Thru the SIGNATURE ROAD WIN, aka the NonCon (minus the bracketbuster) 12/29

Broekhoff
Points:  now #15!
14.  Milo Stovall 1,345
15.  RB 1,291

At his current rate of 16.7 ppg he could score another 300 points, leaving him #6 all-time, ahead of Bruce Lindner but behind Raitis.  2 more postseason games at average would move him ahead of Raitis into #5, but only a ridiculous post-season run (3 post-conference tourney wins) on both his and the team's part would boost him past Lubos.  Then again...

Rebounds: now #8!
5.  Urule Igbavboa 706
6.  Joaquin Gomes 704
7.  RB 703

Rowdy's next game should boost him into 5th place.  At his current rate of 7.8 rpg, he could grab another 141, leaving him just 3 ahead of Raitis for #2 all-time (844 to 841).  Chris Ensminger is pretty much off limits at #1 with 910.

3-pointers:
2. Lubos Barton 244
3. RB 202

With 2.5 3s/game, Rowdy could hit another 45 (and boy, would we like him to).  He needs 43 to end up 2nd.  Bryce is in another dimension with 364.  So.

Blocked Shots:
6.  Antti Nikkila 84
7.  RB 80

Just as Ryan is as tall as they get on the assist list, he is almost as short as they get on the blocks list.  Only Harry Bell (6'4") is shorter; if Ryan continues at his current rate of just over half a block per game, he could get 10 more and end up tied with Morris Smith at #5 with 90.  Five more would put him in front of the legendary Harry Bell, which is about as good as he could hope for.

BONUS HARRY BELL ARCHIVE ARTICLE (NO NOT THE ONE ABOUT HIM GETTING KICKED OFF THE TEAM JUNIOR YEAR)
http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19901223&slug=1110936

Steals:
10. Tracy Gipson 138
RB 112

At his current rate of 1.3 spg, Ryan could snag another 24 and still end up just 2 outside of the top 10.  2 more postseason games at average would vault him there.

FT%, career:
6.  Rob Cavanaugh 82.5%
7.  RB 242/299 80.9%
8.  Dennis Olson 80.0

At his current rate of 80.9%, Ryan would end up just where he is, because that's what rates are.  Duh.  But averaging four trips to the line, he should get another 56 attempts, and at his current seasonal rate, would end up 294/355, lifting his career average to 82.8%, or 5th all time, behind Bryce but ahead of David Redmon.  It's the Valpo Free Throw, mate!

FT%, Single-season (min. 75 att):
1.   Casey Schmidt '93/94, 92.6%
RB 48 for 52 92.3%

With 23 more FTs, Ryan's season for the ages becomes eligible for this award.  Of course, he has to do just slightly better than he is right now. 52/56 (as above) would make him 100/108, or 92.6%; we do not have Schmidt's season to 4 sig figs, though, so who knows.

Buggs; Kenney

9. EB 352

16. Greg Tonagel 280
17. MK 274

20.  Mike Jones 217
RB 194

At his current rate of 3.71 apg, Erik could end up with 67 more assists, making him #4 all time.  He needs 54 more to reach that spot, or 3 per guaranteed game; in the post-Dority era, however, he is only averaging 2.4 apg.

At his current rate of 3.1 apg, Matt could end up with 55 more assists, leaving him tied with Rob Cavanaugh for #9 all-time.  It would be extremely difficult to pass anyone else (Jamie Sykes is 30 ahead of that), but in the post-Dority era, he is averaging 3.4 apg (4.0 last 4).

At his current rate of 1.64 apg, Ryan could end up with 30 more assists, leaving him #20 with 224 and knocking Mike Jones out of the top 20.  8 more would leave him solidly 18th.  More impressive is that he is the only player to spend significant time at the 4 on the list—the only other frontcourt player is also-6' 7" Lubos Barton (t6th).

Bogan whoops
3-pt %, career:
8. Mike Jones 40.9%
10. Brandon McPherson 40.7%
11.  WB 78/194 40.2%

Will Bogan gots to get on his horse and knock down his next two just to get back in the top ten. In the post-Dority era, however, he is only averaging 14.4 mpg (although 18.3 in the last 3 since recovering from his illness), compared with his season-long 23.8 mpg avg.

