Maybe (probably) I'm an old curmudgeon, but, this youtube clip of Valpo volleyball players looks like the whole thing is a joke.  They put this together AFTER getting killed at Ball State.  They are 6-8 for the first time in Avery history.  Just don't quite get it.

If any men's team behaved like that--let's say football for example.  After getting beat up in the first two games, they post a video of guys snapping towels and having a fun time.  Here we have scholarship athletes, who just lost, having a fun time.  Should they be in their rooms crying? No.  They should be in the gym figuring out what the heck went wrong.

What has happened to the VB team this season?  This has to be one of their worst starts in many years.  Is there a problem that we are not hearing about?

VB win's it's first league match, coming from two sets down to win 3-2. This with out three of their top hitters, who are out with injuries.  A gutty performance after losing to GB, on Friday.

The Super Bowl Shuffle was shot the day after the Bears were blown out by Miami on Monday Night Football.

The sentence at 1m15 or so is a bit more sober. But, obviously they're trying to stay upbeat here in public.

I thought the first 60 seconds of the video was fun and quality.

As far as I know, this is one player on the team, who has a thing for producing videos, exploring a bit of social media outreach with a friend.

Are they perfectly on message? Maybe not. (I'll admit that I didn't get the segment with the nephew at all.) But, I appreciate the video skill development and the fan interaction.

Emily Campbell played big minutes off the bench in Friday's five-set heartbreaker. Didn't play on Saturday.

So, still missing two-three starters.

vu72

Emily played tonight, not sure about the other injuries.  I still wonder why an experienced team like Valpo seems to fall apart without a couple of players. More evidence tonight that the 20 win streak is in serious doubt.  Lost is three games to a 1-3 Northern Kentucky team and now stand at 1-4 in conference and 8-12 overall.  Very disappointing.  :(

Emily was basically forced into action despite not being 100% - she didn't play in the first set, and just by watching, you could tell she's not nearly full strength.

And it's not just a "couple of players". It's three starters (Campbell, Ketcham, Currier), plus Lacheta, who had seen regular action due to the injuries. The healthy players are being shuffled out of position to fill out the lineup, and there's no depth right now - if somebody's having a bad match, there's nobody to bring in for them.

Is there any chance these kids can get healthy enough to make a run in the conference tourney?  It is just a shame that with 6 seniors they can't put together a better season.  What kind of injuries have they sustained?

A wonderful win against first place Oakland last night, on the road, 3-0.  Apparently both of our setters were out with injuries so we were having our libero set underhanded!!  Amazing effort!

I heard some of the story. Twitter exploded. The players and staff seemed elated.

But, I'd not heard the underhand piece! That seems crazy.

And apparently it was with the libero jersey on - I don't know how much that complicates things/further astounds.

I'm very far from a volleyball expert.  Here is what was posted as part of the story and the rule concerning libero setting.

With setters Lizzie Zaleski (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) and Tarrah Lasky (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) both sidelined on Wednesday due to injuries, head coach Carin Avery and the Crusader staff put together a game plan using libero Morganne Longoria (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) – by rule prohibited from setting overhand in front of the 10-foot line – as the squad's primary setter.

Last night's match against Oakland is on ESPN3, if you'd like to go back and watch to see how they won with Longoria as the "underhanded" setter from the libero spot.

Ah, right. I had a vague sense that the libero couldn't spike, but I'd forgotten they couldn't conventionally set either.

Thanks.

Longoria's at 15 assists. I guess that means we've got a libero setting again?

ESPN3 doesn't work for me in Canada - so I've still not seen this underhanded business.

Valpo fighting to defend the ARC, dropped the first two sets to Milwaukee, but picked up the third. Fourth is neck and neck. Tied at 12-12.

The "underhanded business" is merely a bump set.  Not unusual at all.

Unfortunately Milwaukee prevailed in 4.

I'm still figuring out this volleyball thing. But, is it at least rare as your primary means of setting?

You should drop by the ARC to see setting in person.

Likely I'll make it Friday, but I hope they have a healthy setter by then!

Perhaps but the Valpo Athletic site begs to differ!

Following a week in which she reached 2,000 career digs while also filling a role thought to be unprecedented in Division I volleyball, senior Morganne Longoria (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) has been named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week.
