2018 Roster came out today

Only two players not returning from spring

Deuce Larose
Cole VanSetters

Larose a traveling receiver last year, played in 10 games, haven't had the best retention at that position the past two classes

Christian Campbell and Isaac Lane both received redshirts giving extra year of eligibility

JD24

It never fails. The one position which appears a bit shaky gets hit with either a significant injury or a DNR. Was counting on him to replace Catrine.

valpofb16

Also of note Nathan Orlandini is listed as a RSFR. as opposed to a SO., he did not play after game five wondering if he qualified

Edit: Deuce Larose still on team just left off of roster, human error

Sort of like when Broekhoff's Russian team, Loko Kuban, accidentally left his name off the playoff roster and the league office said "Sorry, Rowdy, no play."

Valpo could be in for another strong year. Lots of returning starters!

Always nice to be mentioned.....do we really have 18 starters back?
Morgan
Catrine
Riley/Scargle
Nuness
Sloane
De la Rosa

seems like we have 16

Starters lost:

RB Morgan (9/9)
WR Catrine (11/11)
NT De La Rosa (6/9)
DE Slone (10/11)
SS Nunes (10/10)
CB Scargle (7/11)

Role Players Lost

WR Navarro (2/11)
TE Clarke (0/11)
TE Petruff (0/11)
ILB Pfizenmayer (0/10)
ILB Regan (0/8)
CB Riley (2/2)

JD24

No matter whether Navarro started or not, I think role player completely diminishes his production. He was the leading receiver in terms of both catches and yardage last year.

Position Preview: QB

Who Played last season:
#9 Jimmy Seewald SO. (11/11)
#14 Chris Duncan RSFR. (0/10)
#4 Joe Mullen RSSO. (0/1)
#11 Trey Bilinski FR. (RS)   #13 Ryan Markoff FR. (RS)

Last year our offense played three quarterback's. Seewald was a returning starter and only improved as a sophomore. Duncan had a great Montana game and was brought in for several rushing packages. Mullen played in a TIU blowout and was essentially a walk on. The staff redshirted Bilinski and Markoff.

The entire group returns but also adds in incoming freshman Nimz. Seewald missed spring (shoulder surgery) but has been throwing over summer should be ready for year 3 as the starter. Duncan was treated as the number 1 QB in spring and figures to be solidified as the back up. I have heard Bilinski is the solid #3. Markoff I imagine will be moved to receiver full time at least this season as WR depth is concerning. Mullen figures to be the odd man out among returners  . With only 3 QB's having played last year it looks like this will be a learning year for Nimz.

Depth Chart Prediction
1. #9 Jimmy Seewald JR. 6-5 220
2. #14 Chris Duncan RSSO. 6-4 190
3. #11 Trey Bilinski RSFR. 6-2 215
4. #13 Ryan Markoff RSFR. 6-2 190 (WR) or #4 Joe Mullen RSJR. 6-4 215
5. #5 Ben Nimz FR. 6-3 185

Great PFL preview, gives staff kudos
Shuffled through the podcast pretty quickly and heard some relevant Valpo talk at 15:00 and 49:57, there might be more but I think these were the main ones.
My current favorite podcast: The Glenn Loury Show https://bloggingheads.tv/programs/glenn-show

They picked the top two teams to be Valpo and San Diego.  Really hoping they are right.

One thing though, and don't know if this is true for all of the Pioneer League, is that they mentioned that non-scholarship D1 basically draws players that are mostly local or near local players.  That is not the case for Valpo.  The roster shows 11 players from Florida and 6 from California.  Also, the current roster shows players from 15 different states.
Season Results: CBI/CIT: 2008, 2011, 2014  NIT: 2003,2012, 2016(Championship Game) 2017   NCAA: 1962,1966,1967,1969,1973,1996,1997,1998 (Sweet Sixteen),1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2013 and 2015

Running back

#10 Jarrett Morgan SR. (9/9)
#44 Kyle Cartales SO. (2/11)
#32 Cody Boxrucker SO. (0/10)
#21 Elias Earley RSSO. (0/10)

#15 Doug Haugh FR. (RS)

One of the few areas the team sees a loss is at running back. Morgan was the primary starter in '16+'17. From what I've heard Cartales will get the lion share of touches. He split carries last year with Morgan essentially, he will be featured heavily. Boxrucker will return as the goaline and short yardage back. Earley will probably get a few more carries. Expect Haugh to compete for the starting long snapper duty. He should see touches but is more of a short yardage back. Raupach is the most relating freshman to Morgan, he could have a role. Riley Allison is essentially the third short yardage back and Maceo will be converting from QB.

Early Depth Chart
1. #44 Kyle Cartales JR. 6-1 220
2. #32 Cody Boxrucker JR. 6-0 200
3. #21 Elias Earley RSFR. 5-6 175

4. #15 Doug Haugh RSFR. 6-1 205 or #20 Cameron Raupach FR. 5-10 175
5. #25 Riley Allison FR. 5-11 205 or #26 Anthony Maceo FR. 5-9 180

JD24

Cartales surprised me last year. He doesn't appear to be fast but he gets where he's going pretty quickly. He also is good out of the backfield receiving. If he were to go down, it could get interesting and not necessarily in a positive way.

