar with, enrolling somewhere else, moving my stuff, adjusting to a new campus, making new friends, etc. - all for a 9-month stay in a strange place.

I suppose if I had handlers constantly in my ear telling me how a move could be my ticket to future riches, maybe I would feel differently.  That said, I doubt if anyone will be telling any of our players that.

And with KVW and Rowdy graduating wouldn't Capo be "the man" in 2013-14?  That should count for something.

chef

Not to mention the fact that Capo and his teammates are close. Quite honestly, that was not the case with Brandon.

chef

Brandon however was close with Julius Mays.

Rather than acting the jilted girl and wondering when we're going to get dumped again, I'm honestly surprised we've made it through 42 posts on this topic and no one making a "how can anyone think Robert Morris could cut it in the Horizon League?" joke...

Apostle, if the Robert Morris we played on Saturday is the same Robert Morris that is being discussed in HL expansion talks, the jokes would be worth it, but a commuter NAIA school isn't going to get a lot of hype to jump that far, especially when they don't really have a gym to call home.

Brandon Wood was close with Brandon McPherson, this video says it all: Valpo Men's Basketball Interview with The Brandons

historyman

In one preseason NAIA poll Robert Morris (IL) was ranked 4th in the country. In a division with little height those RMU guards are pretty tough and athletic.

The difference is that I didn't come on here to "tout" either of our games.

1) I know the reality is that the only times these games have meaning is when the upsets are pulled.  See Butler vs Northern State in 2011- It was a harbinger of the season to come for that team.
2) I just hope that the Horizon League make it through them without any injuries.
3) My point is that we can't say any of out players look to be all-world from playing these exhibition games.  That was the only statement from Eddie that I commented on in my reply ( and I wasn't the only one that stated the same idea).
4) Even looking at your DI schedule- Capo won't be challenged until Nebraska.  That would be a good game to see if he is ready to be a big time DI player.

Finally, I wish Valpo the best of luck, except for two or three games.  I believe both of our teams have RPI boosted schedules.

The Horizon League cannot falter this year-we need to be a multi bid league- and then win a game or two in the NCAA.

People will have no idea how fast ESPN will stop putting our games on TV if we are reduced to a annual 1 bid, 1 loss team.

Run, see, that's where the humor comes in, pretending they're the same school since they have the same name....sigh...never mind.

Regarding Robert Morris.  The HL speculation surrounds the D-I school in Pennsylvania not the Illinois NAIA school.
