@valpopal Who else would they choose to get into the tournament that arent the teams that meet the old requirements.

"Additionally, the 12 teams automatically selected will be guaranteed the opportunity to host a game in the first round of the NIT."

They are choosing 2 teams from each of the top 6 conferences "regardless of win-loss record." These 12 teams will also be guaranteed to host a first-round game.

@valpopal so 2 teams from Power, and 10 teams with auto bids as well, my point was while the requirements don't exist, I fail to see what other schools you would choose besides the teams who met the old requirements. I apologize if I was not clear enough

It is not "2 teams from Power, and 10 teams with auto bids as well." It is 12 teams from Power Six conferences with auto bids "regardless of win-loss records" and hosting first round games. There are no longer auto bids for schools under the old requirements. Additionally, other teams from the six top conferences are eligible to be selected as at-large teams and can be selected as hosts." This is a direct attack on the participation by teams outside the top six conferences.

@valpopal Ok I went through the text again and the whole thing is worded VERY messily. (Duh its a corporate entity). I had to go to an outside source, which I hate doing as the direct text from the league is the best source of info. Under these regulations mid majors are essentially being shut out. Which is deplorable. No wonder this happened a year after 2 mid majors were in the championship. I apologize for misunderstanding NCAAs words.

Again, the NCAA right now has minimal authority or power, and the bureaucratic,  pompous NCAA has no one than themselves to blame. The unfairness and ineptitude of this organization is to blame for this NIL Pandora’s Box.

This I can agree with. NCAA game up their rights to college football after the lawsuit with Oklahoma in the 80s, and college football makes all the decisions for the NCAA.

This painful shakeout is just the beginning, a three-way train wreck between (1) the transfer portal and immediate eligibility; (2) NIL; and (3) a growing entitlement mentality among some young folks who are bizarrely unable to distinguish between the revenue-generating power of, say, Duke basketball vs. heavily subsidized mid-major teams, when it comes to considering players "employees" because they play DI sports and thus should be eligible to unionize and collectively bargain.

On the latter point, I am a strong supporter of organized labor generally, and a one-time union shop steward myself. I'm delighted when underpaid home care assistants and delivery people decide to organize and demand higher wages. But especially where collegiate student-athletes are already receiving full-ride scholarships to cover tuition, room, and board and thus will avoid graduating with student loan debt -- the value of those packages should be considered a form of work-study award, in return for their contributions to their respective teams. Whether they merit additional compensation should depend on the approximate revenue-generating value of their own performance and whether or not their team generates revenues above the amount of what's required to sustain their program without university subsidies. I can't wait until they try gain some consensus within the bargaining units on questions like this.

Oh, and I've posted this before but believe it bears repeating: If you think Charlie Baker gives a hoot about how all of this affects the vast majority of collegiate teams and sports that do not generate a lot of revenue and require university subsidies to continue, then think again. The little guy (and that includes Valpo and schools like it) doesn't have much presence on Charlie Baker's radar screen. He's just not that kind of person.

Charlie Baker and the NCAA suck. But this quote by the great Jerry Tarkanian says it all:

"The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky theyre going to give Cleveland State another year of probation."

Valparaiso certainly has a long way to go in terms of fundraising in all aspects to really compete in the Missouri Valley. NIL is part of it, but let's face it, we all know about the facility disparity with other programs. Still, I believe the program can be more competitive than it is right now. This is rock bottom. Valparaiso will get better.

@david81, I've wondered the same thing.  How can you get into Dartmouth, and think that Dartmouth athletic programs make enough money to provide additional funding to the athletes?  It was the same for when Northwestern football players tried to form a union.  Of all the football programs to try for such a thing, it was NW?

"...conference regular-season champions that do not win their conference tournament or are not otherwise selected to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship will not receive an automatic bid to the NIT."

"...the NIT will guarantee two teams (based on the NET rankings) from each of six conferences (Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern). The top two teams in the NET rankings not qualifying for the NCAA men's basketball tournament from each conference, regardless of win-loss record, will be selected. Additionally, the 12 teams automatically selected will be guaranteed the opportunity to host a game in the first round of the NIT.

Joe Lunardi currently has 9 teams in the Big 12 receiving NCAA bids. Therefore, according to the new criteria, the 10th and 11th place teams in that conference now receive automatic bids to the NIT tournament and a right to host the first game at home. That means an 11th place team with a conference record of 7-11 will be placed above any mid-major teams not selected to the NCAA, even if the mid-major won its conference regular season and no matter the won-loss record. Further, for some reason the transfer portal opens Monday, and some teams might choose to pass on the NIT so they can get a jump start recruiting new players. Indiana and Mississippi have already stated as much. Mississippi's rejection would move Georgia or Arkansas into an NIT automatic bid despite 6-12 conference records. How screwed up is this?
