Paul Oren tweeted out all his picks, I think he nailed it. Who would get your vote?

1st team - Broekhoff, Perry, Minnerath, McCallum, Sykes
POTY - Broekhoff
New Comer Team - Fouse, Aaron, Forbes, Capobianco, Crittle (I think he is new)
New Comer of the Year - Fouse
Coach of the Year - Donlon (eww), Drew

Agree for the most part. Sykes is good but not "1st team" good in my opinion, most of that argument based on the numbers I've seen because I never got much of a chance to see Sykes in action. For my money, I'd think that KVW or Averkamp would be more deserving.

My 1st Team and POY (carried over from my PER thread, which you should totally check out http://www.valpofanzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=1201.msg27682#msg27682):

POY: Ryan Broekhoff
1st Team: Ray McCallum
1st Team: Kendrick Perry
1st Team: Kevin Van Wijk
1st Team: Ben Averkamp
Best of the Rest: Nick Minnerath

I'd swap Minnerath with Averkamp based on boards and a slightly higher ppg number.  And he's a bit of a beast. (Plus, he's from Cape Cod  heh, heh)

Averkamp did miss the last 6 conference games. Just really tough to vote for him. Thomas actually had better numbers and played every game, so I put him on the 2nd team. I think 4 locks on the first team - Broekhoff, McCallum, Minnerath, and Perry. Kevin did get my 5th vote.

More importantly, who got your 1st vote?

I got a bad feeling that we won't have a repeat POY this year....

vubballfan10

Paul Oren had Matt Kenney on his 2nd team, which I see as unlikely for a couple reasons:

1. Voters might have already submitted their ballots before yesterday's fabulous game from Kenney.
2. While Kenney has had a ton of double figure scoring games in conference, he was very inconsistent in the non-conference season.
3. Not many single digit scorers make an all conference team. (Except Ron Nored last year)

Broekhoff got my POY vote.

If Will, Matt or Ben are wide open as a result of Ryan being covered like glue then they need to get and hit those shots. If that somehow costs Ryan the POY award then so be it. A tournament run is more important to everybody than any individual honors.

chef

For the record, I don't look at anything that happens during the non-conference when voting for all-conference. Kenney did average double figures in HL play, and also was second in 3-pt % and assist/turnover ratio. Paul's vote is very valid. Yes, it's unlikely Matt will make the all-conference team, but it's hard to argue with the vote.

sadly, i have to say that i agree. there's no question that ryan is the better all-around player, but his dropoff in february really opened the door for ray jr. couple that with not reaching double figures yesterday, and i think there's plenty of reason to think jr might get it.

When does this come out?  And how exactly are the selections made?

Postseason awards are being announced live tomorrow on HLN at 2pm ET.

Buggs owned Sykes, who was a combined 10/26 against us this year, with minimal other stats.  I haven't seen any other games for GB, but my impression of him before the announcers were giving him such credit, was that he was average.  I guess he just blew by other teams, and Buggs is just a better player  :)

POY Broekhoff.

Loaded with UDM and VU players, but I can't think of a more deserving combination of players.  Talk about a Mid Major dream team.  :)

i agree - that's a pretty solid starting lineup.

Ryan was a Player of the Week in the Horizon League four times—in November, December, January, and February. That is a high level and a remarkably demonstrated consistency throughout the whole season that deserves the Player of the Year award.

Newcomer Team: Fouse, Capobianco, Forbes, Belin, Aaron

I really don't believe that POY or the first/second teams include the entire season.  If that were the case, everyone would need to play a similar SOS, as you can build up wacky numbers playing a Chicago State, MEAC, or other terrible basketball schools.  I believe that Chef and Paul both indicated they vote based on HL games.

Congrats to Ryan, Kevin, LaVonte and Erik!

It's a shame Bobby or Matt couldn't get anything...
