Women's tennis breaks 50 match losing streak

Amazingly, since we joined the Horizon our women's tennis team has lost every conference match until this weekend's victory over Green Bay. With a loss the next day we sit at 1-51 career in the HL. We are 13-134 overall in the same timeframe.

It's amazing how bad we have gotten since I was last in school. We made the NCAA tournament during my last school year of 2003-2004, and were always competitive throughout. Congrats to us breaking the streak, though...

At least let Mrs. Cecchini help coach the team by being an asst.

well, i'm glad you asked.

you can't just GET there overnight. according to my profile stats, i average 4.138 ppd (posts per day). Here's how the magic happens:

1 is a TL;DR with a lot of numbers.
1 is a funny picture to more accurately express a reaction
1 is pointing out something someone else did or spelled wrong
1 is defending a3uge or agreeing with him
.138 is funny (or funny is .138)

Tx, if I remember correctly, the teams in the Mid-Con were worse than we were, so winning wasn't as difficult, and the players were good without all the scholarship and recruiting money they have now. They also had to play on the court by the football field, not over by the softball field.

They were worse than the HL teams, yes, but not enough that we would do that well in the Mid-Con and go 0-7 every season in the HL.

Could she do worse? The program is a joke. Why the coach has been retained is a good question. Look, we recently lost to a Milwaukee squad picked to finish 5th. The score? 7-0. The singles matches included three of six with scores of 6-0, 6-0. The combined singles scores were 72-11. That is not competitive. Not even close.

Obviously the program is not going in the right direction. Even if the program is not a high priority it seems it would be addressed to be reevaluated. To continue without change for a D1 would be lacking for a one-time successful school of this sport.

Apparently, historyman was way ahead on this: Tammy Cecchini has been named Assistant Tennis Coach.

Apparently, historyman was way ahead on this: Tammy Cecchini has been named Assistant Tennis Coach.

This was a no brainer. Tammy was the #1 singles player and part of the #1 doubles team at Penn State from 1991 to 1995. She was also an asst tennis coach at Lehigh for 2 seasons. I imagine she is just getting adjusted to coaching along with getting acquainted with living in Valpo.

Women's tennis must exist at Valpo just to provide women students a tennis program. There's no need for success here. Based on Valpo's vision, is it feasible to get rid of the tennis program?

Perhaps you haven't noticed that the men's team boasts two of the top players in the midwest with wins over Big Ten opponents. Why would we have a program with no expectation of success? We have now added an indoor venue for the winter plus the relatively new and improved outdoor facilities.

thanks for the explanation 72. I am not a believer in providing a sports program just for the sake of having one. There needs to be a strategy for improvement and success. Valpo's attitude of just providing a sports program concerned me with the football program the past few years and hopefully they are now in the right direction.

I think Mark has been pretty clear on how he wants his programs run. Perhaps we don't fire unsuccessful coaches as quickly as bigger state schools but there has been accountability. He has replaced coaches in football (twice), baseball, and women's basketball, for example. The women's tennis program has been the oddball, as it has been a constant bottom of the pack program. Swimming would be next but there a recognition of the vastly inferior facilities must come into play in evaluating coaches performances. Same would have held for track but that should change with the addition of first class facilities.

Heckler seems to very much be a proponent of our athletic programs, and wants to see sustained success. He gets that while academics are most important, that successful D-1 programs draw in additional interest from out-of-state HS students.

I'm all for the Avery's, and am sure that the Cecchini's will have success as well while they are here.
