Ryan Broekhoff grabbing an offensive rebound following his teammates two missed free throws with under 20 seconds left in a close game was the most Ryan Broekhoff thing ever.

The US national team losing in an international tournament has got to be the most US national team thing ever.

Well, Australia did its part, winning by 88, but didn't have to worry about advanced math, as we spin out again, losing to Canada 94-85 (there I saved you 2 hours of your life).

[pause to insert "CANADA!?!?! whiskey tango FOXtrot!!"]

So, there's the good news, Rowdy & co. advance.  Bad news is Lithuania is next, and they are a proverbial buzzsaw.

Actually, Australia was good no matter what.  If all 3 teams had tied at 4-1 (with a USA win over Canada), FIBA's second tiebreaker in pool play is point differential in games among tied teams.  So since Australia had lost to Canada by 9 and beat USA by 9, they had a 0 point differential, and unless USA had beaten Canada by exactly 9, would have been ahead of one of the two squads.

In an Australian game-high 32 minutes (maybe an Australia tournament high? the minutes had often been rather equally divided).

I don't see much mention of Ryan in the press with Bairstow, probably legitimately, getting more of the press.  About all I see is
Quote
Bairstow kept battling the American "bigs" with Ryan Broekhoff (10 points, 12 rebounds) and Mitch Young (12 points) also making huge contributions.

But, it sounds like a fairly solid game from Ryan, if one without too many baskets (maybe he's decided, or been told, that his role isn't primarily offensive?).

Lithuania awaits on Sunday, I think at 11:30 AM central time?

Your posting earlier would have saved me a spreadsheet :)

Two things from this article may explain why the United States is struggling in the tournament:

"I really like the style of play that we're playing," he (MSU's Payne)  said. "There's no set offense and just letting us play within some type of set. It's more freedom and I like it."

"The biggest challenge for me (Payne) is staying out of foul trouble and adjusting to the style of play because it's less physical than the states," he said.

Comment #1 speaks to lack of discipline: comment #2 to lack of preparation.  These are the trademarks of far too many international performances by USA teams.

Sounds like Coaching, but did the US get to play together for a few games like OZ did when they went 6-0 in an earlier tournament?

Just looked at the box score for the UAE / Aussie game... #10 [aka #45] did not participate for the downunder guys...

well come on, then they would have won 200 to negative 7.

a3uge - you didn't tell the entire story on that rebound.  Ryan outhustled and outfought a first team All-American for that rebound after the missed free throw.

Looking at the box score, it looks like the Australia coach rested all of the guys who played a lot of hard minutes against the US.  Bairstow and Young barely played in the UAE game.  I don't actually know that Ryan is OK, but Broekhoff looked fine at the end of the US game.  Bairstow was very impressive against the US (going up mainly against Jefferson and McDermott - though Paine was a complete disaster in that game).  Will be fun to see him in the coming season against both Valpo and Kansas.

Do you know something about a game with MSU?

I was referring to Bairstow.  He plays for New Mexico.

Not sure if these guys had a lot of time to practice together leading up to this tournament, but the team is coached by Davidson's Bob McKillip and Michigan's John Beilein. If they are just running "sets" is McKillip figuring they should be playing a "pro" style offense?

The only player on the US that looks like he knows what he's doing is Dougie McBuckets. Luke Hancock looked good on offense, but a trainwreck on defense. Guard play on the US was lacking. Payne was completely ineffective.

Brady Heslip (the Canadian little white PG on Baylor) looked good. Guy can shoot and plays withh confidence. Travon Graham (VCU) looked out of place outside of the typical swarm Shaka Smart offense.

Ryan looked great against USA...  He made the two threes to put the game in reach and then his rebounding at the end.   way to go Ryan - great upset.

LaPorteAveApostle

I agree!

Haven't rooted against the USA this hard since the San Patricios.

Thought you'd all like to know that the Aussie boys beat Lithuania in their quarter final by 5 to advance to the semis.   Rowdy top scored with 14 points and 4 rebounds.   Was a tough game with the Aussies clawing their way back after being behind at the end of each quarter.   So proud of Ryan and the team, Go the UNIROOS!!

Great game by Ryan against a really tough team! Rowdy hit key back to back 3-pointers in the 4th quarter to give the Aussies the lead. Final: 60-55

Here's Ryan's stat line:

Only 1 other Australia player scored in double figures (12).  Ryan also led the team in minutes played and was 3-6 from 3.  Well done!

The tournament is down to a "final four" - Russia (6-0) vs. Canada (6-0), Serbia (6-0) vs. Australia (5-1).  Winners play for the gold medal; losers play for the bronze.

Are any of the balance of the games on ESPNU??

Again, that's just half the story.  After being buried at the start (down 16-3!) they fought back to make a game of it and AGAIN, back-to-back Rowdy 4th quarter 3s took the lead from the other team and gave Australia a lead they would not relinquish.

Trés impressivo.

Another great game for Ryan and the Austrailian team....

Woohoo the Aussies beat Serbia after being down by as much as 15 to make it to the gold medal game.   Wasn't one of Ryan's better games but we won and he gets another chance.   Serbia were dirty so it was fantastic to beat them and they didn't like it.   We play the winner out of Canada and Russia so the worst we can do is silver and the highest we have ever finished in the past was 7th so a terrific effort by the team.   GO AUSSIE UNIROOS!!
