Any word on results from Day of Giving?

Day of Giving is largely nickels and dimes in the bigger picture.

Often those big "Day of Giving" announcements are contrived by big donors holding back the money to consolidate it for a big dramatic announcement when they would have given it anyway.  In fact, you can see that they needed a few days to spin it. We know that a dated digital mechanism for website giving would have known that total at 1:00 a.m. after the "Day."  Of course there could still be paper checks on the way from the vaunted USPS. But you would know with 90% accuracy on the morning after.

I would be really glad to be wrong this year or glad to be wrong about any recent year. After the inevitable "Wow" announcement, maybe someone on the ground can summarize where the "wow" gift total is going?

As we have seen in other years, the university has announced it reached its "goal," and the total amount raised was $470,000.

@valpopal The amount raised was higher than that. If the school met their goal, then all $470,000 of “bonus funds” would be donated. I’m assuming those funds were some kind of corporate sponsorship because there were numerous companies on the promotional materials. There were also other challenges, donation matches, etc. that included more than just the $470,000. For example, athletics raised at least $100,000 that was separate from the bonus funds.

Yep. I correct my typo, which was a bit unclear because it was missing the word "bonus" and should have read: "As we have seen in other years, the university has announced it reached its 'goal,' and the total bonus amount raised was $470,000."

Ahh gotcha thanks for clarifying! I just got an email from Valpo and they said over $1.2 million. Not too bad imo.

The new staff over in athletics have certainly piqued my interests in the program and its future going foreword. Yesterday I received a call from someone in the athletic department. Apparently everyone who put their information down on the list that went around the chili Bowl received the same treatment. Had a really heartfelt conversation with the person on the other end of the phone about athletics and they even opened the floor to any questions I may have about the state of athletics. I was even free to give suggestions to the person on the other end. I hope the other sectors of the university see the value in opening direct lines of communication between supporters and the  school itself.

My guess is that you spoke with Ted.  He called me, as well, and we had a good dialogue

Unfortunately that’s the society we live in now. Bad news gets way more attention. Happy to see that some things have been going well for the school this past week.

@regionrat03 look no further than the slander pieces written by the tribune. All that bad press has caused potential enrollees to either not consider the school l, or to ask around on forums such as reddit. School needs to get into the marketing game again and have some stability in the academic offices

How exactly were they "slander" pieces? Isnt it slanderous by you suggesting that?

As Inigo Montoya would say about "slander": "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

@valpopal Slander: The act of making a statement that is degratory to ones reputation. But since we are being grammatical here, Libel would fit better. Which is the same definition although specified to a public work. Seeing as the statements made by the Tribune, and continue to be put forth by the tribune degraded the reputation of the institution, that would be considered a slanderous or Libelous piece against the university.

A long time ago these were criminal offenses, since they have been lumped under the definition of "Defamation" which is the act of spreading libel or slander that is "misinformation" or not true. At least that is my undderstanding of the way that works. Not a lawyer by any means.

Q: So why did VU not file a libel suit?  A: The Trib’s coverage ‘probably’ (cuz I haven’t read the mentioned articles) stated things that were based factually. Facts, like statistics, can be manipulated, or at least placed in a context that spins in one way or another. We're seeing that all the time in today’s  world. And, of course, bad things are click bait.

We can’t undo the Law School closing. We can’t undo the decision to put three works of art up for sale. The press has every right to analyze these events and interpret what they see. In the the eyes of the Valpo faithful, that could be a “hit job” but if there were no lies or fabrications stated there are no grounds to sue (Complain? Yes.)

But we are now arguing semantics and word choices 🙄. Jeez, it is undisputed: Valpo has gotten some bad press — maybe some deserved and maybe some not so. That’s reality. Move on fer krysakes.
