Marist is 4-1 after beating Morehead. They've discovered a freshman QB who is putting up good numbers and have a WR who is getting NFL scouting attention.

I assume Cam Kelly will get the Christian assignment. Kelly's had his moments in which he's played really well but this guy is a different animal all together.

Can't see man coverage against this guy.  Cover 2?

My guess is that what playing pure zone vs. man will do is make it take longer to get down the field. I'd guess they'll give whoever the victim is for Valpo some over the top help....Cover 2 Man under. Could also go with a matchup zone but that's prone to major breakdowns even in the Pros since it's fairly advanced.

Marist stats of interest in their win at Morehead 48-21 on Saturday

PASSING:
Austin Day 11/21 144 yds 2 TDs and 1 INT

RECEIVING:
Anthony Olivencia 8 - 53 yds
Juston Christian 3 - 43 yds 1TD

RUSHING:
Mekhal Johnson - 17 for 171 yds 3 TDs
Darryn Jordan - 15 for 113 yds

It appears that if you try to take away their passing attack, which it looks like that was what Morehead tried to do based on Christian only getting 3 catches and 43 yards, then Marist runs at you with two decent backs.  Marist is definitely not a one trick pony.

JD24

Marist blocked a punt for a TD and had an 81 yard run for a TD which cut down on passing attempts as they just ran the ball after a certain point and the starters were out in the 4th quarter. However, they did demonstrate that they can run the ball.

VULB#62

And we have demonstrated that we have a hard time stopping any run attack. And that is a annual issue.

JD24

Looks like maybe a rainy 50 degree day in Poughkeepsie this weekend.

I've never been to a game at Marist when it wasn't  ;D

From The Valpo Marist Preview Release:

Marist allows 28.1 points per game, tied for second in the league in scoring defense. The star player for the Red Foxes is wide receiver Juston Christian, who ranks third in the league at 115 receiving yards per game. Quarterback Austin Day is averaging 245 passing yards per game and has thrown nine touchdown passes in his three appearances. The team's running backs thrived in last week's win over Morehead State as Mekhai Johnson ran for 170 yards and Darryn Jordan accumulated 101 yards on the ground. Marist head coach Jim Parady is in his 27th season. Marist was picked to finish seventh in the PFL Preseason poll, but has exceeded expectations as one of four PFL teams with only one league loss. The only defeat came by five points at Stetson in the first week of league play against a Hatter team that has also been a surprise – currently tied for second after being picked ninth.

Spotted on the 2-Deep:

QBs - Duncan and Markoff

RBs - Boxrucker and Earley

Punter - Just Ulbrich (Alex has been home the past two weeks due the stroke his dad suffered).

ILBs - Messler is ahead of Skarecky

JD24

Looking forward to the 27-17 Valpo victory.

JD24

Valpo catching a break as Marist's QB who's been lighting it up is not starting apparently due to violating team rules suspension. Don't know if he's out for the game or not. QB from last year and early in the season is playing for Marist and he's nowhere near the player Austin Day is.

Mystery of what I thought was an injury having Boxrucker out last week was actually a suspension for violating team rules.

JD24

....and Juston Christian makes his first appearance on video. Unfortunately he was standing in the endzone with the ball when spotted.

JD24

Valpo defense again allows a last minute end of half/game TD.

JD24

...and why not just hand them another 7.

Looks like our coaches are still going with the throw three incomplete passes with less than two minutes in the half plays to give the ball back to the other team that has worked so well.  Valpo has yet to stop any team from scoring when they get the ball with any time left right before the half, but our coaches insist on handing it back to them with just under or above 2 minutes, every single game!  Often, as has happened again, it leads to 2 scores.

usc4valpo

Wow, Marist looks like they have a beautiful football facility!

JD24

A WR with 3 or 4 catches gets into it with the opposition sideline on an incomplete pass and gets calles for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on 3rd down followed by a punt with a 30 mph wind behind him shanking a punt.

The WR should sit for the rest of the game and the team needs a punter. ST play has been abysmal all season. A couple of kick returns doesn't offset that.

Fortunately Marist out inepts Valpo and Snouffer picks up a fumble and runs it in.

JD24

We get a pick deep in Valpo territory and Cam Kelly gets nailed for unsportsmanlike penalty. Coaches need to get to these guys because there's been too many of them this season.

JD24

As the two teams attempt to out inept each other, Valpo recovers a fumble when the QB dropped the snap

JD24

Valpo goes for it on 4th down at their own 35 and runs the ball which they haven't been able to do all game. To keep up with the rest of the team, Lundberg picks up yet another unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for the Crusaders.

JD24

Marist and Valparaiso...setting back Football play one down at a time.

Deets

Our offensive play calling sucks and really doesn't give our offense a chance.  Running up the middle never works.  Running to the right usually results in a positive gain.  But do  we always have to throw bombs instead of just getting a first down?
