It doesn't; Payton is a point guard, Len a center. The trade for Bridges hurts because he can probably play both forward positions. The guy they drafted and traded was a SF only.

Not sure about that. Ariza is more of a SF/SG. Anyone who can actually play defense alongside Alec is a benefit for him.

I'm not buying yet that the Ariza trade is bad news for Alec. I'd look for Phoenix to trade or release at least a couple of their expensive forwards (ie. Warren, Chriss, Bender, Williams, maybe even Jackson) in order to get the point guard they need. Alec's advantages are that he can play PF (Ariza, is at SF or SF/SG) and his salary would be the least expensive to support.

Technically, he is an unrestricted free agent, but it appears he would be added to the team if roster room and salary space open for him after trades. He could be signed to a minimum salary contract or possibly even another two-way contract. The free agent period begins today, and free agents can reach verbal agreements, but there is a moratorium period until July 6, which is when free agents can be signed. Alec might not know his future for a couple of weeks after the dust settles.

Interesting note that three Suns players at PF were omitted from the roster: Chriss, Warren, and Williams. As I mentioned previously, I expect at least two of them will be traded (most likely for a PG), making room for Alec if he performs well during the summer games.


By the way, the first game for Phoenix is Friday at 8:30 CT on ESPN against the Mavericks.

More interesting notes: Alec gave his #25 to the rookie Mikal Bridges and he will be wearing #14 instead. Also, another former VU recruiting target, Tai Odiase (UIC), will be on the team.

It wouldn't make sense for any of the 3 players listed to participate in the summer league. So I would not recommend reading into that.

What does "renounce free agent rights" mean?

Any team can sign him now, but he probably stays with the Suns, plays on their SL team. He might get another two way contract, but having this happen after SL rosters were set is crappy. But that's what happens when you happen to get drafted by a trash organization.

I understand why they did it, because they don't want to risk losing him to another team that may have had interested in AP. I seems like the Suns organization likes him as a depth option but it's crowded in that Suns locker room.

I mentioned a week ago that Phoenix would designate Alec as unrestricted free agent, since the free agent period was about to start. Phoenix also cleared others from their roster/salary cap space.  They needed space to sign Ariza, and they are trying to trade for a PG. But it appears Alec would be added to the team if roster room and salary space open for him after trades. Alec's advantage is that he could be signed to a minimum salary contract (or possibly even another two-way contract). There is a free-agent moratorium period until July 6, which is when free agents can be signed. Alec might not know his future for a couple of weeks after the dust settles. Nevertheless, if he does well in Summer League, Phoenix could re-sign him or, now that he is an unrestricted free agent, he could pick up interest from another team. Interestingly, a couple of higher-paid PF roster players for Phoenix were not included on the Summer League team and are likely to be traded: Warren and Chriss. This would open up room for Alec. Similar to Alec, Alan Williams, another PF, also was waived by the Suns but could now be re-signed by Phoenix at a lower salary. Again, if Alec performs well in the Summer League, I would be surprised to not see him on an NBA roster, most likely back on the Suns.
