What's the estimated salary for Powell?
In the 2023 990s, Lottich was getting $338k. The 2024 docs aren’t out there yet.
I am not following the rationale for anyone thinking Valpo would *want* to go back to the Horizon?
I don't know that the University wants to go back to the Horizon. And I don't know that the Horizon wants Valpo. But the rationale for the fans (including myself) wanting to go back is very straightforward and clear.
1.) We are light years behind in NIL compared to the MVC.
2.) Our results in the MVC have been consistently terrible.
3.) MVC is a one bid league just like the Horizon.
4.) There are no donor saviors coming to save the day.
5.) Competing in a lower level conference puts us in better alignment to compete for championships and tournament bids.
6.) Lower level conference allows our non-MBB teams to be more competitive.
7.) Horizon offers geographic benefit at least equal to the MVC.
Did this clear it up for you? Or still unsure?
Seems like everyone is ASSUMING that the other leagues will have comparable NIL amounts. We don't know that for sure.
Curious, do you guys have some plan for continuing the basketball team if the uni goes under? I DO care and enjoy rooting for the sports teams from time to time, but I admit I am somewhat further from the fandom as some of you, so a lot of this conversation seems kind of like a gambling enterprise (where to put $ money to get wins that may or may not materialize, how to buy $ players that may or may not stay long term, etc). So as somebody more familiar with and invested in the academic programs, and pretty worried about the entire uni going under because of the cratering of the academics and enrollment, I am wondering how you see the sports apparatus continuing if the university is not there to continue it? Are there precedents either in the old era or under the new NIL system where basketball or football teams have gone independent and continued to participate in college sports without a college attached?
What are you smoking?
@cmack Well-stated!
I think another major variable at play here is being a private institution without a D1 revenue-producing football program. The list of schools falling in this category isn't very long. Notably, it includes places like Gonzaga, Loyola University Chicago, Drake, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, Valpo, American U, Boston U, Fairfield U, George Washington U, Iona, Marist, Monmouth, Niagara, Saint Peter's U, & Siena.
If you don't receive public funds & cannot rely on the football program, you're left with few options. Granted, consider how many of the schools listed above are top-tier mid major programs .. continually making it into the big dance ...
Oh, and then consider endowments ... for what that's worth as an indicator of possible donors ... Valpo is ~200 million ... Drake is double that ... Loyola is 1.2 billion ... Gonzaga is around 1.1 billion ... George Washington is at 1.8 billion ... Santa Clara is around 1 billion ... etc.
What about the baseball model to "fix" the inequalities in college basketball. Stay one year or required to stay 3 at the institutation. Can't fault the SEC for getting 14 teams in or the kids that transferred there for a better opportunity. Chaz Lanier was a good player on a average North Florida team and now he's on a top ten Tennessee team and one of the stars. I think they should make every player stay a minimum three years and go back to making a player sitting out a year after transferring. Of course this won't happen.
College basketball will need some type of legislation body from some powerful influencers, coach K etc. Will their be enough support/incentive to fix the issue in foreseeable future. Crazy that players can get compensated before they even set foot on campus.
I think that's a bit of a stretch to go so far as to say the university commences to exist. Should that be the case, the least of concerns would be surrounding athletic programs.
Sorry if it seems like a dumb question, but we all know the overall institutional situation is pretty dire and other chains on this e-board *are* talking about stuff like corporate sponsorships or car dealerships funding the sports/players -- which does sort of beg the question increasingly of what exactly the relationship between the teams and the university might be in the new NIL era, and whether it actually makes that much sense for them to be attached to or dependent upon each other.
@vuindiana To your point, how many of us ... back in 2015 ... would've thought the current collegiate athletics situation would be where it is at present? Not me. If only I had such forsight.
So - to your point - it shouldn't be far-fetched to consider any such options in the years ahead.
Put this in the wrong thread. Better served here.
Evansville is losing Gabriel Pozzato and Sam Haffner
to the portal. So Valpo will have some competition in a "who are we putting on the floor" fashion.

Valpo needs an ANNUAL NIL bank of $750K give or take to be consistently competitive in the MVC. Glomming onto your point, it appears the university is on the verge of another 10% decrease in fall enrollment, which is tragically becoming an annual habit. For anyone around with money, for God sakes give it to the university, unencumbered. The last thing Valpo needs right now are donations to superfluous causes like athletics, or worse yet a $5M donation for a campus Islamic mosque.
If you are a top 3 ppg guy at your school in the MVC, I see you entering the portal every year, moving forward. In addition to the two already mentioned from Evansville, I have to believe that Comer and Turnbull will be gone.

I don't know where you are getting your endowment numbers but they are way off according to NACUBO. Granted the reporting is a couple of years behind, but unless somebody gave Drake 80 M they aren't ahead of us yet.
Valpo: 326 M
Drake: 245 M
Gonzaga: 413 M
George Washington: 2.34 B
Loyola: 893 M
Santa Clara: 1.472 B
As I mentioned before, 14 of 15 All-Conference MVC players transferred or graduated, last year. Did anyone besides Cooper from the All-Freshman team stay for their sophomore year? I’m really curious what will happen this year, as well as, other Mid-major conferences. Everyone keeps thinking that we will be so better off in another conference, but in the world NIL, I don’t see how that helps us. Won’t we be in the same predicament? Our best players will move on for more NIL money than we have.
