Missouri State let go of Paul Lusk after 7 seasons and are currently searching for his replacement. It sounds like Evansville might be letting go of long time head and Evansville alum Marty Simmons. It should be a interesting offseason.

VU2014

I'd have to think Valpo assistant David Ragland would be on a list of candidates for Evansville. Coach Ragland has MVC experience on 2 separate teams and he's a Evansville native. He's well respected around the league and has been a successful assistant. Selfishly I hope Coach Ragland remains on Valpo's staff for another few years.

Coaching Changes is reporting that it's pretty much a done deal that Chris Hollender will be the next head coach of the Purple Aces.

The Evansville beat reporter brings up Greg Tonagel's name as a potential replacement for Marty Simmons. That would kind of sting to see an alumni become the head coach at a in-state Conference rival. There was apparently some hard feelings that Greg didn't even get a interview from the Athletics Department after Bryce left for Vandy. I forget where I heard it but Coach Lottich actually reached out to Greg to ask him to join staff as an assistant coach but he declined the offer. I have to figure Greg is going to get the opportunity to become a D1 head coach of a Low/Mid-Major somewhere or maybe get a offer to become an assistant at Power Conference school in the near future.

Tom Davis is a $#@%ing jack@$$. The guy literally couldn't help himself from taking a shot at VU. He couldn't just write a nice article about IWU and Greg's impressive accomplishments. SMH

Coach Ragland is named in the list of candidates being rumored for the Evansville job. The Evansville beat reporter says Coach Ragland is in the Top 3 most rumored for the job.

Looking at potential Evansville basketball coaching candidates

......

1. Calbert Cheaney
2. Michael Lewis
3. David Ragland
"You guessed it – more local flavor. Ragland also went to Harrison, where he was the conference's player of the year in 1999, and wrapped a solid college career at Southern Indiana.

Success has followed everywhere he's been. Ragland recently completed his second season as an assistant at Valparaiso, which is new to the MVC. He spent five years at junior-college power Vincennes and was its head coach from 2008-10. In four seasons on Greg Lansing's bench, he helped Indiana State to an NCAA and NIT appearance. He also had one-year pit stops with Bowling Green and upstart Northern Kentucky.

There is reason to believe Ragland will have considerable interest in the Aces' job. The feeling could be mutual given that the only two names linked to UE thus far have ties to the area, plus Ragland has experience in the Valley."

Other potential candidates
Walter McCarty...
Chris Hollender...
Chris Lowery...
Dane Fife...
Greg Tonagel has a fair share of advocates after recently winning his third NAIA championship in five years at Indiana Wesleyan. To some, it would be a reach. His proponents feel it would hurt his career progression if he didn't win at UE. Probably not a good match.
Scott Davenport...

It looks like one of Coach Ragland's brother is publicly lobbying for him to get the job so there is obviously interest in the job. He's a good coach so it wouldn't surprise me if we are in the market for another assistant coach this offseason.

There is a lot of smoke around Coach Rags name.

I hope that it works out for him, but if I am Evansville, I would want someone with D-1 head coaching experience at a lower level.

This certainly sounds like Coach Ragland is one of the front-runners.

While having no direct insight or information to back this up, I would suspect that Missouri State will go all out for David Padgett. Padgett went into a complete mess at Louisville and found a way to still be competitive in the ACC while maintaining dignity for himself and his players.

Apparently it isn't going to be Padgett.

Insider: New UE basketball coach Walter McCarty isn't done selling himself

The eight players exploring their options after last week's firing of Marty Simmons as head coach were already sold on Evansville the city and school. So, too, were the pair of high-school recruits who backed out of their signed National Letter of Intent.

But those 10 players were bought into the vision laid out by Simmons and his former coaching staff. They owe nothing to the university and new coach.

After being announced as the Purple Aces' next head coach Thursday morning, McCarty must now win back the players on the fence about returning. The only one from this past season who hasn't asked for their release is senior-to-be center Dainius Chatkevicius.

David Ragland, an assistant at Valparaiso, was said to have impressed this past week in the phone and in-person conversations with Spencer. With 14 years of college coaching experience, Ragland – a Harrison High graduate like McCarty – isn't likely to make a lateral move to UE. However, he might think twice about an offer as the top assistant to be groomed as the ready-in-waiting.

That would be a tough loss for Drake.  Moser is gone after this season at Loyola.  People can continue to tell me that I am wrong, but he is not going to have another year at Loyola like this one.  The big boys are coming for him...

Definitely a tough loss considering that they have 5 incoming freshman and Medved road a senior laden team (5th most experience team in the nation) to another job. They have a great recruiting class coming in but they might lose some of their top incoming recruits now.

Power conference teams are going to come calling but I think he sticks around for 1 more season. I don't think he's going to leave the midwest and no BIG 10 jobs sound like they'll be opening up and nor any midwest Big East jobs. If the DePaul job opens up this offseason then they'd be idiotic to not offer Porter Moser. I think he'd take the job too because he wouldn't have to move his family and he's Chicago guy. Also DePaul is technically a "Catholic" University which would make things more attractive for to Porter possibly.

It will be interesting to see if Loyola can work out an extension that could boost Porter's salary to $1 million per year to be equal with Jacobson at UNI. I doubt if Valpo was in the same position we'd be able to offer $1 million per season even with the MVC revenue streams coming in.

VU2014

That's a pretty big pay raise. It probably doubled his salary at Drake. The MWC has FBS football $ to pay out these contracts. The MWC TV contract clearly isn't as big as the P5's TV deals but it's still significant.

Per Jeff Goodman on twitter....

"Creighton assistant Darian DeVries is the frontrunner to land the Drake job, source told ESPN."

Not saying it wouldn't happen, but it would go against the history of how these things work for Moser to leave immediately. Look at all of the other mids that made the Final Four -- with the exception of Greg Marshall at Wichita, all the coaches eventually left for "bigger" opportunities, but it was a few years down the line. Loyola's in the process of backing up the Brinks truck to keep him, which is what typically happens in this situation, and coaches usually take that and wait a few years to field other offers, because they know they've got the best job security they will ever have while getting a seven-figure paycheck.

Heard that Chris Sparks will be on staff at UE.  Doesn't he have ties to Valpo?

Wow, good for Chris. Yes he played for Valpo 1997-2000 and was an assistant coach under Homer from 2007-11. He was actually the assistant that discovered Ryan Broekhoff. He's also Valparaiso Athletic's Hall of Famer because he was a freshman on the Sweet 16 team.

VU2014

I guess Coach Sparks isn't going to join the Evansville staff. Very bizarre.
