Some thoughts on his 7th place ranking for Valpo--and oh, by the way, The Beacons is unique or would you rather be a Rambler (?) a Tree or a Bulldog? (Now there is a real  unique one!)
Not sure why he said Kithier had a "rough run" at Michigan State.  He started 14 games last season and Tom Izzo said he was starting because "he never makes mistakes". I'm pretty sure Kobe King started every game he played at Wisconsin. Any Valley schools able to say the same? Not much mention of our adding Oklahoma's Mr. Basketball or having three Mr. Basketballs on the roster--and a Wisconsin Associated Press First Team selection who is a WALK-ON!!!  Can any other Valley team say that?
The biggest thing will be Valpo's improvement in shooting. Anderson replaces Sackey, Taylor replaces Clay, etc.  Those two guys shot 20% or worse from the 3.  We have added a BUNCH of good shooters which will no doubt open things up for Krikke and Kithier.  expect Ben to be much improved.

Finally, in spite of our limited talent last year, we split with four of the six teams ranked above us.  We have added more talent than any Valley team. Three BIG transfers, one additional Mr. Basketball and one of the top D2 players in the country.  Should be a fun year!

If you want to learn more about the other 9 teams, it's worth a listen. If you want to hear anything about Valpo, don't waste your time. We were the only team that didn't receive a mention during the preview segment.

Thank you for listening, and don't worry, I'm 3 episodes from now, we will do a full Valpo preview.

I don't think most Valley fans (MarchArchPod included) have written off our new talent. What they have written off is the coaching and or leadership ability of Matt Lottich. This could change quickly if he and they can win.

I don't get it. Yes, I know that I am biased, but how does the team that brings in 4 B1G players, one of the best players in Div II, and the best recruiting class according to Verbal Commits get virtually no mention in this podcast. Indiana State is the most intriguing team?? Ok, they have a new coach who has a great reputation in DII and is going to try to play uptempo along with 3 DII transfers and some decent new recruits. How does that compare to the almost complete retool of Valpo's roster? There are a thousand questions about Valpo's team, here are just a few main ones:  Will Kobe King play well with others? Can Joe Hedstrom ever reach pre knee injury expectations. Does Kevion Taylor's game translate well from DII to DI? Can the talented freshman class (most of whom probably expected to getting significant minutes) adjust to playing behind the more experienced transfers? where do Sheldon Edwards and Connor Barrett fit into the mix behind the transfers?  How long, if at all, will it take for this team to gel? Other than Krikke, Valpo will have upgrades at every position. I think, as a former college assistant coach, that Valpo has the widest range of potential outcomes of any team in the valley depending upon the answers to these and many other questions.

MarchArchPod, you could have at least mentioned that Valpo had a lot of changing parts, as do many other schools, but maybe not as many changing parts as Valpo, and mentioned the great potential and if you do have suspect thoughts of Lottich and the coaching staff then mention it. But to leave out Valpo is very condesending in my view and says "Valpo isn't worth mentioning" to all it's fans. Our fans know that you can never count Valpo MBB out of any game. You should have known this by now.

If the podcast couldn't even be bothered to mention Valpo (I didn't listen as I am insulted), then stop posting about it here.  That is just disrespectful and poor reporting.  If it is a MVC podcast, all teams should be analyzed.  Leaving one team off, you just lost all credibility with this basketball fan.

When asked about the MCV being a guard-centric league the guest, Jordan Majeskey at about 48:25 of the podcast, stated that Valpo was bringing in high major guards and wings. That pretty much sums up the Valpo analysis for this podcast. In all fairness they will be reviewing each team in later podcasts. I don't think that they intentionally snub Valpo, I just think that they are more familiar with the established teams in the Valley and are biased towards their alma maters, that is just natural.  Let's face it, other than the tournament run we have not given them a whole lot to talk about unless you count injuries and transfers. It really is a good listen despite not getting a lot of Valpo talk. I hope we force that to change when the season gets underway.

I have no reason to think it was an intentional snub. That said, I think the biggest interest Valpo fans would have in listening to a lengthy conference podcast that featured team-by-team projections (including thoughts from a guest analyst who does this for a living) is "what do they think about us?"  I merely pointed out that if that's what your interest is, don't bother because you're going to be very disappointed.

My biggest worry is still our interior defense. Kithier couldn't defend well in the BIG 10 and Hedstrom was never healthy enough to be handed the opportunity. If together they can hold Valley centers and penetrators nearly in check then our upside is enormous. If they and Krikke struggle with inside defense then we will win when our 3's drop and usually lose when they don't. Fortunately our 3 point % might jump 3 or 4 points but I dislike relying on it to win games.

Exactly who did we have playing interior defense last year?? Ben did a decent job, the problem was that there literally was no one else. Mileek, Jacob... neither one saw more than 13 minutes a game, Jacob played defense like a freshman and Mileek never played smart defense. Connor, Donovan... I was surprised at how intense Connor played defensively, but physically I have to think the new guys will be better and Donovan was a good maybe great perimeter defender who loved to block shots but did not really play interior defense. Goodnews, Nick... Goodnews was pretty hard-nosed but didn't see the court enough and wasn't going to consistently battle the bigs inside, Not much to say about the Nick situation other than I am sorry it ended that way. Emil, injured all but two games, let's hope he stays healthy and can contribute. He played some promising minutes his frosh season.

I agree that the big "IF" is can Hedstrom stay healthy and give us 22 minutes or more a game. Who would I rather have going against Gaige Prim... Krikke, Hedstrom and Kithier or Krikke and the rest of last years team?? I will take Krikke and the B1G guys (the MVC can be physicall, but the B1G is brutal) seven days a week and twice on Sundays.

This brings us full circle to sum up our totally off the radar Valley status. Everybody sees the obvious improvements that sit right under their noses and are projecting great things for their traditional core of MVC teams. Meanwhile it is easier for Valley fans to dismiss us than to research us. I like this position  and if we don't put it all together until conference play it will have some advantages.

Absolutely, but the level of our inside improvement should determine the cap on our total improvement. Our perimeter play should be excellent but will compete against other excellent Valley perimeters. What goes on under and around the basket will likely determine seeding in St. Louis.

For any team I follow and someone generally discussing the league, not much time is given to a team who finishes near the bottom regularly. I think it's tough for us as fans because we are used to being on the top. He/she said a more detailed episode is coming up to discuss us, but if they are catering this to MVC fans I'm sure the time is going to be spent on teams at the top. And if my team was on or near the top and a podcast spent time talking about teams on the bottom,  I'd turn it off. Again, why this season is so important because talent wise it's our best and the longer we are at the bottom that is more engrained in others perception of us.

The MVC is fun to be in. I feel the guy up at UWM tried to get some league wide Fandom going but too many teams there just didn't care.
