Someone's got it out for Interim AD Hosmer and/or her partner. That's a scary feeling, beyond the initial awfulness of reading the accusations.

My initial take on the series of letters was that it was someone with an axe to grind and that the situation should be reported to the police for that reason absent any truth to the allegations being made whether those allegations are in violation of anything other than having a bit of class. Read like a person with a mission. Missions in this case could be dangerous.

I am curious as to the motives behind these letters as well, but ultimately it is out of our hands now. We must trust VPD and the FBI if they are to be involved seeing as this is an act of cyber crime

The accusations are defamatory and clearly form the strong basis of a civil lawsuit against those who participated in creating the hoax. However, this requires the ability to identify the responsible parties. I have no idea how easy or difficult it is to do this.

I'm guessing that any number of criminal laws were broken as well, though getting a prosecutor's office to look into this may be difficult. So much cybercrime goes unpunished.

I'm no lawyer, but this seems to be a defamation suit. Nothing was published so libel is out of the question. Yes, cybercrime largely goes unpunished, but the brand of cybercrime that goes unpunished is in the realm of theft and hacking. Hackers are typically smart in handling their information and are careful not to put much out there on the internet. Cases such as defamation are different. Typically the people who put out info such as this are not as careful as the average hacker. If you decide to defame someone in this manner and do not have a background in security, more often then not.

You. will. be. found.

Libel (a form of defamation) is possible. Publication need not be in print. The challenge is finding the responsible people.

If, sadly, it turns out to be anyone connected with the University, then their days as an employee or student are ticking down.

I doubt she would have done another AD Insights if there was anything to this story.  She is one very impressive woman.

Hosmer solidifies my belief that athletics will do just fine in the coming years. Coming out to do an interview while in the face of some controversy is indeed a very impressive feat to overcome. This AD insights has me very excited to see what the attendance numbers are going to be this year.

Integrating campus rec into athletics should allow for a lot closer of a relationship between the students and the university. I hope to see the valparaiZONE a lot more full this coming season and some fun nights and events come to the athletics world as a result of this integration. There seems to be no shortage of themed matches for all sports this fall.

The embrace of technology on in the realm of tickets is also a welcome change. Valpo was always behind on such ventures and desperately needed a boost, Heck Valpo High School just launched a mobile app for all of their athletic needs (Viking Connect). I hope to see a mobile app come to VU in the coming years as well. A D1 school should not be outshined by a local high school in both facilities and technology. The coaches can only do so much to recruit before the elephants in the room need to be addressed. I do hope to see the ARC addressed this spring if all goes according to plan. Barring any unfortunate circumstances, I also hope to see the word interim dropped from her title.

Could there be clarifications about what makes Hosmer a "very impressive woman" and why there should be a decision that "the word interim dropped from her title"? The news presented in the video was almost all "clean up in aisle 9" type announcements: Two new coaches were hired to clean up the mess in sports where the previous coaches seemingly were involved in scandals (though apparently not a scandal, Hosmer herself was elevated to fill AD Small's abruptly vacated position); the ticket system has been brought into the 21st century after lagging behind other universities and even high schools, which only reminds everyone about how outdated the rest of the ARC experience continues to be; and campus recreation was brought under the umbrella of the Athletics Department as part of the cost-cutting "operation sustainability" that was implemented and resulted in the termination of 14 personnel.

Don't get me wrong; I have nothing against Hosmer, and she might be great, though I don't think this video is convincing in itself. But I would like to believe we've learned our lessons in the past about automatically elevating folks in Athletics, something others on this board also have opposed. I would be fine if Hosmer were the best candidate in an open process, something I think should already have taken place, but simply dropping the "interim" title without a wide hiring search seems to follow an unwise precedent.

I am not suggesting a search not take place. Hence why I said that I hope interim dropped from her title and not demand interim immediately be dropped from her title. A search must take place, and is most likely actively taking place. I did not mention the coaching hires as they are how you said. An open process is always needed for a high level position such as Director of Athletics. Hosmer has proven to be a strong candidate. In fact it is disheartening to see that your mindset was immediately pointing towards the negative. Admin stated that an open process is would be taking place after Small's resignation

As for Recreation. A lot of institutions have these departments conjoined. These schools have a department of Athletics and Recreation. Housing these departments together does cut costs, but it also leads to better communication of the gameday experience for the fans that matter the most, the students. Of course alumni, and the supporter matter, don't twist my words, but the college athletic environment should hold the students at the forefront. I foresee more themed events, more student involvement, and most importantly, more butts in the west end of the ARC.

As for the tech. This move with mobile ticketing is welcome. Not negatory at all. It proves that the school is willing to embrace technology.

We have nothing but hope concerning her hires but the previous problems fall to Small and Mark. Remember the bowling coach vanishing mid-season or the more recent softball fiasco. women's basketball--Mark. Baseball--Mark. Nothing against Mark, he is a fine man but made and maintains some pretty bad decisions. Thinking

She has shown decisiveness as well as finally dragging Valpo into more progressive current thinking.  At the very least she should be giving a full chance though I'm thinking Padilla will choose someone from a big conference because Charles Small worked out so well.

@rezynezy Moving Campus Rec is not a cost savings measure... how would it be without the elimination of any of the staff in either Campus Rec or Athletics. It's just an illusion to make it look like they saved money... Campus Rec was in Athletics three years ago.

@notvu Pal claimed that cost cutting and reducing staff was the reason for the change. Kindly direct this sentiment towards his post as it was a direct reply to his feelings about the merger. All I will say is this. Most Campus Rec departments are run out of the athletic department. Even if the department is a division of another department such as student life

So far Hosmer’s actions have more cosmetic which is great, but at the end these programs need to succeed, which overall are currently unacceptable and the weakest in the MVC.

I was merely reporting what the Provost and the Senior Vice President for Finance announced. The shift of Campus Recreation from Student Life to Athletics was among other "operation sustainability" moves made together this summer, including the closing of the Brauer Museum of Art: "All these steps refine how Valpo operates, reduce costs, and invest in new approaches." They stated: "Unfortunately, with this reorganization, we are eliminating a total of 14 positions." Along with Campus Recreation, other auxiliary services—the Mail Center, Bookstore, Dining Services/Catering, and Health Center—were also taken away from Student Life, which itself was removed from the Provost's Office and placed under the supervision of the Office of Finance.

The subject line of this thread needs to be changed to "AD Hosmer"

removing the "Interim"
