@vok22 Valpo will be noted by a number of transfers as "showing interest," a category that needs only minimal contact (maybe even initiated by the players or their coaches), and those same players might list 20 other programs "showing interest" as well. This is why it is wise to mainly focus on players who actually say they have received "an offer."
I know the drawing interest game pretty well and valpopal is spot on. Any contact between a school, someone representing the school, a parent, someone who lives in the neighborhood of the school, etc. will be reported as "showing interest" and it is only an offer which provides any real information.
Regarding Jimmie Williams...Wallace St. is in the Juco Tournament which begins Sunday. They are seeded 21st and I believe that is overall. I can't say I was overwhelmed by either the highlights or the level of competition but I'll have to go with the coaching staff if he's brought in.
To sum up our 5 pages of transfer posts----- We have shown interest in every eligible transferring guard on the planet but we have only offered one a scholarship. Does that clear things up a bit?
Showing interest shows what the coaching staff wants and right now i guess we want gaurds. Hopefully we can get more guys offers than just williams
SO far I have noticed a lot more activity surrounding Portal entries and VU. Powell is getting his name out there
and I see BEN Schwieger (Loyola) is in the Portal. No apparent relation. from Wabonsie Valley HS in Aurora, IL. Was an A10 All-Freshman team... but sat on the bench much of last season... Thinking back to the days when Valpo had the three Jenkins guys, including one set of twins... ahh, those were the days.
Well, if we are only after guards then it says a lot about the health of Manyang and solid belief in Scroggins. Somehow I think there are some added plans for bigs.To sum up our 5 pages of transfer posts----- We have shown interest in every eligible transferring guard on the planet but we have only offered one a scholarship. We did "show interest" (whatever that means anymore) in Central Michigan's Markus Harding. 6'10 Center who started all 22 games he played in last year. Averaged 10 and 5 on 50+% from the field. Still, have mostly been guards we've reached out to.
When do transfers usually pick up? I know there are already something like 7 or 900 in the portal, so I am surprised we haven't heard anything about a couple of our players transferring yet. I am sure there will be a few, and I would imagine they had their end of season meetings now, but maybe not. We still have not offered anybody except that Jimmie Williams JUCO transfer.
With 3 big time MVC coaches leaving this offseason leaving Drake, SIU, and Ind. State in likely rebuilding years, I would really like to see us land some proven shooters and a complimentary scorer or big and make a push to be at the top of the valley. It seems like the Valley should be wide open this season so with Powell getting a whole offseason to recruit the transfer portal, a returning Freshman of the Year, and a returning 15ppg scorer, I will be dissapointed if we don't field a roster that is picked in the top half going into the season.
It might well be a vote of confidence for the futures of Manyang and Scroggins but Powell might also be waiting for someone to enter the portal that he believes is very likely to sign when offered. Either way I'd expect a large improvement for our inside game in 24-25.Well, if we are only after guards then it says a lot about the health of Manyang and solid belief in Scroggins. In looking at the portal so far. There simply isnt a lot of activity on the center front. However, this entire season we were in desperate need of consistent shooting and we lacked a true "6th man". The 3 point game was also consistently weak throughout the year. Our wins this season largely came from our 3 point game waking up and allowing for comebacks.
Free throws is an easy fix considering Virgil Sweet wrote the book on free throw shooting. Just ask for the book from VHS.
The team doesn't necessarily need a true center but they do need some size and some toughness to go along with that size. This team was soft last year and that needs to change which Powell has virtually come out and said.
It is strange that so far Valpo has been mentioned with guards which might lead to one thinking that some of those guards on the roster may not be asked back. A guy like Edwards is listed as a guard but defensively is asked to play against, sometimes, the opponents 4 which he was a long way from being able to handle. If Edwards is looked upon as a guard, I can see the guy they offered being his replacement as a big guard.
It would seem that Roger has had ample time to hold 1-on-1 discussions with this year’s players, yet no one has entered the portal to my knowledge. With 3 scholarship players leaving and 1 new freshman coming in, that would leave 2 vacancies. I’m good with that. Adding multiple players out of the portal is an annual crapshoot that doesn’t add much value and can’t be sustained from 1 year to the next. Building from the bottom up and adding where necessary is the only way to a stable program.

If, based on the above, Powell brings in a guard...as offered...and some other player even if it is the aforementioned big, we need to start wondering about Coach Powell. This can't be the plan.
