Just announced that Michael Joseph will fill this new position which will lead the charge in growing enrollment from 4100 to 6000 by 2015.

It seems that Valpo has more drawing power than I thought as this guy was the interim President of University of Detroit while they searched for a new President, and held the title of Executive Vice President (number 2 person) after the new President was selected.  Perhaps the new guy made it known that he wanted to bring in his own team, who knows.

So Valpo gets a guy with great credentials but a non-Lutheran to grow enrollment at a Lutheran University.  Hope it works.

Here is the announcement:

I look forward to this growth towards 6,000 students.  I can only imagine that this will help in meeting our financial goals brought up in the Master Plan.  Maybe it will even pack the ARC again on a game-by-game basis like we used to when I was in school!

How do you know this guy is not a Lutheran? I have no idea what his religion actually is but I don't think we should assume he isn't Lutheran. Coach Carlson was a Lutheran who worked at non-Lutheran schools. Actually President Heckler is also a Lutheran who worked at a public school before coming to Valpo. I don't think you can make the assumption he's not Lutheran although since Mr. Joseph's religious background is not mentioned you are most likely correct.

Wow.  A 46% increase in students over 3+ years, or four years if you assume the incoming fall class of 2015, not calendar year 2015.  I'm sure the non-traditional student (commuting, night school, part-time) will be a large factor in this equation.

This says he's a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Plymouth, MI.

I guess that means he will fit in well with the 25% catholic student population Valpo already has and will need to grow most likely to make the 6,000 enrollment number.

You may be correct but we need a concerted effort to maintain our Lutheran student numbers also if we are to maintain our position as the preeminent Lutheran University in the country.

I agree it is disappointing that it was not a Lutheran. But I still think the most important skill required is to actually grow the student enrollment to 6,000 and not just say the "right" things about growing Lutheran enrollment. We will see if Mr. Joseph can get the task done. He'll be under some great pressure as this goal has been publicly announced.

According to Heckler, Valpo shouldn't be a university for Lutherans but a Lutheran university. Unfortunately, I take that to mean that the percentage of Lutherans at Valpo will be dropping.

The reality is that the number of Lutheran students is dropping significantly, which will impact the percentage of Lutherans at all Lutheran schools.  I agree with President Heckler yet endorse the idea of maintaining the significant Lutheran enrollment percentage.

I wonder how many students are Catholic at Notre Dame?

As for the new VP, I could care less if he is a Muslim as long as he brings Lutheran students to Valpo!

According to the Notre Dame wikipedia website:
While religious affiliation is not a criterion for admission, approximately 80% of undergraduates enrolled self-identify as Catholic. There is no compulsory participation in any religious liturgies. Students and clubs of other religions and Christian denominations are welcomed and supported.

International students have been discussed more than commuters, part-time, etc.  The number of Chinese students has certainly grown enormously in the last 11 years, since I graduated, and indeed even in the last six years, since I was here last.  A nice addition to the campus, for sure!
