PPS is a formula myself and another college hoops fan created to try to find a player/team's productivity per minute played.  Compute the good (PPS-O) and the bad (PPS-D) and the formula gives you your total (PPS).  Detroit, despite its tough schedule, appears to be the team that is playing the best as a group. Don't be upset about where your team is ranked at here, here really doesn't matter.  On the positive side your team has one of the lowest PPS-D which means you must have pretty decent shooting %, low foul rate, and/or low turnovers.   

This is just a predictor, and like all predictors has its flaws.  It's just for fun and may or may not have any real value.

I suspect it's a by-product of http://www.midmajority.com/p/1400 and talk radio.  Everybody's doing it, Big D.  I share your aversion to it, but I consider HC's version fairly harmless compared to ESPN/Talk Radio/RushTheCourt/CollegeBasketballTalk/Bracketology/CBS Sports/FSN/etc. morass.

I also don't participate in bracket pools or fantasy basketball for similar reasons.  I prefer to let 5-on-5 tell the story on the court.

On the other hand, stats by themselves are actually a good thing (especially aggregate stats that attempt to paint a more complete picture of what has happened), as long as one doesn't put too much stock in the rankings that ensue, and HC doesn't seem to do that.

Aggregate stats, advanced metrics are something I'm all for.  They help us see the big picture.  They help us evaluate more objectively what we've just seen.  They mean a lot less when it comes to predicting what *will* happen in the future, but they are somewhat meaningful for that too.

Ha, I have never put stock into it and have been the 1st to admit it. BigD has always had something to say about things I do for some reason. I enjoy stats and will keep doing it and keep posting it for anyone interested.

I think PPS has done a decent job of telling when a player is succeeding in their role.

my only problem is that I don't know how it's calculated.  and if that's proprietary, then fine, just say so and I'll stop bugging you.

I assume 1.000 is perfect--is it even possible, though?  and for defense, .000--but again, possibility?  Is .5 average?

Yeah we aren't sharing yet. Zeller scored a 2.09 yesterday, so any score is possible. We only use stats found in a box score.  PPS-O are the positives and includes FGM, FTM, pts, A, Reb, Steals, and Blocks. PPS-D are the negatives and includes FT and FG missed, turnovers and fouls.

Past experience says a .7 and up is all conference material whil a .85 and up is a NBA prospect.

Heres just a tiny bit more about what its about. Basically we are trying to see which players/teams do the most productive things during their playing time.  Zeller's 2+ is the highest I've ever seen, now granted I haven't run every game played like Broekhoff's 30 point effort a few weeks back he may have scored really high.  UIC's team score is middle of the road which tells me their record is a fraud (which I tweeted earlier today before they lost by 12 to Miami Ohio).  Illinois' would be a good example from the Big Ten, http://cbbpps.wordpress.com/2012/12/17/b10-pps-through-121612/

I do think it is neat to see how different the scores are for the Big Ten teams vs. the Horizon League teams and shows how those Big Ten teams really take advantage of every possession.
