If the university goes down the whole city is in trouble. In the long run I think VU rebounds, going to be rough for a little while though.

Cutbacks are happening everywhere, not just at Valpo, not just in academia, everywhere. My company is going through a restructure and a voluntary separation program.

Yes, they aren't practical.  We only need so many actors and artists.  But history would concern me.

There was a very large response of "yes" in a recent survey to the question, "Did the United States invent slavery?"     I guessMesopotania, Egypt and countless examples onward before the colonial era don't count?

The ignorance is astounding. I learned a lot about the Mexican-American War, Vietnam, Watergate, and other recent influential thiings that weren't taught in high school. But, to be snarky as always, most of the modern faculty probably don't teach the facts as much as how people l"feel" about a one-sided presentation of the topic.

I guess the question is, do we need a history department at the college level?  I agree the ignorance of the general population is astounding, but if it isn't being taught at the high school level, where it is required, then waiting to get it in college won't work.  I was a Finance major and had to take electives but I didn't study history as part of those choices.

Everyone has their "sacred cows".  These are really difficult times for all, as you pointed out.

Even then, if you looked at more modern slavery, the US was just a consumer of the slave trade, not the inventor.  That would go to the European countries, more so than the US.

This is all very sobering.   ???

According to the Valpo CFO's comments in the Torch student newspaper in February, Valpo's yearly cost to operate exceeds by $30+ million its yearly income from residential tuition, meals, and dormitories.  Income from the endowment yields what?.....$10-15 million?   Where does the rest come from? ?

I don't mean to bring you down further, but the annual income generated by the endowment is likely included in that calculation of the annual deficit.

Here's a good article from the Torch on the Social Work program which is under review for discontinuance.

Why the university would cut a program that pays for itself it beyond me. It contributes $250K to the university per year!
I believe that we will win.

Curious where you got that number.

Vu84v2,

Holy Cow.  You are right.

I looked back at that Feb. 20, 2020 Torch article and it said that 2019 expenses were $126 million and the revenue from tuition, room, and board was $81 million.  That's $45 million  year to be met by other sources including the endowment payout.    :o
