GAME #3 - Valpo vs. Truman State 9/22 - 1:00pm CST

We hung in with YSU for a half. As posters pointed out, with YSU's superior scholarship depth and size, Valpo just wore out. Hope Chris is ok. Agree with JD24 that we will be okay in the trenches once we get to the PFL part of the schedule where depth, size and skill be be more even.

TSU will give us a bit of a measure in that regard after us facing two FCS scholly programs. Truman is D-II, but remember, they give scholarships at that level, and I can remember Carlson and Adams before him lamenting that it was tough to win against those odds. Well, not anymore. We put that in the rear view mirror at William Jewel years ago. This year's team has now experienced the adversity under fire necessary to focus going forward. I am looking for at least 3 TD margin in Valpo's favor. The guys in the trenches on both sides of the ball will deliver that no matter who starts at QB.

I intend to witness our first 2018 win in person.

Saginaw Valley 21 - Truman State 20. TSU (0-3) lost it in the 4th on a go-ahed TD by SVSU. Box score showed that SVSU led in pretty much all major categories, but they did not really dominate any one category except for 4th down conversions. TSU could only manage 90 yards on the ground and their QB got 51 of those (one of his carries was 31 yards).

There's a lot of non Div I scholarship programs which Valpo would not only beat but beat handily. Truman State has played 3 teams I think Valpo would whip pretty easily....as would possibly all PFL teams....and if Valpo doesn't do the same to Truman, it won't be a good sign.

TSU was a preseason coaches pick at #4 in the GLVC. Indianapolis was #1 and McKendry and Missouri S&T were tied for 2nd. By way of comparison: Drake beat Missouri S&T last weekend 52-12. The Drake QB threw 6 TDs and piled up 452 yards on 22 of 27 attempts. Incidentally, Drake ran for a net of 13 yards on 35 rushes.

MST beat Truman last season fairly handily (two scores) while Truman beat McKendree for whatever that is worth. On paper I can't see Truman being all that competitive with Valpo.

Margin should be at least 3 TDs don'tcha think? Especially when you factor in the Valpo passing attack even if a 'rusty' Seewald starts.

I also went into some Drake detail that I ordinarily wouldn't do for our back pocket when they come to town 10/27.

BREAKING: QB depth lists either Jimmy "or" Trey Bilinsky. No mention of Chris. Concussion protocol??? Also looks like Boxrucker is being held out (again).

Duncan went into Saturday's game with an injured knee and aggravated it in the 4th quarter. In addition to Boxrucker not being on the 2 deep and injured, Larose is not listed on the two deep. He, frankly, hasn't shown much thus far although he could be hurt. He took a shot in the 4th quarter.

If Valpo's down QB1 and QB2 our expectations probably need to be adjusted accordingly.

Here's the video preview. Dave seems to position TSU as more snake-bit than weak. Took SVSU converting 5 4th and shorts in a row to score two TDs to come from behind and win. He is still mentioning Jimmy as "we'll see." Said nice things about Bilinsky and mentioned the need to run the ball better. The one clip that was shown during the interview was of Norberg's catch and run. After the catch, he literally outran the YSU DBs and was gaining space with every stride. Pretty impressive.

Part of Dave's job is to pump up the opposition prior to the game publicly. Drake just drubbed a team from the same conference and that team is considered better than Truman. TSU and SVSU were pretty even last season and the game they played last week reflected similar comparison this season. A Valpo romp should be expected which, of course, Dave can't say. So I wouldn't take what he's saying about TSU very seriously. Last year it was all about the fear of the triple option vs Trinity Baptist which was unfounded.

Playing with a 3rd string QB, if that ends up being the case, could change things but I would expect Valpo should be able to run the ball well enough and play defense well enough to make it a lower scoring non-competitive game. Further to that, if they can't then we and they have no business even discussing being competitive in all of their PFL games during this year's conference schedule.

This is very sad and disheartening. Just as excitement and optimism were beginning to build for the program. Hopefully the program is able to gather itself move on from this and recapture the momentum it had before this game.