Nice update!  Thanks for doing it.

I didn't check all of the others on the watch list (RB for top-10 FT's, rather than "just" FT%, Kenney and Buggs for steals, Kenney for blocks, KVW for top-10 FT's).  But, I do notice that RB's ahead of Bogan for 3PT%.  199/490 = 40.6%.  Hitting the next would plausibly tie him with BMac.  Hitting two in a row would move him into 10th on his own.

LaPorteAveApostle

Thanks for the kind words, brothers.  And thanks for catching that on Rowdy.  I'll have to add him to that watch list--EXCEPT that what you have listed are pre-MSU stats, SO:
--Ryan is now 202/496, or 40.7%, or more or less tied with B-Mac for 10th place all-time! HUZZAH!

I checked the other things of which you speak, but, barring several statistical anomalies,
--RB will end up about 30 shy of the top 10 in FTs.
--actually, KVW, who I had thought unable to reach in FTs: if he continues going to the line at his current rate (and making them at this season's higher rate), could end up with 328 FTs, or tied for 7.  (Cut-off is 324 FTs!)
--Kenney is not a threat in blocks; although he had a great year last year he has only two this season, giving him 49.  Even at last year's rate for the rest of the season he wouldn't get there.  Although--he is playing more minutes...
--Nor is he a threat in steals (he's behind Rowdy in both total and rate, and Rowdy isn't going to make the top 10 at his current rate)
--Buggs, though, has 119 and at his current rate could grab another 22, leaving him with 141 and just ahead of Tracey Gipson for #10 all-time!  I'll have to add him to the watch list too.

Thanks for catching those!

I should also have noted that these projections are based on only 18 games:  Conf + bracketbuster + the one postseason game we're guaranteed, so that you need not worry that I'm guessing we play 20-odd more games.  Of course, it also assumes no injuries.

It should also be noted that playing these 18 more games for everyone involved will leave:
--Kenney tied for fourth with 129
--Ryan in third with 132 (sitting out P-Cal cost him Howard Little's 133, but another postseason game or four should take care of that), and
--Buggs, with 136, takes the Greg Tonagel Tenure Award and the top spot.

Let me add a couple of "Macro" record book items...

Since inception, VU has played 2,373 games.   Through the Loyola debacle, we have scored a total of 149,944 points.  So we are 56 shy of the 150,000 mark.  In those games, our opponents have scored 148,222 we have outscored our opponents by 1,722 points, an average of .7257 points per game.  If you really care about this stuff, we have an overall record of 1227 - 1146, 51.7%

Since turning to D-1 in 1977, we are 525-529... which shows you just how horrible things were in the 80's.  In those games our opponents have outscored us by a total of 288 points (73,783 to 73,495).  Nit Pickers:  Yes, I have the Purdue forfeit in here as if it were a "real game".  ok, back to your regularly scheduled RB update.

valpotx

Those are definitely very cool stats.  Nice to know that we will have our first chance to go above 0.500 in D-1 this year all-time, unless we were above 0.500 sometime soon after moving divisions.

It kind of struck me as being funny that any program would have the public address announcer announce that their program had scored a certain amount of points, during a game. The fact that Ryan Broekhoff scored the 150,000 point in the history of Valpo basketball was kind of cool. I wonder how many fans will remember who scored the 150,000th point when the 200,000th point in the history of Valpo basketball is scored several years from now.

OK... one footnote, asterisk, the 150,000 includes the actual final score of the 1994-5 Purdue game that they wound up forfeiting due to using an ineligible player.  Talking to the ESPN stat's guy, he said that "most" of the time, a forfeit will only be reflected in the W-L record of the team, and that all individual stats (player points, rebounds, etc) are retained.

OH, Trust Me.   That would NOT have been announced if it we weren't up by 23 points late in the game.  I have a direct "no distraction" rule I have to follow.  Notice no HL scores are announced when the team is on the floor.  Scores are only given during halftime and pre-game.  Player stats are only given when it is obvious they are coming out of the game for the last time.  If a player hits the 1,000 point mark, I have to get permission to go with it in advance... again, unless its a blowout in our favor.

