The NCAA has achieved what everyone predicted, a tournament where any mid-major presence is only early window dressing but eliminated by the time the competition reached the serious level of the sweet sixteen and the greater income or national exposure that entails.

"For the first time in NCAA tournament history, the Sweet 16 will be comprised of only four conferences, the fewest ever, and it is the four biggest leagues: ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, and SEC. Some incredible matchups await, but we are lacking mid-major/Cinderella flavor, which is a bummer." —Matt Norlander, CBS Sports

"NIL is the death of mid-major Cinderella runs...." —Jay Williams, ESPN

"If this continues, it will be the death of college basketball." —Stephen A. Smith on no Cinderella teams in this year's Sweet 16

Roger went all in on trying to do what he could to keep his stars even without NIL Money. Minutes upon Minutes, Scholarship for a brother, letting certain people shoot through dry spots or bad spells and it got him not just them still leaving but also: The brother also leaving, less development time for his players on the bench, and less time or opportunities for others to work through their own slumps. I'm not saying that's why everyone is leaving but it does make me wonder. Now, you have to play the people most likely to get you wins so it feels like a damned if you do , damned if you don't situation either way. Maybe money fixes some of this. But I really don't know how you get basketball out of this death spiral other than waiting on and hoping the bubble pops sooner rather than later. Only 1 seed lower than a 6 in this year's sweet sixteen and it's power conference dominated...

It's all about the Benjamins. That is a fact regardless of what a particular individual who is leaving might say. This is not going to change anytime soon or in the future. It's here to stay.

Yes, another signal that the new transfer portal and NIL have had a negative influence. The NCAA has achieved what everyone predicted, a tournament where any mid-major presence is only early window dressing but eliminated by the time the competition reached the serious level of the sweet sixteen and the greater income or national exposure that entails. Even John Calipari, who has benefited maybe the most among coaches, said yesterday he was beginning to regret the current state of college basketball when he was reminded of the ridiculous situation that the transfer portal begins today, while all these teams are still playing.

Some would argue the consequences weren't very unintended.

new commit. My guess is in less than 365 days he’s in the transfer portal.

https://www.twotwelvesports.com/ it seems like a lot of decent players have come from this academy. Rakim is also the leading scorer for his team. Was also offered by Monmouth. Feels good to start filling up the roster again

Because the new mid-major normal is play for the current season, don't build for a future that can (and likely will) disappear in days, I can no longer get excited about freshman recruits.

Can’t we at least know his number?

While talented freshman have been evident on the roster the last two seasons in two cases, the roster needs to be built with talented upperclassmen. It's possible, if not probable, that they are out of reach for Valpo.

A big part of the appeal of college sports is the connection the students and fans have with the players who are playing for and care about OUR school.  When the players have no bond with the school, it becomes more like the National Boring Association, and it's harder for fans to care, especially when there isn't much winning.

Is it possible that there will be no more senior nights after next year because there will be no more seniors? And will it be awkward when the last senior, Joe Vick, is honored, it is noted that while he didn't score any points in his years at Valpo, he did have three rebounds and two assists?

bingo. The basketball is undoubtedly worse than the NBA product. Worse shooting, defense is bad so there are a lot of fouls and stoppages. Without that school-player connection element, CBB sucks. It’s only a matter of time before I get tired of complaining about it online and completely abandon the sport.

@vok22 Wait! Are you accusing the pros of playing defense?  Just kidding.  At least pros sign legally binding contracts that tie them to a team for more than one year, and the name on the back of a uni is memorable for more than a season.

Here's where I'm at with the landscape at hand: It is what it is. Beyond my control. Might as well enjoy the off season, watching Powell & Co. assemble a 1-year roster. From there, I'll support the guys knowing that it's temporary. Not looking at things from a year-over-year development standpoint but rather the development aspect is more like where can Powell get this group of guys from November - Arch Madness? From, there, I'll fully expect complete turnover.
