Quote from: oklahomamick on February 27, 2016, 12:21:11 PMWatching Rhode Island put it on Dayton at their place.  If we played Rhode Island today, we don't win.
You can say that about any game.

Don't know about that...  I think Rhode Island would pay us back in a rematch.  Personally, I think we were playing better at that time in the season.

They had just lost 3 of 4 and also lost to UMass this month. Really silly to judge a team on just 1 game.

You realize 3 of those loses are #19 Dayton by 2, @ VCU plus @ Davidson.  tough set of games, a lot of teams would lose those 3.

And they weren't close in 2 of them. But whatever, we'll give them theoretical wins over Valpo. Let's give theoretical wins to Oregon State and Iona as well. Valpo's pretend record should be 43-25.

Don't go overboard...

I like playing make believe too.  Point of saying, "I don't think we beat Rhode Island in a rematch," is I don't think we are playing as well as we were in the stretch vs. Iona, Rhode Island and Oregon St.  That was an impressive set of results all on the road.

Could we do that again this week?  You don't have to actually answer that theoretical question....

Was Belmont's automatic NIT bid at stake? ahhhh no!
Was their Ohio Valley tournament seeding at stake?  ahhh no!
Was their possible NCAA seeding affected? The answer here is little or none. So I guess my question is how many RPI .00001 points and places might it have cost us? I only bring this up because over reliance on any one selection or seeding tool can be myopic.

HC

Some of the bracket guys on Twitter I follow have said RPI isn't really relied on very much at all.

and I put the RPI out there... because it's a comparison, it does show relative strength... and the other thing Belmont was playing for was local bragging rights.  Lipscomb, Tennessee State and Belmont are all within a mile-or-so of each other... they are recruiting the same student athletes.

Not raw RPI, but certainly record vs top 50, top 100, etc - this is still measured in RPI.

Time to expand this discussion a little... from "Opponent games" to "Opponent and other-teams-we-want-to-lose"

Tuesday 3/1/16
Central Michigan 65 Ball State (19-11) 57   That is the only VU opponent playing tonight

Also in action:
Dayton wins a big road game at Richmond 85-84 to move up to 23-6
Akron wins a MAC Home game with a decent Ohio team 91-76, zips move up to 23-7 and into the RPI #42, moving Valpo to #43.

Ark -Little Rock (27-3) 89 Arkansas State 80; UALR's RPI is still a healthy 36

St Marys at home to Grand Canyon, Gaels are up 8, at the half;  St. Marys RPI is 45; Antelopes are #95.

San Diego State is at the Pit and they lead the Lobo's by 12 with 12:00 to play

talksalot

Wednesday 3/2
Oregon is @ UCLA

Oregon State is @ USC - USC is hanging right with Valpo in the RPI; so this would be a big win for the Beavers and for Valpo.

and other games:

UMBC @ Stony Brook - SB is Mid Major #10 with a record of 23-6, Stony Brook is the best team this season that's never made the NCAAs

St Josephs at St Bonaventure... one of them has their bubble burst with a loss on Wednesday.
=======================
Thursday, 3/3
UMass @ Rhode Island... Please Rams... win a game...
Drake @ Missouri State... Please Bears... win a game

Others:
UALR @ Appalachian State - Mountaineers are RPI #283... sorry little rock...

SFAustin (Mid Major #7)  @ Northwestern State-Demons RPI is #345...SFA would accept a bid to the Horizon right now.

Hawaii @ UCDavis; Rainbow Warriors are MidMajor #8
=========================

Friday 3/4
Ball State @ Northern Illinois... please Cardinals... win a game

Indiana State @ Illinois State

and two big games in the Ivy:  Yale @ Cornell and Princeton @ Harvard
Yale (RPI 50) is 11-1; Princeton (RPI #33) is 10-1
(Cornell is 2-10; Harvard is 4-8)
Eli then goes to Columbia (RPI 123) on Saturday;
Tigers go to Dartmouth (RPI 284) on Saturday; and finish at home against Penn on Tuesday.

If they end in a tie (they split regular season); they will have a one-game playoff for the NCAA bid
Princeton's losses are to RPI:  7, 10, 26, 50 and 62... all on the road.
Yale's losses are to RPI:  12, 15, 86, 44, 33 and #161-Illinois.... all on the road

St Bonaventure  yes  St Josephs maybe not. They could still be in the conversation with some deep conference tournament success.

Oregon State is @ USC - USC is hanging right with Valpo in the RPI; so this would be a big win for the Beavers and for Valpo.[/quote]
An Oregon, Oregon St sweep puts USC out of the picture and losses to both UCLA and USC eliminates the Beavers as well. Hope for the best.

I hate having to sit back hoping for help!

SanityLost17

Teams we want to lose tonight:
Texas Tech (probably already in, but if they lose their final 2-3 games they still might miss the tournament)
Notre Dame (more they lose the more it hurts Monmouth, in case an at large choice comes down to us vs. them)
VCU
St. Bonaventure (I think St. Joe is in already)
Butler
Alabama
UCLA (Oregon needs to keep winning - UCLA is not going to make the tournament regardless)
USC (lost 5 out of last 6.  If they lose a few more they are going to be out.  Also hurts Monmouth since they played them twice.  Oregon State winning helps us.  This is the biggest game of the night for any slim hopes of an at-large.)
