Tough Valpo High School football schedule

I noticed that the first 2 teams that Valpo High played on their football schedule are playing for the state championship the Friday after Thanksgiving, Carmel and Penn. Now that was a tough schedule that the Valpo athletic department put together for Coach Hoffman's last year coaching at VHS.

Carmel won 21-17 over Center Grove after being down 17-0 at halftime.

Are you sure that Valpo High put that schedule together, or was it the Duneland Conference principals, who act as the advisory board for the conference?

Whoever made the schedule it was a tough schedule. Can you think of any team that played both teams in the championship game during their regular season schedule. It doesn't happen often and that was the point of this thread.

Carmel is a perennial powerhouse and they should be.  They have double the talent pool that Valpo has.

There has been talk of breaking off the top schools in enrollment into another class (6A). But Valpo HS would be included in the 6A class.

I saw this in a story written by Mark Lazerus on teams in football that dominate IHSAA state championships which are almost all Catholic schools in 1A through 4A.

The IFCA (Indiana Football Coaches Association) also pitched a sixth class for the 16 biggest schools in football and partially seeding the sectionals. But Cox's primary concern is leveling the current playing field as much as possible.

That would actually leave Valpo HS just outside of class 6A in class 5A.

The 16 schools in 6A would be
Carmel, Warren Central, North Central (Indianapolis), Penn, Hamilton Southeastern, Lawrence North, Ben Davis, Lake Central, Portage, Lawrence Central, Merrillville, Center Grove, Jefferson (Lafayette), Northrop (Fort Wayne), Crown Point and Noblesville.

So Lake Central, Portage, Merrillville and Crown Point would have to travel further distances outside the region while Valpo could stay in a much easier to win 5A not having to play Penn, Merrillville, Crown Point, etc.
