We have pretty much all reached the same conclusions on the transfer portal and NIL. Personally I am very close to cutting all ties with college basketball at every level. I have total disinterest in wasting my time and money following coaches and players whose sole loyalty is toward maximizing their mutual short term profitabilities.

Very little time is left for the NCAA to attempt some kind of mid course correction. Millions could soon abandon ship if nothing is done.

I watched FAR less college basketball than usual this year, and not just cause Valpo was bad. We have been bad for 4+ years now and each year I have become less interested in the sport as a whole. I know that even if we eventually do have the success we crave, all reminiscent scent of that success will be immediately decimated and we will be left starting from scratch yet again. And as ISU showed, that "success" might not even culminate in a chance to play in the tournament.

Without intervention, college basketball is on a fast track to being separated into Division 1-A and Division 1 FCS like football, with mid majors falling into the latter. The power 6s that can shell out big money will be in the A division and continue to use the new FCS style division as a farm team. We will have separate tournaments.

Even in the current state of things, the lack of storylines that carry over year to year because everybody scatters across the country makes the sport really hard to follow. No real personalities, hated teams, or darlings of the sport. When there is one, it emerges late season and then a few weeks later is dissipated due to transfers.

@mj08 Eventually this is probably going to be the case. YOu have to give the smaller school an incentive also commenting on David81. I would personally not take ISU as the example for NIL. They lost their coach and had a year where they over performed. That is just asking for high roster turnover. If Shertz was still at ISU. I would say that the starting 5 would still be there. Enough is true seeing the no contact order from Avilla. There are still kids who are loyal to a coach.

Like I said earlier, when these kids "chasing the bag" go broke in a few years. People will start to realize that maybe they should be focusing on their skills as an athlete rather than the money made short term. A couple million is nice, but as a 20 something year old. It is not sustainable to live off of in the long term. There is still only a fraction of athletes who actually go pro. Ultimately decisions are still only being made with Football in mind. When basketball is just as popular as football. I think eventually the Mid Major schools will draft a lawsuit of their own. Particularly the A-10 and the MVC seeing as these 2 conferences are the best mid majors. There needs to be some buyout or contract that requires the larger schools to compensate the schools players are poached from. I'd even say that they should tally the total in scholarship money lost on the athlete and multiply that sum by a premium tax for years left of eligibility.

Let players choose if they want to go to class and earn a degree. The is the minor leagues. How long is the average pro career anyway. I would think 60% or higher end up broke, three years after their playing career is over.

Wild West right now with no set rules. College baseball....stay 1 year or 3 years. Full stop Seems like that works well

First Valpo 'transfer' of Luke Carroll in the portal.  For him, it is a wise decision as a walk-on, if he truly wants playing time at a lower level

Brayden O'Connor stats look solid (but not eye popping) in all categories. I think he MIGHT be a positive fit.

But would he significantly upgrade our top 8 rotation on the roster?

Brayden O’Connor would be a good add. Averaged basically double figures on good 3pt%. Competing with some solid programs for him. His advanced analytics show him as a solid defender on top of being able to shoot. Would fill holes.

My current thinking is that either the Carroll “transfer” is the beginning of a sequence of transfers for guys like Edwards maybe Weatherspoon that will open up a couple more spots. That, or Powell is very high on the “addition” of Scroggins and Manyang down low and think that they will shore up our rebounding/interior defense problem.

Either way, if we are able to land Brayden or a comparable guard, I will be generally happy about the off-season even before any other big move that could occur from an additional transfer. Powell clearly doesn’t want his best players coming from the portal, so he is targeting complimentary pieces via transfer. As long as he is able to keep bringing in Schwieger level talent from high school, that is fine with me. McNair looks to be on that level, Scroggins and Manyang are both Uber-talented.

I tend to believe that we will see at least 1 scholarship player transfer out, as we have already landed a guard, have another guard coming for a visit, and have reached out to at least 3 centers in the portal. I doubt we were reaching out to big men just for fun, so the fact we only have 1 scholarship left and our having a guard visit tells me they expect another scholarship to open up.

@vok22 Powell does seem to be courting good HS talent. He is even in on some juniors for 2 years from now. Case in point being the hometown kid Jack Smiley. Ultimately it is a good strategy to rely on your home grown talent rather than play portal roulette

Just about 20 minutes ago Lual Manyang went into portal.  Now we will probably see a new big man
