With a 42-28 win over Capital U. this past weekend,Wittenberg is the 1st. Division III team to reach 700 wins. Overall,Wittenberg has a 700-347-32 lifetime record. Congratulations Tigers. Glad to see that there are some Lutheran affiliated schools that can play football. Great mascot too!

The "Tigers" have an excellent bball program. They made it to the 2nd. round of the NCAA's losing by 1 pt. to Marietta. Also, Gettysburg, another Lutheran school won the nat'l women's lacrosse championship. Now if Valpo played D111,perhaps we could win a nat'l championship or two. Why not?

Because it would be a step backward and not something we should do as a National Lutheran University.

First off, Gettysburg is hardly Lutheran.  search for a lutheran reference anywhere on their website.  Second, as FWalum has said, it is a huge step backward for a National University.  setshot should ask one of his non-Valpo buddies down there in SC about Augsburg, Wittenburg or St. Olaf and see what the reaction is.  Then mention Valpo.  The same recognition carries over to degree value.  There is little comparison.

Now, let's all pledge to ignor the rantings of our "D3" friend.

My parents did their undergrad at St. Olaf, before moving on the U of Minnesota for grad school.  Their claim to fame in regards to the Oles: some Choir concert that is televised nationally each year, and Betty White's character on Golden Girls supposedly went there  :)

What rantings of who? Our "D3" friend relates to many posters the same way Valpo relates to Wittenberg in sports. Wittenberg who? What huge upset in NCAA sports did Wittenberg pull off? Does anyone know where Wittenberg is located? Clue: it's not in Germany.

The University of Wittenberg that plays D-3 sports is in Ohio.

The Christmas Concert from St. Olaf College is shown on PBS stations around Christmas week, more on Christmas Eve, as I've seen in the past. It's the same style of concert as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and other larger music departments that do a huge Christmas program for the public/alums/prospective members.

Wow.  I mean, they have a chaplain, and the chaplain runs campus ministries.  So those pages mention Lutheranism.  But, yeah, not very prominent.

I found this page on the Gettysburg College website that talks about an organization called "Lutheran Student Movement" which could actually be on any campus except those with other official religious ties that don't agree with Lutherans like BYU.

The 2012 edition of US News Best Colleges lists Gettysburg as being affliated with the Lutheran Church. For those of you NOT in the know,Gettysburg is located in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. A Lutheran Theological Seminary is located near the college. Part the Civil War battle was fought on the grounds of both the college and the seminary. Heck, percentage wise, there are more Lutherans at Gettysburg than there are at Valpo. BOOK IT!

Yes, we all know where Gettysburg is located. All I'm sayign is that if they are so Lutheran, you'd think they would broadcast it more on their website.

Here is their STRONG statement about being Lutheran:

Spiritual life
Programs for students of all faiths coordinated through the Office of the Chaplain. Student religious organizations include Hillel, a Buddhist student organization, and a Newman Association for Catholic students. Historically, the College has been Lutheran affiliated.

Wow!  that is impressive!  As for the number of Lutheran students, you have to go through an entire registration process before they will tell you anything.  Very mysterious wouldn't you say?  Seeing as you know so much, maybe you could tell us how many Lutheran students there are at Gettysburg.

The problem is that it is Lutheran in the same way that Harvard is Puritan or Princeton Presbyterian. The seminary near is Lutheran but the college seems to be only vaguely associated with the church. Look at their faculty for what they call "religious studies". The chair is a Presbyterian pastor and all others lack even an undergrad degree from a Lutheran school.  Heck, one of the faculty, Carol Priest, is a "massage therapist"!!  Add to these facts that there are only seven total in this department say volumes about religion and its importance at Gettysburg.

I'm sure it is a fine school, I'm not arguing that. If you are seeking a Lutheran influence in any way, I'd look other places.

Here is the faculty site:
