Watching Florida-Auburn. Glad neither All or Cooper tried for this level. Both wouldn’t see the court. Perhaps the money is too much to turn down but perhaps some will ultimately realize another year in the “minors” might make a lot of sense.

@vuindiana Agree with soccer & tennis.

I bring football up because there's no denying that it's the most expensive sport to fund (equipment-wise, etc.)

Do we honestly believe Schmidt is getting $30-$50k? I'd be shocked ... he's got hustle but ... idk ... I'd be shocked if he didn't hit his ceiling.

He clearly moved down a level which makes the 30-50k thing even more difficult to believe.

It is true. The fact it is difficult to believe is my point. If those kinds of players are getting that kind of money at those kinds of schools, we have no chance of retaining anyone. And it shows year after year.

I’ve heard the number is higher than this.

Players will go where the money is.

RICHMOND, Va. (January 29, 2025) – The Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Board of Directors and its member institutions have committed to opting into the pending NCAA House settlement by March 1, 2025.

Horizon League Bets on NIL Revenue-Sharing to Boost National Relevance

As the Horizon League embraces revenue-sharing, non-revenue athletes may pay the price

In a somewhat surprising move, the Horizon League has announced that all member institutions will opt-in to the preliminarily approved House v. NCAA settlement.

Many schools and conferences have begun to opt in; however, the Horizon League is the weakest to fully commit to this new landscape of college sports.

I'm honestly not surprised about the HL a lot easier to opt into rev sharing when you only have three private school mouths to feed with majority of the HL being public schools they get State funding and can do what they want

@rezynezy Only a minor correction, but one that further supports your statement:  There are only two private school mouths to feed out of the 11 teams in the HL — Detroit Mercy and Robert Morris (PA).

A few thoughts:

There needs to be more transparency re:NIL. Right now, there are no incentives to be transparent. Players don’t want to say how much they make because they want to appear more valuable. Coaches don’t want to say how much players get either 1) so they can drive better bargains with other players or 2) to hide behind NIL as an excuse when players leave their program.

Second, Valpo and other small private schools can’t compete in this arms race between the blue bloods, publicly funded schools, and well funded private institutions. We are on the path to failure. The only way we get off this path is through regulations. Which only happens if players become employees and unionize.

Well funded programs don’t want unions because that will upset the power structure. But right now Valpo has more in common with the players than with large colleges, in terms of power.

Maybe small private colleges should throw a wrench into the entire system and treat athletes as employees. That might blow the entire thing up for everyone. At this point, that’s the only card left we have to play.

Ah. List I saw said 3. Must have been out of date. From what I have seen via interviews and segments with coaches and other basketball personalities. The consensus seems to be contracts are wanted. Buyouts included. Even at the high major level. The only conference that I have seen that displays a stance against contracts with buyouts is the one out of the Southeast.

I would not be opposed to a stance by the MVC for rev share, but I would be hesitant to see just how much the damage money would be for VU.

IU has closed more than 20 departments in preparation for the settlement. As a blue blood(I still consider them one) that is very concerning.

What sports are on the chopping block at small privates like VU? What staff departments would be on the chopping block?

Lots of unanswered questions. However, I do not expect small private schools to share a lot in rev share. What I would expect is nothing beyond a surcharge at concessions. Maybe even a portion of premium seating options such as season tickets or upgraded seating going to players.

Worth mentioning that the Colonial Athletic Association rebranded to the Coastal Athletic Association a few years back, due to the negative stigma of Colonial, at the time.

Opting into rev share does not mean that they have to spend an arm and a leg on it. If the MVC did opt into rev sharing then I would hope that Valpo would offer some new ideas to get additional fan support. Doesn’t have to be anything crazy, could even be something like a parking spot, gear, concessions, etc.