I look at the OL as a major strength this season which should help no matter who is running the ball.

LB Nick Turner and OL Tom Schofield preseason all-conference!

Bailey Gessinger as a Returner as well!

Also FWIW #7 DB Brent Brimmage will be transferring to Ball State as a Walk-On

Here's the breakdown by team:

Dayton - 3O / 2D / 2 St = TOT 7
USD - 3O / 1D / 0 ST = TOT 4
Butler - 3O / 0D / 1St = TOT 4
Marist - 1O / 3D / 0St = TOT 4
Drake - 2O / 2D / 0St = TOT 4
Valpo - 1O / 1D* / 1St = TOT 3
JU - 0O / 2D / 0St = TOT 2
Morehead - 1) / oD / 0St = TOT 1
Davisson - 1O / 0D / 0St = TOT 1
Stateson 0O / 1D / 0St = TOT 1

* Here is the LB writeup. Note how Nick blows everyone's stats out of the water, but is not considered the "leading" LB.

Marist's Willie Barrett – a First-Team All-PFL honoree last season – returns to lead the PFL's linebackers corps after a 53-tackle campaign that saw him post 9.5 tackles for loss. Jacksonville's Trevor Tufano (63 tackles, 4.5 TFL) and Caysaun Wakeley (70 tackles, 7.5 TFL) also return as does Valparaiso's Nick Turner (101 tackles, 8.0 TFL).

C'mon man. A little added motivation, Nick?

Tight End/ Full Back

Last Season:

Tight End
#84 Mason Sutter JR. (11/11)
#16 Ryan Clarke SR. (0/11)
#87 Martin Petruff SO. (0/11)
#31 Alex Kluck FR. (RS)   #80 Brett Bittner FR. (RS)

Full Back:
#40 Brannen Martin RSFR. (0/9)

Tight End:
One of the more interesting positions on the team due to attrition. Sutter comes back with 32 career starts, no need to worry about position there. Clarke graduates and was an excellent teammate by all accounts. He will be missed as the long snapper, double set tight end, and on special teams. Petruff was supposed to take a larger role this year but left the team before spring. This leaves two RSFR maybe three battling for their roles. Kluck is a coach favorite and was scout OPOY, expect him to be featured heavily. Bittner is thin but is expected to fill Petruff's role from last season. Spencer Locke was also on team but reviewing film and in spring projected more as a FB. Allton played primarily wide receiver last season for his high school team so expect a transition year.

Full Back:
Martin is the only full back on the roster. Heavy special teams player, featured in heavier offensive sets. Locke could fill in here if Martin were to get hurt but expect Martin taking almost all of the reps.

Early 2018 Depth Chart

Tight End
1. #84 Mason Sutter 6-5 240 SR.
2. #31 Alex Kluck  6-5 220 RSFR.
3. #80 Brett Bittner 6-5 205 RSFR.
4. #82 Tanner Allton 6-5 190 FR.

Full Back
1. #40 Brannen Martin 6-1 230 RSSO.
2. #45 Spencer Locke 6-2 220 RSFR.

Jarnagin should have been on there as well.

I really hope the transfer reason is one that is other than football as it makes little sense from the sport perspective

I hope Tanner's parents invested in a double training table along with the meal plan. Go forth and eat young man!

http://www.valpoathletics.com/football/news/2018-19/18319/fall-camp-set-to-commence-for-valpo-football/

Somewhat scary note:

QuoteOn offense, the Crusaders will not rush quarterback Jimmy Seewald (Livonia, Mich. / Divine Child) early in fall camp as he completes his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery. That opens the door for Chris Duncan (Woodland Hills, Calif. / Woodland Hills-Taft) to see substantial snaps as he attempt to fend off Trey Bilinski (Nappanee, Ind. / Northwood), Joe Mullen (Elgin, Ill. / St. Edward's [Tiffin]) and Ben Nimz (Waukesha, Wis. / Catholic Memorial) for the No. 2 quarterback role.

With a WR group that seems to be a bit light and maybe the same regarding TE....interesting that these groups were not mentioned in the article....a QB who's coming off wing repair and still at some stage of recovery....a season can get thrown awry pretty quickly. Ask Dayton about that.

I'm going on Under The Radar Sports Talk in a few minutes with Bill Koch to talk Valpo football. It's on WVLP 103.1FM, wvlp.org, TuneIn radio app, or the WVLP Facebook page for live video. Give it a watch or listen.

Update: Only got about 30 seconds because they covered a lot with the major conferences, and time ran away from us. I'll let you guys know a better time next week for when I'll be on, around the NFL AFC Conference Preview talk. Getting excited for this season!!
