Game #7 Marist

Marist was soundly beaten by Columbia today. The Lions are probably the best team in the Ivy this season. Marist beat Georgetown which beat Campbell at Barker Lane. That's kind of scary. Marist beat Stetson by 3 TDs although Stetson was in the game for most of 3 quarters. I'm not a big believer in the "well we hung with them for so many quarters" angle. They beat Stetson by 3 TDs in my view.

I'd guess a closer game than the recent few games vs. Marist and, maybe with a couple of significant bounces Valpo's way, a victory for the Crusaders.

Heavy load on Jimmy S's thigh. If it doesn't recover, Valpo will need to win in another fashion.

On a non Marist note: Dayton was looking like a potential victim until today when they beat Drake. Morehead State? Butler? May come down to those two for a win or two....maybe.

OK, what happened happened.  Chalk up another loss to a "scholarship" program, although I can't understand how they lost to G'Town.  Hopefully Jimmy's quad will heal in time for our next test.

This week they played Columbia and lost 41-17.  We have a tunnel into Columbia  (Former VU LB coach Justin Stovall) and we should get a really accurate reading about Marist strengths and weaknesses as a result. Columbia is undefeated (WHAT??) at 4-0 and have beaten Wagner, G'Town, Princeton and Marist.  Hopefully Justin will give us lots of good intelligence on Marist.

I'll ask 04 to delete my original slow post and this'll be the one for Marist.

While observing the massacre, I noticed Trey Belinski on the sidelines and didn't notice Joe Mullen on the sidelines. That doesn't mean Mullen wasn't there but I'm not sure the team travels with 4 QBs on flight games. With Seewald potentially nursing an injury for this upcoming week, the #3 QB becomes a bigger issue as he would be the backup if Seewald can't go.

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist football team wrapped up non-conference play with a 41-17 loss to Columbia of the Ivy League before 2,396 fans at Tenney Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Red Foxes now stand at 3-3 on the season, while Columbia improved to 4-0.

Key Plays

The Lions scored touchdowns on their first five offensive possessions of the game, and a 39-yard field goal by Oren Milstein gave them points on each of their offensive six drives in the first half. Columbia took a 38-0 lead to the locker room after the first 30 minutes.
Marist got on the board on its first drive of the second half that included a 50-yard rush by red-shirt junior quarterback Mike White and was capped off on a two-yard touchdown pass from red-shirt senior running back Marcellus Calhoun to red-shirt sophomore tight end Jon Kanda to bring the score to 38-7.
An interception by sophomore linebacker Maliek Carr on the ensuing Columbia possession gave the Red Foxes the ball on the Lions' 43-yard line. An eight-play, 27-yard drive ended with a 33-yard field goal by red-shirt junior Joe Giglio to make it 38-10 Columbia.
The Lions then extended their lead on a 39-yard field goal by Oren Milstein with 11:42 left in the game.
A forced fumble by red-shirt junior nose tackle Enmanuel Soriano was recovered by red-shirt junior linebacker Connor Kamczyc at the Columbia 42. A seven-play, 42-yard drive for Marist ensued, and ended with a three-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Areg Nazarian to make the score 41-17.

Key Stats

Columbia quarterback Anders Hill had five total touchdowns (three passing, two rushing). Hill completed 23 of 33 passes for 250 yards.
The Lions had 23 first downs to the Red Foxes' 12.
Columbia went 12-for-19 on third down while Marist went 4-for-14. The Lions entered the game ranked in the top 10 of the FCS in third-down percentage both offensively (eighth) and defensively (seventh).
The Lions ran 79 plays for 491 yards, and the Red Foxes ran 59 plays for 240 yards total.
Marist had 148 rushing yards on the day to Columbia's 141. White led the Red Foxes with 69 yards on the ground.

Game Notes

This is the first time Marist has hosted an Ivy League opponent in program history, and the third time the Red Foxes have faced Columbia. The Lions lead the all-time series, 3-0.
Calhoun's touchdown pass was on his first career pass attempt.
Kanda's touchdown catch was his second career score.
White's 50-yard run was the Red Foxes' longest of the season, and tied Marist's longest play from scrimmage this year.

After the first three games I would have said "absolutely!"  We have regressed during the last half of the Drake game, I'd call Homecoming a decent performance and certainly a regression v. Campbell.  My feeling is that it is more of what we have seen in the last couple of years where our lack of depth starts to show as injuries to key guys happen.  We are now playing some freshman which is where we have been for several years.  hopefully we get some guys back and march forward again.

I'm more talking about season to season. I'm not sure a couple of closer than expected results at the beginning of a season means much when the in league performance appears to be equal to what we saw last season.

This is a must win for Valpo against Marist to get to the 5 win goal that I predicted and that I expect. In year 4 of a rebuild, 5 wins is reasonable to ask. Cecchini is 11-28 in his fourth year at Valpo. It's significant better than Osteen, but it is still 11-28 which IMO does not meet expectations.
