Quote from: VALPO LI on February 15, 2020, 09:00:31 PMCan't wait to hear Vance and Bakers take on Valpo's wins against their Persian Hounds and Birds of red. ;)
I actually enjoy them. They give props to good play and credit to teams other than their own. Actually, sometimes they're harder on their own

I agree with this.  The hosts are open and honest about their allegiances, but also give credit to other teams.  They covered the SIU loss on the previous episode.  I think their take was a little bit more of "SIU played terribly" rather than "Valpo played great".  Was probably a little of both.

In any event, I'm appreciative that they do the show, and hope they continue.  And I will look forward to hear how they address the Valpo comeback.

Let's face it without SIU shooting and playing so horribly there is no way Valpo wins so easily because, again, Valpo did not play at their best and, more importantly, to their fullest potential.
Sorry, Valpo's defense was intense that night and SIU's offensive issues were a product of it. They were blocking shots, disrupting the flow, and forcing SIU into shooting more than half of their attempts from the perimeter (and you know how well that usually works out).

Thank you all for the feedback and listening, love the conversation.  I think both of us, who are 100% not apologetic about our allegiances, try to be tough on our teams too, maybe even too hard to compensate when we get excited.  Always love the feedback, hope to see you all in St. Louis!

This directed to the podcast hosts.

I enjoy the podcast and really appreciate the enthusiasm for the league that you bring to the show.  Helps us rally around the league as a whole, rather than just our own teams.  I think that pride in the league as a whole was missing for Valpo in the Horizon League.

VUBBFan

On their latest podcast, they give a lot of time and attention to Valpo. They give credit to Valpo on exceeding their and the rest of the Valley's projections for this season's program. There's also a good conversation on the final game for each team and the consequences it has on ARCH MADNESS seeding. Well worth a listen.

Found it very interesting that they, looking at things from an outside perspective, think that the way Coach Lottich has handled the offseason issues and then the Fazekas injury should at least put him in the conversation for COY. Obviously a very different perspective than many on this forum.

Baker and Vance have an aplaudable season ending episode with Paul Oren as a guest .  Paul jumps on the show and has a great dialogue with Baker and Vance about Valpo to the CIT, John Kiser, Valpo entering the MVC, facilities, Arch Madness, future realignment in the Valley, conference challenges, scheduling and Bryce Drew to GCU.

You can fast forward through the first 45 minutes of "banter" ;) as Baker and Vance put it but a real great show by all 3.

Paul, I loved your interview in this podcast. It was fantastic and made me feel very hopeful for the future of Valpo and the MVC in general. Sounds like the league is starting to get a bit more aggressive in trying to continue to improve itself. I'm very excited. I want to pick your brain about a few (perhaps lower tier in relation to most of the others mentioned) expansion options for the MVC. If We're looking at NKU doesn't it also make sense to look about an hour or so north to Wright State? They are the other power in the HL and would create a ready rivalry between NKU and Wright State that already exists as well as giving Valpo fans an interesting and familiar opponent which might help draw them to games. (That said, I feel like fans came to the Wright State games because they mattered in the conference race and that was their primary reason for coming not because of Wright State itself. Still, there is a history there that we can't ignore. No offense, but if we're going to gamble on an HL team taking the next big leap, I would take Wright State well before I would even look in Milwaukee's direction; even though Milwaukee can and would be a good program if they ever stabilized things on the administrative level and found the right coach.)Wright State may lack the major city location and they are second to Dayton in that city; furthermore, they haven't been as successful as NKU. In spite of that, they still have beautiful facilities and draw similar numbers to NKU in addition to being really good at other sports that matter to the Valley like baseball. Ditto for the Dakotas (NDSU and SDSU). NDSU has been pretty good at baseball and softball and just won the SL tournament. SDSU is their partner in dominating the SL and often brings a lot to women's hoops as well. In addition to bringing the MVFC more under direct MVC control which might help stabilize the conference even more. What do you think about these three schools?

Here's how I rank our expansion options:

1A. SLU

1B. Murray State

1C. Belmont (I'm starting to think they might be willing to come to the MVC now that Rick Byrd is gone. I think he was the #1 anti MVC voice at Belmont because he didn't want to adjust to a new conference so late in his career.)

2. NKU

3. Wright State (would only be added to round out to an even number in my mind because they haven't taken the next step yet)

4A. SDSU

4B. NDSU

5. Milwaukee

6. UIC

7. Oral Roberts

8. USD

9. Omaha

10. UMKC

(Anyone below #4B I really don't want unless they show something over a period of years. 1A-4B I would be varying degrees of thrilled to not upset if we added them now.

Found their latest episode pretty interesting. Baker and Vance talk pre-season rankings and awards. They are then joined by Jim Root from three-man-weave.com to discuss his MVC Preview. They talk a fair amount about Valpo and some of the difficulties of predicting where they might be ranked and then pretty predictably have us slotted at 8th and 9th understandably based on the lose of JFL, Ryan and John. Perhaps most interesting was the guy from three-man-weave.com picking Dalton Banks, a Salukis freshman from  Eau Claire, WI as the preseason freshman of the year.  Mr. Root is from Wisconsin and seems to be a fan of all things Wisconsin but relegated Jacob Ognacevic to helping fill the outside shooting role left open by the departure of Ryan. He talked about watching a lot of video of Dalton Banks but seemed ignorant of Ognacevic despite the fact that Jacob seems to have a better resume, other than the fact that he played in the small school division.

Dalton Banks
Two-time first-team All-State selection. Named All-Northwest boys basketball player of the year. Two-time conference player of the year. Three-time All-City honoree. Averaged 24.7 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game as a senior and led Eau Claire North to the regional championship. Eau Claire North's all-time leading scorer, setting the record in his junior year.

Jacob Ognacevic
Named to The Associated Press All-State First Team following his senior season at Sheboygan Lutheran in 2019-20 while also earning Herald Times Player of the Year, All-Big East Conference Player of the Year and Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-State First-Team status... Was a finalist for Wisconsin Mr. Basketball. Became the 38th player in the history of Wisconsin high school basketball to accumulate 2,000 career points. Led the state in scoring at 39.4 points per game as a senior and finished his prep career with 2,501 points, sixth in the history of the state of Wisconsin. Averaged 16 rebounds per game during his senior season. Became just the third player in the history of Wisconsin High School basketball to score more than 1,000 points in a single season, finishing his senior year with 1,024 and would have likely set the state's single-season record if it weren't for the COVID-19 shutdown. Shattered the Sheboygan Lutheran scoring record that was previously held by Sam Dekker, who played in the NBA from 2015-2019.

Has anyone ever heard of an Indiana HS I-A player averaging 40 PPG? I know I haven't. When was the last time an IN 1-A player was a finalist for Mr. Basketball? What Jacob did was an amazing accomplishment, regardless of the level of competition. Obviously, he is making a bigger leap than most, and it may take a season before he's ready to contribute, but that's ok. I have a good feeling about him.

I had mentioned this in a post months ago, but I talked with a neighbor who is a high school coach in Wisconsin (in a larger school division) about Jacob. He said that he was surprised that Jacob did not draw attention from bigger schools (Wisconsin, Minnesota) as he felt Jacob has the right size and all the skills necessary to play at the highest level (obvious comparisons to Sam Dekker, who played at the same high school).

I think Paul and Redbird fans have developed a lot of mutual liking for one another. I do like the camaraderie of this conference. It feels like we all know we're together with other great programs so there's a lot of mutual respect even though the rivalries can be pretty fierce. It's really nice.

Dugger, I believe, was one of the teams used in the movie "Hoosiers" at least one of the teams on the scoreboard.
