"The NCAA needs to drop the 'student first, athlete second' charade. —J.J. Watt

Members of this forum are among the most avid longstanding fans of college sports. Yet, even here, we are seeing the steady deterioration of that devotion. Clearly this is a warning sign. I agree with others who have expressed little enthusiasm while watching any of this NCAA tournament, a spectacle that used to be my favorite sporting event each year.

Additionally, as someone who at one time assisted Valpo coaches by offering academic advising sessions to recruits visiting campus, I believe the first unfortunate casualty we have witnessed in the current damage to college sports is the noble idea of a "student-athlete," which now exists only as a myth for most. To me, this is a sad loss.

Jacob Ognacevic in the transfer portal. Didn't know he had another year, but he still has his COVID year since he redshirted one year at Lipscomb.

Mason Miller was a highly regarded recruit for Creighton, but he could never get on the floor regularly due to lots of other talent and lack of consistent play. My guess is that he will be a first or second team all-MVC player at Murray because he does have a lot of talent.

My guess is that the TV ratings for the tournament are up because it is almost all larger schools advancing beyond round of 32. We all love the mid-majors advancing (myself included), but TV ratings are less for McNeese, Saint Mary's, etc. The average or passing fan doesn't know or care about these teams.

Like many here, I hate the state of college basketball with NIL and transfers. I can't blame the players for seeking pay, but it is quickly becoming a glorified AAU system (I suspect within five years that players will be allowed to transfer and play immediately during the winter break). I would love for the mid-majors to find a way to fight back and stop this evolution, but I just don't see it.

Better said is that most love the upsets until they are playing against Goliath in the second round and getting hammered. In addition wasn't there a final four within the last 10 years which had a couple of lower seeded teams and ratings just tanked? Everyone loves the underdog until they don't. Same in Football although it occurs much less.

I'll be curious to see where Ognacevic lands, due to his prior requirement on team religious bonding.  He played himself into a good league upgrade, but the schools that meet his viewpoint at that level, are few and far between.

The portal is a mess, but when the NCAA tried to enforce the "one-time" transfer restriction, it got shot down in court. Until we get to the point where players are employees and have official contracts, it's going to continue to be a little messy.

Correct. The next thing is going to be a player suing a coach/school for an NIL promise that doesn’t get fulfilled.

Once players become employees with contracts, the NCAA will have a better chance at enacting salary cap restrictions and transfer rules that won’t violate antitrust law.

1) Two leading players at UTSA are claiming today that they did not receive the $125,000 they were promised by their coach to get them to commit.

2) As for players becoming employees:

Looks like Cooper is down to Northwestern, Wake Forest, and Clemson as of right now – with a lean toward Northwestern. Michigan dropped out because of playing time issues and Kansas no longer seems to be in the running.

As for AW, quite the laundry list of suitors!

Am I crazy to think that Cooper and All Wright help our recruiting? Both portal announcement tweets (yes only 2 tweets) combined have almost 1 MILLION views. Obviously it hurts to lose two high caliber players, but at least it’s a positive for recruits to see that they can develop and launch their career here. Might not be the best thing to claim… but hey at least it’s something lol
