Well, it’s not as bad as what’s happening at Rice. What a mess.

What is it with VU and promising quarterbacks? Jimmy Seewald had that strong season, and it was downhill from there. It took forever for Ben Nimz to get off the bench, and it was clear that he should've been starting for a while. And now Mikey Appel, who looked so good a couple of years ago.

Seewald had a career ending injury. He was actually good. Appel has been average at best.

Yeah. The other guys had a good half or game. Seewald was pretty solid.

This is pretty much from memory and a quick look at the FB record book, but here is some background.

Since 2011, [Yes, the Dale Carlson 3-40 era] there are only two QBs who are mentioned among the top 10 career-wise:  Eric Hoffman (2011-2013) who is Valpo’s all-time passing leader, and Seewald who is way down the list but his name is definitely there. Through Cecchini to Fox there have been numerous potentially good QBs but none have risen above injury filled seasons to reach their potential. As memory serves, many of those injuries were to the shoulder. None came back equal to or stronger after surgery. BTW, Hoffman had the benefit of throwing to Tanner Kuramata, an all-time VU top 10 and Jimmy threw to Griffin Norberg, another career great receiver.

Say what you will about Carlson, he coached a prolific passing game. Of course on the negative side of the ledger, he believed that the best run game was the short pass and the best defense was to just put up more points than the other guy. That produced some great passing stats and a whopping 3 wins in 4 years.

Cecchini also was an offense-oriented HFBC, but aside from Ben Lehman’s lone very good first season (he was a Carlson carry-over) and Seebert’s injury shortened career, Dave saw a lot of QB injuries curtail promising seasons. Defense was better than under Carlson, but still not the top or even equal priority.

Enter Fox.  He came on board with a very good defensive rep. Ergo,  our best overall seasons have been the result of keeping close scoring margins.  His defenses have been consistently the best we've seen since 2011.  He’s transferred in some very good RBs to help move the ball on the ground and his best QB recruit up to this season has been Mikey Appel — until injury and the revolving OC door changed the trajectory.

Bud...Hoffman was prolific and threw to everyone. Tanner's best season was his senior year which was after Hoffman was gone. Tanner's Jr. year was good but not spectacular and his soph year he was one of about 10 guys who caught 20 passes or more. As you mention...Carlson could spread it around with the best of them but couldn't stop anyone. Seewald is easily the best Valpo has had since.

Hoffman did throw to everyone including the opposing team. There is no question Seewald was the best Valpo QB since 2011.

people may be down on Fox after last weekend, but he is Saban compared to Carlson and the Joel Osteen inspirational quotes. Carlson was a pompous train wreck.

Do you realize how long Carlson has been gone? I really do think it's time to stop trashing Carlson.

Carlson left (was fired) Valpo before the final game in 2013. Almost 11 years ago. I'm sure there are Valpo posters on here who don't remember him at all. Yes, he was awful but what is the point of dwelling on it?

I was in Milwaukee for the weekend following a death in the family. I listened to the game as I drove up, but I wasn't in a position to be able to take an interview after the game. I meet with Landon every Wednesday and I'll certainly be asking about the QB.

Definitely agree, 24.  Going just by the season and career stats alone, Hoffman clearly was the best in yards passing — even his “bad” games produced significant yards (usually trying to come back from big deficits due to a very porous D). He had one more year of eligibility when Cecchini took over, but he chose to graduate and leave. I, personally, regret that he didn’t stay just so I could have seen him perform in Cecchini’s offense on a team with a better D.  Ben Lehman moved into the QB1 slot that season and threw for 2,200+ yards.  Had Hoffman stuck around and threw for those same yards he’d have 9,400 career yards. No QB since (or before for that matter) would come close.

But had Jimmy had a healthy 4 seasons, he could have come close to or even surpassed Hoffman’s three season total of over 7,200 yards — Jimmy had over 4,000 career yards while only seeing 3 and 4 games in his last two seasons respectively (and, unfortunately, he was never quite right after the shoulder injury).   Wish we could recruit another Seewald but that hasn’t seemed to be in the cards right now.

If Caron was truly hobbled, then I take back and apologize to Coach Fox for any concerns I stated.

From 16 - "Tyler was not in the above mix. He’s a great kid by All account. Parents are mad, media is mad"

After listening to the video, I heard a lot of generalizations, and something is not consistent in the response.

I'm in agreement. If he was injured, he would have said he had an injury even if he didn't mention where the injury was on the body. "Soreness" just sounds like complete bs and he's protecting a bad decision.

This, in particular, since we have comments indicating that this may be bs.
