Yeah, very interesting to see us start out so strong, with so many key players from last year gone.  We seem to be leveraging the dribble drive much more this season, versus just living at the 3-pt line all game.  We are still shooting a lot of 3s, but I see a lot more lane penetration to get to that point.  I hope that keeps up!

Apparently Mary Evans knows how to basically take a bunch of new/inexperienced players and get them to play together from the get go.  Coaches can do that?  ???

Tough loss at home against UAB.  We were up 7 going into the 4th, but blew the lead to go into OT.  UAB came out hot, we stormed back, but UAB scored with 3 seconds left to win in OT.  Ali Saunders sets a FR record with 32 points.

Watched the last quarter of the game, and missed free throws were the difference. Leah Earnest is one of the most gritty physical players I have ever seen in the women's game. Last night she had 13 pts and 13 rbs. Unfortunately she is only shooting a little above 50% from the free throw line and missed 3 crucial FT during crunch time down the stretch in regulation time. Please work on her shooting form, the flying elbow will never allow her to shoot FTs consistently.

Speaking of free throws, one could say a technical free throw given to UAB before the game began cost Valpo the game, since the tie to go to overtime would not have happened, and VU would have won by one point without spotting UAB the pre-game point. From what Paul states on Twitter, the technical was issued due to a rule about a faulty shot clock that has been in effect for years, maybe more than a decade, but the NCAA is penalizing beginning this season. So, in effect, a facilities problem may have cost Valpo the win!

Did you get to watch Jeanette Gray?

What a start for Freshman Ali Saunders not only scoring 32 points last game but is currently averaging 16 points in 19 minutes a game!!

Jeanette looked like a linebacker with a jumper. She played on great teams, and made the rest of the girls on those teams better. Those were the days of VU Women's Basketball.

Tonight's game against Bowling Green was over minutes into the game. Bowling Green is good but...

We had zero offensive rebounds for the entire game. Has that ever happened?

What has happened to this team??? Started out 2-0 and now they are 2-8. I know they lost a lot from last year but the last few games haven't been pretty

To be honest the 2 wins were more of a surprise that the 8 losses.  This team is looking at a long season of losing. If they get to 10 wins kudos to them.

Again a coach who either can't recruit or doesn't understand what it will take to win in the Valley.  This five out thing just won't cut it.  We have good shooters but making threes without being able to rebound because we are too short won't do it.  Against Belmont we made 11 3's!!, but lost the rebound battle by 9 and lost the game by 14.

Good chance for a win tonight vs Evansville...

valpotx

Not a good sign when we lose to Evansville in Women's Basketball.  The same can be said if we end up losing to Indiana State, as those two programs are typically the doormats of the MVC.

We just don't have the players. Dunson is having a difficult season in every stat department but is one of our most physical players so is getting a fair number of minutes. Our 2 transfers Sims and Tecca contribute very little. Both Pitts and Saunders (who I think will be a star player if she stays) have stepped up but have some turnover tendencies. Earnest and Brown are solid but not stars who can carry the team to a respectable Valley finish on their own.  The various players that have redshirted and are having roles this year are also just that- role players.

Back in November, vu72 posted that Mary Evans knows how to blend together new, transfer personnel.  What are your thoughts now?

It's hard to blend this team to win games, when we have ZERO height or physicality inside to contend with other team's frontcourt defense on the boards. We don't have the true shooters and floor general that we had in recent years. Graduation and injuries make this year a rebuild. Hopefully, Evans is out recruiting the height, and not focused on 4 guards who can shoot and dribble, but can't get inside to battle for boards.

5th year here....rebuild?

She was winning games in the 4 years prior to this year. She had some success during those years. This year, with the transfer portal running rampant, and not recruiting any height, you take the bad year, and hope for the 6th year bringing some better recruits and talent inside. Keith Freeman had how many bad years before he was finally let go? His successor was just a bad hire altogether. This is the first year Evans had a really bad situation. Not every coach is going to be the most successful when the environment of college athletics is more hostile than US Congress.

We must be watching different teams or have a contrasting measure of "success." Her record at VU is a less than mediocre 50-77 (39%) and dropping. Dorow had a 30% winning record but Freeman's teams finished in the top half of the conference 13 out of 18 seasons, winning conference regular season or tournament championships four times. The team has finished in the bottom half of the conference standings every year with Evans. Her best year the team placed 6th in the conference. To "hope for the 6th year bringing some better recruits" is exactly the wishful thinking that got VU where it is with Lottich.

Evans record is similar to the last years of the Freemen era that led to his dismissal. She has one winning season. That team was led by Dorow recruits.

Since we bring it up with the Men's Basketball team, look at how the transfers are performing elsewhere, at the moment.  I don't know what Shay's motivation was to go to Butler (academic program or truly a conference upgrade), but I had figured that she would have more success than she is currently having.  Hey, she got to be part of a spanking by a prestigious UConn!  Cara is a key starter/player at Wright State, but they suck as 1-15.  Molly is showing progress, and is also a key contributor/starter at a crappy SIU-E (3-12).  Good to see Syria getting some decent PT at the D2 level with PNW (5-11).

No shooters...no height...no hustle...no whatever?   Who recruited the players?  If we can justify being very critical of Lottich's performance, we surely can do the same for Evans.  What a year for Valpo basketball!

I think there are shooters. Brown is shooting 46.8% from the 3 and Ali Saunders is shooting 44.4%.  The problem is size. No one other than Ernest can rebound.  The "five out" thing can't cut it in a conference like the Valley with the size all around the conference.  These are all Evan players.  Bring back Keith
Freeman!  The last coach to take Valpo to the NCAAs.
