Quote from: valpofb16 on January 29, 2019, 08:30:43 AMCommit: Akil Mitchell Whitney Young Chicago, Ill 5-11 170. Other Offers: Carleton, Oberlin, Rose-Hulman DB Donovan Earles OL Stone Dixon- Furman (PWO), Rose-Hulman. Dayton. RPI, Oberlin, Case Western University. Carnegie Mellon, Morehead St. OL Joe Monahan- Culver Stockton, Grand View, Olivet Nazarene, Butler OL Drew Parrish LB Sean Curry QB Ashton Ruszkowski- Butler RB Andrew Engle- Cincinnati Christian, Concordia Ann Arbour RB Jordan Curtis WR Akil Mitchell -Carleton, Oberlin, Rose-Hulman
Akil Mitchell appears to be a RB or, at least, his highlights present him as such.

Can't hurt to have Javon Freeman, his classmate from Whitney Young, at Valpo already.

Miran posted a receiver committed, I have also heard that he was recruited as one, We have a good amount of RB's on roster heading into next season

44   Kyle Cartales   RB   6'1   205   SR.
32   Cody Boxrucker   RB   6'0   215   SR.
15   Doug Haugh   RB   6'1   205   R-SO.
26   Anthony Maceo   RB   5'9   170   R-FR.
25   Riley Allison   RB   5'10   205   R-FR.
20   Cam Raupach   RB   5'10   175   R-FR.
Jordan Curtis   RB   6'0   180   FR.
Andrew Engle   RB   5'10   190   FR.

With Jimmy's health in question, our o-line personnel, and a stable of backs I am thinking run game could be 60-40 next season

JD24

I don't see that recruit as a WR. Some make sense because of the way they play the game such as Catrine and (I think) Kuramata played RB in HS at least to a point. They played the game more upright. This guy does everything as a RB...iow....low.

I don't disagree with the RB thought. QB issues. Bigger WR issues. Should have run a lot more last season.

upside is he was a productive slot receiver.

downside is that he's listed at 5'5".

But, he appears to have breakaway speed.  I wonder if Ollie Reese had anything to do with his recruitment as they are from the same area of Tennessee.

I like the commitment to more local kids, I've heard as of this second there are 81 kids in for spring, looks like there are 19 spots left (110) before camp, 29 spots open overall, cannot tell you the last time Valpo had only a recruiting class in the 20's

It's tough to play WR at 5'5" for a couple of reasons.  Doesn't mean it can't be done but dismissing it as a major obstacle (which I'm not saying your doing) would be a mistake.  Kick and PR after Gessinger leaves. Maybe even if Gessinger is used more from LOS as a slot although I don't see him holding up over the full season playing full time at his size.

It seems like the quality of recruits is definitely picking up.  Some of these offers were from scholarship teams, like Minnesota Duluth (D2) and others.  Presume these kids are good to very good students and able to garner enough academic scholarships to be able and willing to play for us.  Looks very exciting!

One of the things Coach has done will is change the style of recruit so be one that can both play on the team BUT also be successful at the university. This helps in lots of ways, both in regards to the attitude and retention of the recruit and in elevating the culture of the program. A student looking to continue their football career but also having their eyes on academics is that type that brings value to the university both on and off the field.

valpofb16

Agreed Horne was really good at this,

Adams struggled, leaving Carlson with quite the attrition issue. Dave hasn't had too much attrition relatively over the first few seasons. Next season will be a rebuilding one but the types of high schools they are recruiting has changed as well.

Carlson often went to smaller high schools and tried to get the top kids on those teams, Cecchini is going after solid contributors who played high level competition. (Note this is a blanket statement, I understand there are exceptions on both sides)

Why would you think next year is a rebuilding year?  With the players coming back and good luck health wise, I would think the expectation would be for a winning record, particularly if Seewald is healthy or Duncan continues to improve.  The good news about last year was that a lot of young guys got a lot of playing time under their belts.