I will remember the play: Ryan got that 150,000th point putting back the layup missed by Matt when he got hit hard in the ribs and no foul was called. Matt was lying on the floor under the basket then doubled over on his way up court yelling at the official while everyone was cheering the milestone, and Bryce grabbed Matt pulling him away from the direction of the official toward the bench. Matt was in pain the rest of the game.

In fact, the trainer's room will be busy today with players getting attention: Matt for his ribs, Erik for the ankle he twisted stepping on his own player's foot, Jordan for the arm he fell on when he was hit hard and slammed the court, Ben for his turf toe, and others for assorted bumps and bruises. Welcome to the physical play of the Horizon League!

OK a number of you have asked...(and lot more of you did not)...but here goes.

I don't have the play-by-play to pinpoint the player... but if someone has the old record books and cares enough to go through it...

The 100,000th point was scored November 24, 1990 in Boise Idaho in game 2 of their tournament against Eastern Washington.  We lost the game 77-66, but the 100,000 point was the 45th point scored in that game.

The 50,000th point was scored February 6, 1965 in Hilltop Gym in an 80-74 win over Butler.  the 44th point in that game would be #50,000.

Point #1 was scored in 1917, against Chicago "sometime before December 14th, when the second game was played".  We lost our opener 45-20.

talksalot

And the answer to the question of whether we have ever been above .500 since turning to D-1 in 1977:... no.  We started that year with 5 straight losses to (home) Western Michigan, @Illinois State, @Notre Dame, @Northwestern and @ Missouri.  We then won the Crusader Classic, and our first D-1 win as a D-1 program was against Navy 62-60 in Hilltop on December 29, 1977.

In the first 10 years in D-1 we were a symmetrical 90-180.

Yes, we've come a long way...

My father played football/basketball/baseball at St. Olaf, and has a program from when he played in the Crusader Classic at Hilltop against Valpo and some other schools (I believe Luther College was another).  I'll have to find it to see what year it was, but it would have been early 1970s.

I look forward to being over 0.500 for the first time as a D-1 program by end of year!!

Before the Crusader Classic was a bowling tournament it was a basketball tournament between Lutheran schools held in Hilltop Gym every year. Some of the colleges invited were St Olaf, Luther, Carthage(WI), Augustana(SD), Augustana(IL), Wartburg, Wittenberg, Pacific Lutheran, Gustavus Adolphus, Augsburg, etc. In 1977 near the end of the time Valpo hosted the Crusader Classic they played Carthage College and the game went to double OT before the Crusaders pulled it out. The pressure was really on the Crusaders because Valpo had never lost a Crusader Classic basketball game. The final score was 94-87. When Valpo decided to switch to Div.I they ended the Crusader Classic and were undefeated in that tournament.

vu72

I actually talked to Mark and Homer about this some time ago. My point was that in Lutheran terms, the Crusader Classic made it clear that there was Valpo, and everybody else. Now, given the fact that we play non-D1 exhibition games, why not replace those games with the CC?  In the case of Wagner (the only other Lutheran school playing D1) you pick up a D1 game as well.  You now understand how much influence I have!  :o

If it had a better RPI impact, we could have a Crusader Classic series with Holy Cross of the Patriot League. It would be a home-at-home competition for the "Best Crusader". The winner of the yearly classic would come home with a Shield of Glory to engrave the win into, have a nice history lesson out of that.

LaPorteAveApostle

I'd prefer calling that the "(Counter-)Reformation Classic".

BTW, some schools are scrapping the Crusader as a mascot due to PC -- all the death and mayhem associated with the crusades (we won't get into 9/11, OK)

So, the Counter Reformation Classic is getting my vote.

.....and a BBTW, if you are gonna do a faceless mascot, I like this guy (in the attachment, but with a color change) better. However, saying that, and with a nod to the Mascot string, the new Valpo Crusader has a lot pictures out there (as does the previous guy).

LaPorteAveApostle

That's just sad.  Every now and then some VU students get all huffy about the "Crusader".

They could bill it as the "Reformation Classic" when played at VU and call it the "Counter-Reformation Classic" at Holy Cross.
